Worthless
Tumblr media
Johnny Cade hated Sylvia. Even before Dally told him she cheated on him, he hated her.
Why?
Because hearing her name reminded him of his sister. His sweet, loveable siter who would save up her measley allowance for months just so she could buy him ice cream or chocolates on his birthday. His thoughtful sister, who would take him to spy on schools so he could learn.
His sister who ran away when he was thirteen. His sister who his parents had said jumped off a cliff because she didn’t want him.
When he was fifteen, his father told him that someone agreed to pay for his education, so his lifelong dream was fullfilled. But it was all wrong, because Sylvia wasn’t there.
But no matter what he did, he couldn’t blame her. Who would want a kid like him? No wonder his sister left.
The day he met Dally’s girlfriend was the worst day of his life.
---
He had been sitting on the sidewalk after his parents kicked him out, when a girl had come up to him. She had silky black hair and creamy skin.
She hesitated for a minute before saying, “Johnny Cade right?”
“Who’s askin’?” he had choked out.
She sat down next to him, and offered him a chocolate bar. He stared at it suspiciously, wondering if he could trust her or not.
“I’m Sylvia.” she said softly, smiling at him.
“D-Dallas’s girl?” he said, scooting away from her. He had heard her rep, he had seen Dallas look lost and broken when he thought no one was looking after the first time he discovered that she had cheated.
She smiled sadly, and Johnny couldn’t help but doubt whether she really cheated on Dally. She didn’t seem the type. “Go on, honey, eat it, will you Sugar? It might make you feel better.”
Putting aside his thoughts, he took the chocolate bar and slowly munched on it.
“Your parents do this?” she asked, voice trembling as she fingered one of his cuts and bruises. He thought he detected a hint of anger in her voice.
He only nodded. Deciding not to push it, she switched the topic. “Do you go to school?”
He swallowed, wiping his fingers on his jeans. “Yeah. For ‘bout a year now. I like it okay, it’s fun. Least I don’ ‘ave to see the old man or my mother.”
He flinched suddlenly as he accidently pressed down on one of the bruises when he leaned back.
“Oh, you poor thing, come here.” she said, scooting closer and enveloping him in her arms.
It was an action so similar to that of his sister’s he shivered at the thought. She kinda looked like her too come to think of it. But his Sylvia never wore as much make up. He just let her hold him for a while, stroking his hair. She then leaned down and kissed his head.
“Hey!” a voice called.
They both looked up to see a furious Steve Randle marching towards them. “Don’t be tryin’ any o’ your tricks with our Johnny, Sylvia.” he said, spitting her name like it was a curse. “Get out, just wait till Dally hears what you’ve been up to when he’s in the reformatory.”
Her cool, collected mask faltered for a second at the mention of Dallas Winston.
“I-I don’t... I didn’t-”
“It don’t matter what ya did. GET OUT!” he shouted, and she hurried off casting a wistful, longing look over her shoulder.
Johnny knew Steve was trying to look out for him, but he had a habit of taking things like this too far.
“She didn’t hurt ya Johnny, did she?”
“N-No, Steve, I think you got it wrong, she was just-”
“No.” he said, cutting him off. “Your the one who’s got it wrong. Broads like Sylvia... They ain’t like Evie. They ain’t sweet and loyal, they’re bad business. And you better stay away from ‘em, because do you remember what ‘appened to the last guy she was with when Dally got his hands on him.”
Johnny shuddered as he remembered the state he’d been in when the ambulance had come. Steve placed a hand on his shoulder.
“Just be careful, okay, Johnnycake?”
Johnny thought she was just being nice, but he guessed he didn’t know much about girls. He liked Steve’s girl, Evie, she was alright, but he remembered how when he’d met Sandy he had been sure she was flirting. When he’d told Soda there was something about her that rubbed him the wrong way, he’d just laughed and told him to quit hallucinating.
“Alright.” he agreed. “I’ll be careful ‘round her.”
---
It didn’t matter, because Johnny never saw Sylvia again.

Tag-Along (A.K.A The Evie Fanfic No One Asked For)
Tumblr media
Evie was lying face down on her bed, when the door was thrown open. The three girls looked up to see a grinning Sandy.
“Who’s the boy?” Sylvia asked, inspecting her newly painted nails.
Sandy smirked. “You’d never believe it. He’s waaaaay out of your league, because I got the one boy you would never even DREAM of touching. Because I got Sodapop Curtis, and you have Dallas Winston.”
Renata dropped her nail polish, mouth hanging open. “Hang on, Sodapop Curtis? The hottest guy in all of Tulsa?”
Sylvia snorted. “In all of the Gas Stations maybe. You honestly think I would’ve gone for Dallas if he wasn’t so good lookin’?”
Evie didn’t say anything, but stared wide eyed at her best friend, before her mouth settled in a frown.
“Remind me how Sodapop looks again...” she mumbled, causing all of them to look at her as if she’d grown three heads.
“What? In my defense, I never hung out around boys much unlike you three.”
Sandy shook her head. “That’s settled. You’re coming with me to see Soda tomorrow, then you’ll understand.”
“He really is a doll.” Renata admitted. “Sandy’s lucky.”
Sylvia narrowed her eyes at Renata before shaking her head, and picking up her magazine again.
“I’m headed to the library tomorrow, and then Sylvia and I are going shopping and-”
“Is that really worth more than our friendship?” Sandy asked, eyes welling up with tears, and pushing out of lower lip for extra effect. “I-I just thought that-”
Sylvia and Renata bristled, noticing that the act was fake.
“Leave her alone.” Renata said, sticking up for Evie. Sure, Evie could hold her own ground, but Sandy was devious. She wasn’t a Soc, and unfortunately, Evie was fiercely loyal to her friends.
Sandy sniffled, careful not to let loose any tears that could ruin her makeup. “But-”
“She said, LEAVE HER ALONE Sandy.” Sylvia all but spat at her. As the unofficial leader, it was an unspoken rule that they all listened to her.
Sandy stopped, but smiled anyway, knowing that she’d already suceeded. Evie bit her lip, turning to Sylvia.
“Can... Can we go shopping some other day? I’d kinda like to meet this Sodapop guy anyway, gotta make sure he’s good for my best friend, don’t I?”
Sylvia frowned and threw a glare at Sandy, but nodded. “Sure, whatever. Dallas is in jail anyway, gotta find a way to bail him out.”
---
When they reached the DX the next day, Sandy waited impatiently by the door, fixing her hair and reapplying her makeup in the glass. Evie had gone for her natural hair today, dark brown.
“Sandy!” she heard someone call as he strolled out of the DX.
Sandy plastered her sweetest smile on her face, smoothing down her skirt, which reached her knees. She had on a red shirt and matching lipstick.
Evie was wearing shell-pink lipstick and a black crop top that showed off her midsection. Her rose skirt barely brushed her thighs, and a silver bracelet danged on her wrist. She wasn’t dressing to impress anyone, it was just comfortable.
“Soda!” cried Sandy as she threw herself at him, immediatley kissing him.
Soda melted into it, only pulling away after a few minutes. “Steve! Come meet my girlfriend.”
And then, Evie’s world stopped, becuase at that moment, out strolled the most goodlooking guy she’d ever seen.
He was tall and muscular with jet black hair combed in complicated swirls. For some reason the grease and grime just made him hotter. The guy - Steve - looked at her for a minute, raising an eyebrow, and Evie had a ridiculous urge to smoke a cigarette.
“Which one o’ the two, the goodlookin’ one, or her friend?”
Evie’s heart sunk a bit. Of course he noticed Sandy. Who was she? Just a tag-along, and that’s all she’d ever be.
“Me!” Sandy said brightly, her voice thick like honey.
Steve nodded. “So this is Sandy? What’s the other one’s name?”
“Evie.” she responded quickly, maybe a bit too eagerley. “Evie Ellis.”
He smirked. “Pretty name for a pretty girl. And every pretty girl deserves a pretty boy.” Evie was starting to get confused abou the overuse of the word pretty. “You wanna go out once my shift is over?”
Her heart beat against her chest and she found herself agreeing. By the time she headed back to the apartment, all she could think was, ‘The girls are going to be SHOCKED’.

I Loved You Too Much
Tumblr media
Sylvia wasn’t a cold, heartless monster. She did love people.
She loved bold Renata who was never afraid to speak her mind and stuck up for Evie, defending her because she reminded her of her seven younger siblings.
She loved Kathy and her loud voice and mindless jokes, but at the same time would kill anyone who hurt them.
She loved Angela who had a mouth dirtier that any boy’s and could take down half of Tulsa.
She loved Khloe, with her bright grins and smiling eyes, and her endless chatter about the most obscure things.
She loved Evie, quiet Evie who did well in school, but could beat up a soc better than most people.
She didn’t love Sandy.
She loved Dallas Winston, and his irrestable charm, cunning ways, and most of all his soft smiles when he thought she wasn’t looking.
But none of them she loved more than the one she would never be able to see again.

8-year-old Sylvia Cade could hear her father and stepmother arguing and throwing things at each other.
“Sylvia?” a small voice asked as a dark shape darted into her room and snuggled under the covers, clinging to her.
“Johnny?” she asked, peering down at her little brother.
He was shivering, tears streaming down his face as the small seven year old sobbed into her shirt.
“Oh, don’t cry Johnny, I’m sure mom and dad will stop fightin’.”
“It-It ain’t that.” he sniffled. “I just saw some kids earlier today an’ I wanted ‘em to play with me, but they said they had school.”
Sylvia stroked his hair. They’re parents hadn’t tried to give either of them an education, saying it was a waste of their time and money to try and put their useless children through school. So Sylvia and Johnny would peek through windows, picking up on everything they could.
“I wanna go to school, Sylvia.” he whined. “I wanna learn too!”
Sylvia’s heart clenched and she swore that even if it was the last thing she did, Johnny would go to school.
“Johnny, you’re a strong boy right?”
She felt him nod against her. She relaxed and held him tighter.
At the age of fourteen, she ran away, doing odd jobs to try and make enough money to perhaps get Johnny into a school. It never worked.
Finally, when she thought all hope was lost, she decided to head back home and apologize to Johnny for ever leaving him. On the way, she was stopped by a soc, maybe 20. She was sixteen then.
“Hey, beautiful, what’s a doll like you doing by her lonesome? Wanna go back to my place?”
Her heart beat in her chest, her mind screaming Dally’s name.
“Sorry, I’ve got a boyfriend.” she replied cooly.
“And where’s he now, I can fight ‘im.” he told her, sliding an arm around her waist.
“He’s in the cooler, and just you wait. He’ll flatten you when he gets out.” Sylvia snapped.
She pushed past him, and he yelled after her, “I’ll pay you.”
That stopped her in her tracks, a desperate plan slowly forming in her head.
“How much?”
“As much as you want, baby.”
She turned back to him, stepping closer. “Enough to send a boy to school?”
He smirked. “Only if you come with me whenever I ask.”
Dally would hate her. He’d never want to see her again.
But Johnny could get his dream. That’s what she’d been trying to do for the past two years wasn’t it? So he wouldn’t have to sit outside schools, hoping one day he could sit in the classroom.
And from that day on, Sylvia and Dally’s relationship became strained, and she knew it was her fault. He might not be the best boyfriend, but he’d never cheat on her. Now she did it all the time, and no one ever knew why.
Yes, she ruined her relationship, but only because she loved her brother too much.
