Rankin Vs Leibovitz : The Queen’s portrait
The first photo is Rankin’s portrait of the Queen that he took in 2002 in celebration of Golden Jubilee. Two versions were sent of this portrait, one with the throne room in the background and the other with the union jack flag added behind. Rankin explained that he wanted to go “all Austin Power”, meaning he wanted to see the Queen smile a lot, which she did! The end result is a bight and colorful portrait that states the british mood in that time.
The second photo is Leibovitz’s portrait of the Queen that she took in 2007. This portrait is much more serious portrait than Rankin’s. The colour tones are much darker and neutral. The composition ads a heavy fealing. This portrait tone may have been influenced by the 2007 financial crises.
Both portraits show the same person but the mood is totally different. They really show the societal change between 2003 and 2007.
