This is El Chaparral's famous bean soup. The recipe has remained the same since 1977! They celebrated the 50th anniversary in February 2022. Carlos and Mary Garcia sold their home in 1972 to open the first location in Helotes, Texas.

The Garcia family founded The Nicha --originally named Minit Taco-- in 1977. In 2003, the Garcia sons renamed the restaurant to honor their mother, Dionisia Garcia. All of their food is based on her recipes where you can "taste the tradition."

Viola Barrios circa 1977, founder of Los Barrios restaurant. The building was originally a boat house that Barrios converted. From Bustamante, Mexico, Barrios brought precious family recipes to pass on to the next generation.

The historic L&J cafe in El Paso, Texas was established in 1927. The restaurant is now in its fourth generation of family-owned business. This restaurant used to be a speakeasy during the Prohibition but has always provided traditional and authentic Mexican food.

Mi Tierra Cafe was founded in 1941 in San Antonio's Mercado by Pedro and Cruz Cortez. This family-run restaurant features the beautiful mural "American Dream" painted by Jorge Cortez and restored and updated by Robert Ytuarte. Click on the link to see the interactive mural!
