It’s fashionable to say that the ‘90s were better, especially when it comes to rap. Here at Complex, we often go out of our way to catalog and defend the contemporary era because hey, we got now and we don’t care who got next. There’s no denying that the '90s yielded a huge amount of top-shelf rap music. But there’s nothing more dangerous than being blinded by nostalgia. Lest y'all forget, for every Doggystyle, there's a Doggfather.
Still, the '90s really were a golden age for rap. In the early part of the decade, the genre was ushering in its platinum era. By the end of the decade, it was a full-on commercial monster, a dominant force—the dominant force—in pop music. Artists like Ice Cube, Method Man, A Tribe Called Quest, Public Enemy, Busta Rhymes, and De La Soul were shaping youth culture worldwide.
Maybe '90s rappers weren’t as revolutionary as their '80s counterparts, the forefathers who laid the groundwork for hip-hop. But the '90s rappers matured the form, modernizing rap to the style that’s still prevalent today. Though the era was marred by controversy, violence, arrests, coastal rivalries, and finally tragedy, the '90s stand as the heyday of the greatest, most impactful, influential artists rap has ever produced.

90s sitcoms

A situation comedy, or sitcom, is a genre of comedy centered on a fixed set of characters who carry over from episode to episode. Sitcoms can be contrasted with sketch comedy, where a troupe may use new characters in each sketch, and stand-up comedy, where a comedian tells jokes and stories to an audience. Sitcoms originated in radio, but today are found mostly on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. This form can also include mockumentaries. Which Sitcom that premiered between 1990-1999 would you call your favorite? Discuss 90s Sitcoms Here.
THE FRESH PRINCE OF BEL AIR

Will Smith more or less plays himself in this good-natured NBC sitcom. As the show's popular theme song explains, fictional Will's mom sends him away from his rough Philadelphia neighborhood to live with wealthy Uncle Phil and Aunt Vivian in Bel-Air. Will often has fun at the expense of stuck-up cousins Carlton and Hilary.
Theme songs: The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
WILL AND GRACE

In the original eight-season run of this groundbreaking sitcom, best friends Will, a meticulous corporate lawyer, and Grace, a neurotic interior decorator, share a New York apartment after Grace leaves her fiancé at the altar. Will and Grace, along with their pals Karen, an outspoken socialite, and Jack, a free-spirited actor, face the highs and lows of life in Manhattan together. From sex, dating and divorce to cutting cultural commentary, nothing's off limits -- and all is fair game -- in this Emmy-winning comedy.
First episode date: 21 September 1998
FAMILY MATTERS

Policeman Carl Winslow has enough to deal with on the job. But when he gets home, he still has to handle kids, his wife, Harriette (whose character was first introduced on the sitcom "Perfect Strangers"), his mom, a sister-in-law and Urkel, the nerd next door who doesn't understand that he doesn't actually live with the Winslows.
Theme songs: As Days Go By, What a Wonderful World, Family Matters Ending Theme Song.
SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH

Sabrina Spellman is a teenager with magical powers who comes from a long line of witches. Until going away to college, she lived with her wacky aunts, who would teach her to use her witchcraft wisely, and Salem, the talking black cat, who always has a scheme up his paw. As a high-school student, Sabrina is less judicious about using her powers than when she enters adulthood. The series is based on a 1960s comic-book series of the same name and an animated TV series that originally aired in the 1970s.
MOESHA

Moesha Mitchell is a teenager juggling school, friendships and romance. Previously the female head of the household, she is learning to love and trust her father's new wife. While at home, she does her best to be the "glue" that helps hold her family together.
Theme song: Moesha Theme Song
MARTIN

Stand-up comedian Martin Lawrence drives this irreverent sitcom as a sexist, cocky and wisecracking radio station talk show host. His girlfriend and eventual wife, Gina, puts up with him -- although clashes do occur. Martin's friends, Tommy and Cole, help him get into trouble.
First episode date: 27 August 1992
FRIENDS

Three young men and three young women -- of the BFF kind -- live in the same apartment complex and face life and love in New York. They're not above sticking their noses into one another's business and swapping romantic partners, which always leads to the kind of hilarity average people will never experience -- especially during breakups.
First episode date: 22 September 1994

90s FASHION
I'm here for '90s fashion, and right now. I want it to stay in the '90s forever because this fashion puts comfort first and everything else later.
One of the most popular early '90s looks was grunge. It entered mainstream fashion in 1992, when grunge bands likeNirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden rose to popularity. This look included darker colored plaid flannel shirts, stonewashed or ripped jeans, Doc Martens, combat boots, Birkenstocks, and high top sneakers.

The two main influences on late '90s fashion were a 1970s revival in women's clothing and business casual for men. ... Men's business casual looks were made popular by the dot-com boom and included dress slacks, chinos, khakis, belts, long sleeve button-up shirts, sweaters, dark socks, dress shoes, and an optional tie.
Clothing styles in the 1990s were heavily influenced by popular culture; the hip-hop movement helped contribute to the baggy and bright clothes (with obligatory high-tops) that teenagers sported, while films like Clueless promoted designer schoolgirl style (babydoll dresses, tartan skirts, thigh-high stockings.

Kids these days are embracing these returning trends, while those of us who were around in the 90s can't help but feel nostalgic.
We may no longer be at the age where we can wear butterfly clips, plastic bracelets, or ripped tights, but if you were to ask anyone who knew us back in the good ol' days, our clothes and accessories earned us some serious style creds.
