Advertising men’s underwear.
William O’barr identifies, the open messages portrayed about the qualities of goods or services advertised, and the ideas being conveyed about society and culture as the two motivations behind advertising. Helga Dittmar elaborates on this, explaining that advertising doesn't  just sell a product but an aspirational lifestyle too, for example Helga, explains that underwear adverts that would feature a model family, father son dynamic supports the idea that only heteronormative family arrangements implicate success and happiness, or how this idea that comfortable, well fitting underwear is going to make you be able to achieve your goals, evident though adverts wear suited or sport attire men  are paired with a scantly-clad male in a well fitting pair of underwear.
During the second world war, advertisements of men were presented as heroes sporting anything from towels, cigarettes, boot polish etc. This is what I believed as an act of aspirational selling strategy, “buy these products and they will help you to become a hero too and help win the war.” And in a time of great Depression and low morale, any sign of hope, even by a simple advert of an heroic man next to some towels, was enough for people to buy and into this ideal. After the war, it became less about the model and more about the emphasis on comfort through the text and how underwear evolved through design improvements of mens underwear, to support advertisers selling points.
The advertisement of mens underwear, presented by figure 2 page 23, and Calvin kleins campaign, show the evolution of mens underwear advertisements from then to now. The Chilprufe  advertisement was of course selling underwear but back then was selling this ideology of this underwear is best for “national service” with a male model being presented in the press up position looking strong and determined. Mens underwear advertisements today very much sexualise the models, as the selling strategies in the 21st century of very much sex sells. “buy this underwear and look like this strong sexy muscular guy” but what I really liked about Calvin kleins most recent campaign showed once again how underwear advertisement is evolving

Adorned in dreams by Elizabeth Wilson- Chapter 8 reflection.
Popular culture in relation to this chapter, is what I believe to be a majority attitude, idea, and mindset. Elizabeth explains the means generated for the single women leads them to be no longer content with this idea of manufacturing their own clothes. Although men frowned upon this, it clearly was a sign of progress within in society, and as demand grew the consciousness of fashion became more obvious and therefore mass production took place embedding fashion into popular culture as it became accessible for more of the public.
Elizabeth talks about how the influence of sport or leisure activities shaped and changed fashion. Dance, seeming to be the most influential to fashion out of  leisure activities of the time, originated from the need of dance attire to evolve for movement, function and practicality. The structure of corsets restricted new conventions of dance and therefore had to be cut away from the hips. It was then that the performance of dance in theatres was an obvious display of fashion spectacle and women flocked to find fashion inspiration and influence.
This idea that journalism and advertising is this mirage of being, is as much influential then as it is today. The fashion imagery of so many advertisements, campaigns etc. that we’re constantly being bombarded with ,consciously or sub consciously have shaped my aesthetic and style that it is today. Whether I like it or not these images are influencing me and shedding light on whats considered in the present moment of the industry as right or wrong. These advertisements don't just sell you a product or trend but a lot of the time they sell a lifestyle and a desirability and I guess speaking for myself I can say I buy into that.
Wilson quotes  ‘Fashion…as a collective as well as a highly individualistic enterprise, is a means of expression on a mass scale of solidarity and group identity’ This idea that fashion is an individual form of creative expression, but it can also be grouped to represent a culture or society but can also unveil class and creed.

MoDA collection
The item I chose from the MoDA online collective, was this wallpaper design that was printed in 1928, as Ive always been a fan of interior design and its so interesting to look at pieces that were once displayed in peoples homes. The design of the wallpaper really fascinated me as its just not something you could imagine that would come from that era and to be featured in peoples homes. It feels very exotic with these printed tall bamboo plants and it was clearly all about bringing a bit of the outdoors in which I think was very creative for that time period. I also like thinking about the mindset of people of that time when they bought the wallpaper. Was it a subtle escapism from the reality of life? and what I love about the design, although decades old it still feels quite contemporary, whether thats down to the quite clean design and layout of the wallpaper or the fact that many current designers and interior decorators have just taken inspiration from it.

WHY CLOTHING IS NOT SUPERFICIAL BY DANIEL MILLER.
According to Miller having spent time with the Trinidadian people, style is incredibly important to them, because in a western society where your occupation or accumulation of achievements defines you , the Trinidadian people believe that its not freedom of choice to work, you have to work to survive so that should not be a reflection of who you are ,but rather having the freedom of which to construct yourself through individual and transience style is what they believe defines you in that moment , and its through your style that the Trinidadian people can communicate who they are that day , as Miller quotes “ how one looks, is who one is”
Miller also made comparisons between the types of clothes Madrilenian and londoner people wear. in London he says that people are encouraged to express themselves through clothes however, He writes that Madrilenian people dress to conform, they tend to wear what they consider to be classic, formal, and sometimes quite expensive clothing and getting ready usually will be quite time a consuming process before they actually foot set out the door . This is because of the communal and public pressure of society to look a certain way, as everyone (generalisation) needs to be a representation of the country, theirs no individual expression its all rather just for show as quoted in Miller’s text “wearing shabby clothes at home seems to confirm that the role of clothing is to demonstrate this public appearance and is not a medium for individual or private self expression”

COLOUR PALETTE EXPERIMENTATION
This was our first trial with photoshop of the year, creating a custom colour palette from our image of inspiration. I decided on this photograph as i felt it best captured the depth and contrast between the hues of the image, I also loved the cocktail of colours chosen, it has a contemporary edge, which I thought would be ideal to present in the palette.
We started with the main foundation colour, the one that covers the highest percentage of the image, and has the grandest presence. using the eye dropper tool to specifically swatch the colour of the image, and then making it accessible to apply into the colour palette. i continued the steps with all the colours of the image that i felt best encapsulated the range of hues within the inmage; changing the percentage of colour visible from each hue within the colour palette to create a palette that was true to the image.

THE EXECUTION PROJECT WAS THE MOST EXCITING SO FAR. LOOKING AT WORK FROM CRAIG MCDEAN AND ANALYSING HIS CREATIVE CONCEPT PROCESS, AND USING THAT AS INSPIRATION FOR OUR SHOOT. WE STUDIED HIS MARCH 2016 EDITORIAL PIECE FOR VOGUE UK. WE IDENTIFIED SOME CLEAR THEMES THAT HAD CLEARLY INSPIRED HIS WORK, THE MOST EASILY PERCIEVED WAS THE COLLABORATION OF SPORTS AND FASHION AND MOST PARTICULARY FLORALS, THE BLATANT ADDIDAS OVERSIZED SWEATSHIRT PAIRED WITH THESE ULTRA FEMINIE, AND PYSCADELLIC FLORALED SKIRT. YET THE STYLING OF THE MODELS WERE STRONG AND ADROGYNOUS, THE MAKEUP WAS GRAPHIC AND BOLD, WITH THICK EYELINER DRAWN AROUND THE EYES, AND EYEBROWS BLEACHED BLONDE . THE HAIR HAD NOT BEEN TAMED, WITH PURPLE ROCK AND ROLL MULLET, SHAVE SIDES, AND BLUNT CUT FRINGES, IT WAS A STRONG LOOK THAT TIED TO THIS IDEA OF ADROGYNY AND IN A SENSE FEMINISM. THE SET OF THE SHOOT HAD THIS WISTERIA LANE, DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES GONE ROGUE, UNSETTLING FEELING WITH THE KITCH  WALLPAPER AND THESE BIG DARK ROSES PEERING OVER THE WHITE PICKET FENSES THERE WAS DEFINITELY A THEME OF SUREALISM. ONE THING I ADMIRED WAS HE COULD OF SO EASILY TAKEN THE EASY ROUTE AND BEEN LAZY AND USED SOME SPORTS LOCATION, OR SPORTS STYLE SET. BUT INSTEAD HE CREATED A UNIQUE SET AND COMPOSITION OF THESE BIG HOLES IN THE GROUND AND ALMOST LIKE OVERSIZED GOLD BALLS, WITH ONE OF THE MODELS STANDING IN THE HOLE, IT NODDED TO THE THEME WITHOUT BEING SO BLATANTLY DIRECT.
