UBS analyst Steven Milunovich, who has a neutral rating on the stock, lowered his price target to 28 from 30.
“We think that fiscal 2016 could turn into a back-end loaded year with some margin erosion,” wrote Milunovich in a report. “We continue to forecast 12% revenue growth to $2.24 billion, but our EPS estimate drops from $1.20 to $1.01.
“An increase in personnel to support other clouds combined with a tough IT spending environment could moderately reduce the gross margin to 66%.”
Shares in Windcrest, Texas-based Rackspace were trading down nearly 3% as of early afternoon, near 25, in the stock market today.
Rackspace has struggled in competing with much larger Amazon Web Services, the cloud computing arm of Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), as well as Microsoft’s Azure service and Alphabet’s (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Google in the IaaS (infrastructure-as-a-service) market.
Amazon’s AWS is the biggest provider of infrastructure as a service (IaaS), in which client companies rent computers and data storage via the Internet cloud.
Rackspace’s strength has been in providing what it calls fanatical service, training and technical support, mostly to small and midsize businesses.
The company is looking to provide service for public clouds aside from its own.
The UBS analyst does not expect material revenue from AWS support until 2017.
“Early returns indicate that most AWS customers are choosing the more expensive Aviator support level. Google, a small cloud player up to now, is ratcheting up its effort. We expect that Google could look to Rackspace for services support. The decision to be more cloud neutral may work out, but the transition is looking expensive as existing personnel are trained and new experts are brought on,” Milunovich said.

Software optimization boosting Tencent’s storage performance

Making a large investment in buying new servers and adding computing power to your data center is not a good thing, if you are not able to maximize the return on investment. Have you ever considered that the software can be the bottleneck for your data center performance? I came across an interesting case about how Tencent achieved significant results in storage system performance through software and infrastructure optimization.
Most of you are probably familiar with Tencent, one of China’s top Internet service providers. Its popular products like QQ instant messenger*and Weixin*, as well as its online games, have become household names among active online users in the country.
With the popularity of its social media products and massive user base in hundreds of millions, it is not surprising that Tencent needs to process and store lots and lots data like images, video, mail and documents created by its users. If you are a user of Tencent’s products, you are likely contributing your photos and downloading your friends’, too. To manage such needs, Tencent uses a self-developed file system, the Tencent File System* (TFS*).
Previously, Tencent utilized a traditional triple redundancy backup solution which was not an efficient solution in storage utilization. The storage media was found to be a major cost factor of TFS. As a result, Tencent decided to implement an erasure-code solution using Jerasure* open source library running on Intel® architecture-based (IA-based) servers.
As Tencent engineers validated the new solution, they noticed the computing performance was lower than the I/O throughput of the storage and network subsystems. In other words, the storage servers were not able to compute the data as fast as the I/O subsystem could move them. Adding more compute power might appear as an obvious but costly solution. Instead, Tencent used software optimization tools like Intel® VTune™ Amplifier XE and Intel® Intelligent Storage Acceleration Library to identify inefficient codes in its system and optimize them for the Intel® Xeon® processor-based server. The results were very effective and the bottleneck of system performance moved to the I/O subsystems. This was then easily addressed by Tencent when it migrated to a 10 Gigabit network using Intel® Ethernet 10 Gigabit Converged Network Adapter.
As a result of the cost-effective optimization effort, Tencent was able to get the most out of the storage system it deployed. Tencent found the optimized erasure code solution effectively reduced storage space by 60 percent and storage performance enhanced by about 20 times, while the I/O performance of TFS improved by 2.8 times. With cold data now being processed using the new TFS system, Tencent has saved significant server resources and raised the performance-price ratio for storage.
The new solution not only contributed to performance and user experience. Tencent is also saving hundreds of kilowatts of energy as it no longer needed to purchase thousands of servers to meet its storage needs.

IoT Cloud
IoT Cloud is a platform from Salesforce. com that is designed to store and process Internet of Things (IoT) data and communicate with various cloud environments and other sources to trigger actions and provide actionable information for users.
The IoT Cloud is powered by Thunder, which Salesforce. com describes as a “massivelyscalable real-time event processing engine.” The IoT Cloud platform takes in the massive volumes of data generated by devices, sensors, websites, applications, customers and partners. Based on that input, the platform can initate actions for real-time responses. For example, wind turbines could adjust their behavior based on current weather data; airline passengers whose connecting flights are delayed or cancelled could be rebooked before the planes they are on have landed.
In another context, IoT Cloud can provide business users with much a much more comprehensive and integrated perspective on customers, without requiring technical expertise or the services of a data analyst. The platform can take in billions of events a day and users can build rules that specify events to act on and what actions to take. IoT cloud is data format- and product-agnostic; output connectors allow communication with Salesforce clouds or third-party services.

Domo Use Cases and Deployment Scope
Our organization used Domo as part of our business intelligence and analytics tools. All departments produced reports in a number of other programs and uploaded the data into Domo. Domo was then used to synthesize, summarize, and present the data for executive reporting. Additionally, we used Domo to create alerts that would notify us of changes to key metrics.
Domo Pros
Ease of use. Unlike many other business intelligence tools, Domo can be set up and used by pretty much anyone.
Beautiful reports. Domo creates some very striking reports and charts that are suitable for daily use as well as customer and board presentations.
It can combine data from disparate data sources. The tool has the ability to merge reports from different sources into one chart at a fraction of the time that it would normally take.
There are a number of preloaded designs for charts and data sources that can help you hit the ground running.
Domo Cons
The Domo App Store with connected applications could use some work. The pre-made reports can sometimes use a lot of work. This is not a Domo problem, per se, since the connected applications create the reports, but it does impact using Domo.
The program will automatically assign your values to dependent or independent datasets. These can sometimes cause problems when trying to create a graph.
Support is of little help when it comes to any data source outside of Domo.
