Chocolate brown eyes widen slightly in surprise as it becomes apparent exactly where the two are standing. Cenric tries his damn best to keep his expression cool and calm, but his body inevitably betrays him with flushed cheeks; even the tips of his ears turning pink in his realization. 

For a good minute he stands there, nodding along dumbly in the places he deems appropriate as Megumi speaks. It’s not that he wasn’t listening, it’s just that he found it hard to focus on her words as he internally juggles with the idea of... well, going along with tradition, he supposes. 

Well. It would be... mostly harmless, he figured. And if she hated it, there was always the nearest window to escape out of. 

Plucking up his courage, Cenric glanced up at the sprig of mistletoe one last time before reaching out to cup the woman’s cheek in his hand. Pressing a kiss to the other, he soon scurried away in his own embarrassment. 

Real smooth.

               “You know, I could say the same thing to you.” 

He truly hadn’t expected anything. The holidays, as much as he enjoyed them, were usually a modest affair. Typically spent alone after moving to an entirely new country, so the thoughtful tokens from Megumi were enough to significantly lift his spirits. She could have given him anything and he likely would have treasured it all the same. 

Of course, that didn’t stop his own worries about the gifts he gave in return. The baked goods were sure to go down a ( literal ) treat, but the necklace... was it too much? Cenric watched with a nervous smile as she surveyed the contents of the box, mouth opened; ready to come up with a smart comment or a quick excuse, but the sudden hug he was caught up in kept him silent. Cheeks flushed, that was probably the biggest surprise so far, arms opening to return the gentle squeeze with a quiet chuckle. 

               “O-Oh? Sure...” 

Setting his own gifts down, Cenric plucked the necklace from the smaller box, holding the opened chain in both hands.

                “Here... turn around.”

Megumi brightens under his smile and reaction, feeling really pleased with herself when it became apparent that he had liked them. Not that she’d ever show it or say it, but she had been worried about getting him the perfect things. She wanted nothing more than to surprise him and make him happy. 

She blinks in surprise at his offered gift, eyes shooting up then down as she took it carefully in her hands. A small flush of happiness dusts over her pale cheeks. “Ah you really didn’t have to get me anything Cenric.” She murmured softly, but ultimately she was joyful, a warm feeling coming over her at his own thoughtfulness. 

Carefully opening the present, her eyes dance when she spots the cookies, he knew her too well, she was rather addicted to his cooking, but they froze on the necklace, widening. That she hadn’t expected, but she couldn’t stop the huge smile that followed. “It’s beautiful and perfect! I love it! Thank you!” She pulled it out gingerly to get a closer look at the bird charm, hearts practically in her eyes. She couldn’t have gotten anything better. She hugged him immediately, something possibly a little out of character, but she was too happy to stop herself. Besides hugging was needed on the holidays anyways. 

“Will you help me put it on?” She asked, wanting to wear it immediately rather than put it away. She’d keep it with her at all times if she could manage it.

    “ they don’t huh… “ Etty blinked, part shocked by Cenric’s disagreement but it was more shocking that part of what he said rang true. he must be getting better at this, impressive. 

      “ are you saying you’re not cute? nonsense. ” he laughed, finally loosing that cold composure he held moments before. ” I gave you a compliment, you should just say thank you and give me a cute smile. ” there wasn’t a lick of seriousness in his tone, Etty didn’t want him to take any of his words to heart. the guesses about who he was and then his weak reprimanding too.  

               “Ah... you better not be saying this just to get a reaction...”

Shoulders drooping with a sigh, the brunet shook his head with a small smile. The compliment, as much as if left him with a certain feeling of awkwardness, wasn’t entirely unappreciated ( though he still didn’t think ‘cute’ was an apt description for a thirty year old man ). 

The glass in his hand now completely empty, he set it down on the counter before him.

               “Round two? Maybe you could pay me back by buying mine this time. Aha.”

"Cenric! Merry Christmas!" Bright violet eyes in a happily flushed face approach them, black hair a little ruffled from the wind. She smiled at him brightly and holds out a wrapped present to him. It had been a little hard, finding a gift for the other, but she thought she had done well. A few toys and catnip for Charle, a new sweater, a recipe book and a little music box. The music box was special however and played her humming and singing softly rather than a random tune. (nightxngalesong)

Her arrival is, admittedly, a bit of a surprise. The smile is awfully infectious as she hands over the wrapped gift box, his usual stoic expression evaporating as a cheerful warmth fills his chest before he even took a peek inside. Even he wasn’t immune to the holiday spirit, it seems. 

                “Merry Christmas to you as well. It’s good to see you.” 

As he actually opens it, he can’t help but laugh. She really knows him too well. Probably a result of all that checking up on him she’d been doing since they first got to know each other; insistent on watching out for him despite being the younger of the two. Charlemagne would be more than happy to have new toys to try and chew through, and the other gifts are suited to his tastes perfectly. The little music box in particular is an adorable touch. 

                  “Thank you. But, ah... actually, I have something for you as well.” 

It’s not as impressive, at least that’s how the ex-hero thinks. A smaller box is given to her in return, containing some homemade gingerbread cookies and a dainty silver necklace with a bird in flight as the charm. Kind of fitting as well, if he says so himself.

      “ I dunno, a little stoic? slightly unapproachable too, but not horribly so. it’s like…like you’ve seen some things in your lifetime. a very experiences aura. ” he said all of this while staring intensely at him, nearly unblinking. miraculuosly, Etty managed to keep a straight face too. he was obviously putting much thought into this character he was building based on his drinking buddy’s appearance. but itwas always fun to try and guess things about people through their looks, you couldn’t avoid it with all of the interesting faces you met in his line of work. 

     “ but don’t worry, you’re still cute. it must attract many people to you. ” Etty didn’t view any of those traits he listed as bad things. they had their own charms and a personality that was in contrast to was certainly another one. 

If one were to look closely -- which Etienne undoubtedly was -- he might be able to notice the slightest shift in Cenric’s expression; looking a little nervous as to how accurate his guesses were. 

               “I guess... I’ve been called that a lot. People usually don’t find it so endearing though.”

As for any sort of aura... the brunet gulped down the last of his drink. He was the type of person who would prefer to at least try and remain positive despite everything, but there were some ghosts of his past he’d prefer to block out entirely. Meeting the other’s eyes, he soon looked away again, gaze fixed on the surface of the bar’s counter before them until he managed to recover. 

Clearing his throat, Cenric shook his head.

                “But cute? Aha... No, absolutely not.” 

Not that he made too much of an effort to mingle with people most days.

      why indeed… It’s a question he’s been asked constantly. every time he gives an answer that was made up either by himself or his managers, but this wasn’t business. Etienne didn’t want to lie to his new friend and he didn’t think there was any reason to worry about it getting out and making him look bad. “ because it was easy. I’m tall and my looks are pretty alright so- ” he paused for a chuckle, “ -why not? It’s pretty fun getting to travel and all.”

     “ thanks by the way, for your concern. you’re a lot kinder than you look. “ it’s a compliment, but it doesn’t sound that way, does it? “ guess now I’ve got another thing to pay you back for. “ 

                “Hah... That’s fair enough. I can’t fault you for that.”

He figured there was nothing wrong with doing something you were good at -- so long as it didn’t make you completely miserable in the long run. But, he did hope there was something else Etienne was passionate about, in the meanwhile. It was having something like that, no matter how small, that kept you sane he was sure. 

Raising his glass to sip at his drink, Cenric almost choked a little at the other’s additional words, letting out a small huff of amusement. 

               “Kinder than I look? What exactly do I look like?”

Definitely didn’t sound like much of a compliment, but he wasn’t taking much offense despite his confusion. Was it because of the tattoos? He bet it was because of the tattoos....

“Sounds like a nice place,” Gemüse said mildly, storing the name away for later use.  Saff…ron.  Sapphire?  Iron.  Sapphire Iron.  Saffron.    He imagined it’d come up on the phone.  

Gemüse rolled his shoulders, stepping into a stretch as they walked, perfectly content to walk in the quiet with a stranger while lost, despite the myriad of ways it could go wrong.   

“Who I am?” he repeated, finding the question a bit odd.  He always found telling people that he was a hero awkward, and was never one to actively seek out the spotlight.  “Well, I’m a hero from the United States, though I’m not active yet because of the legal stuff.  Things are pretty calm at home and I’ve heard they’ve been rough here, so…  I came mostly to provide moral support, more than anything.”  

Cenric almost froze on the spot; footsteps faltering for a moment before managing a quick recovery. Though, as much as he’d like to play it off coolly, his expression seemed suddenly nervous. A hero from the States... They had that much in common. Or they would have, if the brunet hadn’t retired the title some time ago. 

               “O-Oh. That’s pretty interesting. I grew up there myself, so... It’s good to hear things are going well.” 

It relieved him of a fraction of guilt, at least.
