Longtime community leader Beverly Dudley to be honored with a bench in Victorville’s Center Street Park
VICTORVILLE — Beverly Dudley’s involvement and reputation in the community ran so deep that she quickly became a household name in the High Desert.
With three of her 17 grandchildren at her side, the 86-year-old grandmother who lived in the High Desert for 64 years died Jan. 27 in Everett, Washington, her family said.
“She was a loving mother who poured her heart into her family and the community,” said Dudley’s daughter, Suzanne Dudley-Farris, who resides in Franklin, Tennessee. “I don’t think she ever learned how to slow down.”
A memorial bench for Dudley will be dedicated at 11 a.m. on March 25 at Center Street Park in Victorville to honor the legacy of the woman who was involved in multiple clubs and community projects throughout the Victor Valley.
Dudley helped to develop and unveil Center Street Park, which was dedicated in 1958. Located off Hesperia Road in Victorville, the park includes baseball fields, playground equipment and several picnic areas.
Mayor Gloria Garcia, who knew Dudley and her family, said she lived near Center Street when the park property was a dirt field.
“Beverly and her family were involved in so many activities that we would run into each other all the time,” Garcia told the Daily Press. “She was a wonderful woman who helped to build our city.”
Dudley’s family plans to gather at the Memorial Rose Garden at Victor Valley College to remember the woman who helped to create the garden.
“She loved roses, so she planted rose bushes in the garden,” Dudley-Farris said. “The garden bridge was also dedicated to my late father, John Dudley.”
After living on Burning Tree Drive since the construction of the Victorville neighborhood, Dudley moved to Washington about two years ago to live with her daughter, Juliann Meyer, and her husband, Charles.
“When they moved into their house on Burning Tree, it had an odd-shaped lot with mounds of dirt,” Dudley-Farris said. “My mom created a unique multi-tiered garden with a pond that eventually got a lot of attention, including the Daily Press.”
Dudley’s many hobbies included sewing, gardening and creating miniature rooms. She was a prolific painter, winning awards at many fairs and shows, her daughter said.
A native of Pasadena who graduated from Alhambra High School and attended the University of California, Berkeley, Dudley and her husband, John Dudley, were married in 1952 and arrived in Victorville days after their wedding when John Dudley began his 38-year career as a teacher and coach at Victor Valley High School.
During her time in the High Desert, Beverly Dudley earned a teaching credential at California State University, San Bernardino and received several awards and participated in numerous organizations including:

Beverly Dudley loved to camp, taking three trips around the country and visiting almost all 50 states, including a trip to Alaska, her daughter said.
The couple participated in Elder Hostel programs around the country and the world. They also traveled to Hawaii, Egypt and throughout Europe.
Beverly Dudley is survived by her five children: Mary Ann Christy and her husband, Gene, of Apple Valley; Donald Alan Dudley and his wife, Romaine, of El Cajon; Suzanne Dudley-Farris and her husband, Sam, of Franklin, Tennessee; Juliann Meyer and her husband, Charles, of Snohomish, Washington; Leiann Ramezany of San Jose; as well as her brother Paul E. Showalter II and his wife, Nolene, of San Gabriel.
She also leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Beverly and John Dudley’s ashes will be buried alongside other family members during a private ceremony at Rose Hills Memorial Park in Whittier. The couple was married for 57 years.
Condolences may be sent to [email protected] or to 409 Benton Lane Franklin, TN 37067.

You’ve Never Seen Anything Like Alan Jackson’s Old Mansion! [Pictures]
Alan Jackson lived the dream after he shot to prominence as one of the most popular country singers of his generation, building himself a house that was like something out of a movie.
Jackson bought 135 acres in the affluent rural community of Franklin, Tenn., and began building a house there that was inspired by Tara from Gone With the Wind and the elaborate southern plantation-style homes Jackson had loved since he was growing up in Georgia. The 18,622-square-foot house took 23 months to build and was completed in 1997. Jackson and his wife Denise raised their three daughters in the kind of luxury few can dream of.
Dubbed Sweetbriar, the extraordinary property features a formal dining room, a formal living room, a home office with maple floors, a spacious family room with 22 ft. ceilings, a gourmet kitchen with adjoining breakfast room and a glass-enclosed porch on the first floor. There are four bedroom suites on the second floor, along with an exercise room and nanny quarters. The third floor has a game room, home theater and a custom pub.
There are more amenities outside the main home. The grounds include three ponds, a 10-acre lake, a boathouse, swimming pool, a barn with attached apartment and enclosed tennis court and basketball court. Jackson also built a massive 20-car garage to house his collection of classic cars.
Jackson and his wife sold the house in 2010 to downsize as their daughters got older and began spending less time at home and preparing to leave the nest. A buyer paid $28 million for the house, making it one of the largest private residence sales in Tennessee.

Franklin’s Virginia Bowman remembered for historic prowess
Buy Photo
Longtime Williamson County historian Virginia Bowman died during the weekend. She was 94.
Bowman served as the county historian more than 25 years, researching Williamson families and writing books on her discoveries.
"She was one of my best friends," current Williamson County historian Rick Warwick said.
"With her death, I have not only lost a great mentor, but I have lost a dear friend. We enjoyed the same people and history. She was a native and grew up here. She enjoyed not only her family history, but she had researched all the great and important families of Williamson County.
Bowman served as the county’s second historian, starting in 1972. She retired from her post in 2016.
Bowman was a member of the Church of Christ for more than 90 years, teaching a Tuesday afternoon ladies Bible class for 60 years.
She was also a member of Franklin Chapter 14, United Daughters of the Confederacy; trustee of the McGavock Confederate Cemetery Corporation; charter member of the Williamson County Historical Society; member of the Historic Zoning Commission and later a member emeritus; and author of "Historic Williamson County: Old Homes and Sites".
During her lifetime, she signed the articles of incorporation for the Carnton Association, which later formed into the Battle of Franklin Trust. In her later years, Williamson County and Franklin city officials honored her by having a cannon on the public square named "Virginia."
Members of the Franklin Chapter 14 of the United Daughters of the Confederacy serve as trustees for the McGavock Confederate Cemetery. The local chapter recently had a new historical marker place at the cemetery. From left, Jane Brophy, Louise Beauchamp, Bertha Gathmann, Nancy Bassett, Marlene Holmes and Lynn Garrett. "She’s one of those ladies in our community that you constantly relied on for the historical perspective of things," County Mayor Rogers Anderson said. "She was so instrumental in so many of the things we did that dealt with history, from the cannons on the square to the Williamson County seal. She was a wonderful lady. I didn’t know anyone who didn’t love her and she will be sorely missed."
Bowman is survived by her son, Joseph Hamilton Bowman IV and wife Gilda; daughter, Frances Colley Bowman; brother, Gordon Hicks McDaniel and wife Nancy; grandchildren, Joseph Hamilton Bowman V and wife Emily and William Otis Brent Bowman and wife Shelley; great grandchildren, Elizabeth Virginia, William Lane, Josephine Anna Jane and Matthew Hamilton Bowman.
After a private burial in Mt. Hope Cemetery, a memorial service will be held 4 p.m., Feb. 5 at Heritage Church of Christ, 1056 Lewisburg Pike, Franklin, TN with visitation from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Heritage Church of Christ Building Fund, P.O. Box 402, Franklin, TN 37065 or to the Nashville Humane Association, 213 Oceola Ave., Nashville, TN 3209-3115.
