"What are you reading about so early?" Tony asks, lifting his cup to his mouth.

"Frottage," Steve answers sunnily, and Tony.exe immediately crashes, his triple shot of espresso going everywhere except down his esophagus.

"Ah, fuck," Tony spits out between coughs, looking down at his stained shirt.

"Jesus, Tony—" Steve quickly leaves his laptop to come over and rub his back. "Are you okay? Want some water?"

"Windpipe," Tony manages, putting his empty cup down somewhere. "I'm fine. Did you say frottage?"

"Yeah?"

Tony gets out one last cough. "Is that—why? Is that something you're interested in?"

"Well, I've never tried it before," Steve says, leaning back against the counter. "Seems like it has a lot of possibilities though. I was reading a transcript of a lecture on it."

When did Steve get so nonchalant about sex? How is he not blushing? Who gave him a sex ed syllabus? Why is there a lecture on frottage?

"Of course," Tony says slowly, and he can really only think of one reason why Steve is telling him this. "Steve, are you bringing this up because you want to do it with me?"

Steve's face brightens. "Do you want to?"

Tony squints at him, having lost all control over this conversation. "Do you want to?"

"Sure," Steve says, the look on his face bafflingly sincere. "I know it isn't your biggest hobby, but it could be fun."

Tony clears his throat. "You know, I don't know if I would call it a hobby."

"You think I could do it professionally someday?"

Oh, god. Tony considers wringing the espresso out of his shirt and into his mouth. He can't handle talking to Steve about this without at least one solid shot. Espresso, hard liquor, anything.

"Let's just pump the brakes here for a second and try it recreationally between friends before you put anything online," Tony says, as evenly as he can. "It's quite a career change."

Steve tilts his head, thinking. "Guess you're right. So do you want to get together after your meeting later?"

"In my office?" Tony asks incredulously. The walls are goddamn glass. Well, if Steve is into that, maybe he has time to swap them for one-way glass or—

"Might be easier to do it on my floor because all my stuff is there," Steve suggests. Tony nods because that probably gives them more privacy, and he's suddenly dying to know what stuff Steve has. "When do you want to come?"

"Come to your floor, you mean?" Tony confirms. He's pretty sure that's what Steve means because as much as Steve loves a plan, even he couldn't possibly expect to be able to plan that out, but after this little encounter, who's to say?

"Yeah," Steve says with a sweet, easy smile. "Do you think you'll be done your meeting before dinnertime?"

"I'll be done," Tony says. He doesn't say that he'll be done even if the meeting isn't because he will not pass Steve up. "How's four?"

"Sounds good," Steve says. Then he looks at Tony's shirt and laughs a little. "If you want to change, I can make you some more coffee."

Tony leaves the kitchen much more dazed and no more caffeinated than he was when he walked in.

i really love reading about steve learning to be himself after all the fighting is over and all the soft happy endings everyone has for him 🥹

he moves to the coast and takes up surfing and now he's tan all the time, he does some traveling and some volunteering, he goes back to school, he buys a farm and adopts a dog, he gets really into cooking or gardening or baking or knitting, he gets breakfast with his friends, he loves new york too much to leave so that's where he stays, he gets a teaching job, he's so out of the public eye that nobody thinks of him as cap anymore, he puts on a couple of pounds because his body is finally out of survival mode, he has a membership to the met, everything!!🥺🥺
