     I think a lot about Hala and Kukui going over who they want for Alola’s first champion. Raihan could’ve been offered the position, if anyone’s interested in doing something with that. Same for other notable trainers if they have a connection to Alola

Also: Guzma in the games calls Hala "Master" but like. I think the word "Kumu" is better. It means teacher: a "kumu hula," for example is the hula teacher. Think "sensei." You can call him Kumu Hala or just Kumu.

First things first: I’m not native Hawaiian. The other side of my family is and I did grow up in Hawaii, but neither of those things makes me an expert in native Hawaiian culture. Therefore, I’m not going to write up a Definitive Guide to the Hawaiian Religion here. Instead, I’m going to talk about a few stereotypes and how Alolan traditions reflect/don’t reflect the real world.

Hula — has cultural and religious significance, not just entertainment, there are male hula practitioners 

Four gods — Alola has four Tapu, one for each island, but there are a lot more Hawaiian gods and they aren’t limited to one island exactly. The gods usually aren’t portrayed as omnipotent/omnipresent, nor are they absolute moral leaders. Similarly, Alola’s Tapu are immortal guardians of their islands and it’s best not to mess with them, but in the end they are individuals.

There are a lot of demigods and spirits in Hawaii and it would make sense for Alola to have something similar, but I’d have to put a lot of thought into it before writing about those.

Kahuna — the word in Japanese is Island King and I like the implications of that for the role of kahunas in-universe rather than trying to apply the definition of real-life kahunas. For the purposes of the blog, the Kahunas are “kings” of their respective islands in the sense that they have the responsibility and authority to protect and nurture the island. Hala is a priest and he does care for the island’s spiritual needs as well as the physical.

You might have seen vaguely-Hawaiian islander chiefs who live in the lap of luxury with everyone else as their slaves, but that’s,,, not really accurate. The ruler’s job is to provide their people without everything they need.

Kapu — the code of conduct in ancient Hawaii and where Pokémon got the word Tapu from. I don’t know all the theology behind it but just know that there is one.

Colonization — If you get the chance to read about the colonization as written by native Hawaiians, do it.

I don’t think Alola was colonized by Unova. It may have been colonized by Kanto/Johto, but I think the Japanese influences are more because of immigration.

The fact that the Alola traditions have outlasted the monarchy is my big reason for thinking Alola has remained sovereign. There’s a complicated history between religion, monarchy, and colonization in Hawaii, so I’ll leave it at that.

okay so..... i don’t know if anyone is still expecting a thread reply from me, but here’s me saying that i am dropping all threads for this blog. i guess hala was on semi-hiatus for a while anyway, so here’s an official note. i’ll still be here, and i’ll still do dashcom from time to time; i’ll just be mostly on @hattricks. thank you!

What are some of the trials that plagued Hala's marriage? (well, plagued is a rough term. but i'm sure that with every relationship, there were some rough patches, and the occasional thing that required compromising on. )

Hala and his wife occasionally fought about whether he was giving enough time and attention to his family. For a while there was some tension because Hala’s nature would make it impossible to choose his family over his duties to the island. Luckily for them, Tapu Koko intervened and told Hala that since Luolu was a citizen of Melemele too, making her happy was part of his responsibilities.

     When I tell people in real life about tumblr rp, I usually call it “talking to my internet friends” or more specifically, “writing with my friends.”

     I’d say that roleplay has made me more sensitive to how my words may sound, how what I say doesn’t always convey what I mean. I’ve also gotten a lot less anxious about chatting to people.
