Evaluation Criteria
Does it enhance the quality of life?
Is it self sufficient as a system?
Is it adaptable and flexible to accommodate variations within the social structure?
Can it be accessed by all members of the community?
Is it scale-able, from a grass root level to an organizational level?
Does it form a balance between monochronic and polychronic values of society?
Does it appeal to both individualistic and collectivist societies?

Redirection of thought, we analyzed the main areas where adverse conditions are identified and the subsequent process to tackle these conditions.
The process will help guide us through our design thinking.

Us and Progress
The designer does not, as a rule, begin with some preconceived idea. The words do sink in but the application of this idea requires massive efforts. As a human, my first instinct is to perceive and quickly form an opinion. Since 2017 (beginning of the design course), understanding the situation and after careful examination, does the designing of the solution come into the picture.
Talking about preconceived notions, I study design, in an engineering institute. The well-known Indian Institute of Technology, that is famous for producing world-class engineers. There is little knowledge about the vibrantly colored hair, music blasting and multi-faceted students that exist in the Department of Design.
Learning design in an engineering institute is, as I have heard from countless others as well, very different. Over the course of the raging war between engineers and designers, we have formed an understanding of how important we are to each other.
I told my friend from the Electronics department about OzCHI and he was super excited for me and the work I do. There might not be a complete conceptualization of the work done, but the appreciation for it is always there.
Having digressed enough, we have compiled our literature from Google. We read through various articles and curated information, having broadened our horizons gaining knowledge about the bigger picture and subsequently condensing the information, highlighting existing points proven to be helpful and the disadvantages that come along with it.
As of now, the recommended resources have been read. To go with that, we have done our own research about “Smart Sustainable Cities”, having gone through articles, case studies of existing smart cities and various reports of the same. Information on what steps they have taken, grass-root level changes and initiatives that have been made. We zoomed out and viewed the global context, particularly India and Australia. Having read “how smart are Australian cities?”, “Smart cities planned by the department of infrastructure, transport and regional development, govt. Of Australia”, “Government summit on smart cities for Arab context”, and looking at the aspect of ICTs.
We drew insights from our findings and formulated our own evaluation criteria.
What we are focusing on currently is the empowerment of human capital by adding to social capital through the innovative use of ICTs.
The curation of the literature review is underway.
Stay tuned!

Getting Started
Hello!
Started the blog a little late, but better late than never.
We are a group of three friends, where we constantly reflect on how unimaginable and uncanny this friendship is. Over the last two years since college commenced, this is surprisingly the first project we are working on together as a team. Currently, in our third year studying design engineering, the three of us decided to participate at the very last minute.
At the current moment, we are huddled up in one of our hostel rooms, reading through the reference texts. Having first gone through the brief, and discussed what our take on the brief is which each other, we quickly immersed ourselves into the reference material to further our understanding.
As of now, there is an ongoing discussion over what we have read until now, focusing on the very definition of social capital and smart cities, and the various aspects of what we have seen in India and how we relate it with the existing ideas.
The next 24 hours are going to push our design thinking to the limit and test us as designers. It’s an interesting opportunity to showcase our talent and find a novel solution to the given problem. We’ll be going through a lot of cup noodles and coffee to make sure we are able to deliver an exciting design idea at the end of the student design challenge.
Wish us luck!
