Even years later, I see these scenes and really wonder what the hell the showrunners were thinking if not hinting hitting viewers over the head with Jonsa.
[Chorus:]
When I wake up, I'm afraid
Somebody else might take my place
When I wake up, I'm afraid
Somebody else might take my place

Ah yes.
I don't even ship Jonsa but GRR did mention that Sansa fell wildly in love with Waymar Royce, dark haired and gray eyed with a slender figure, a brother of the Night's Watch (by his own will), a descendant of the First Men and a very old dynasty of Kings, whose motto is We Remembers and whose house wanted to join Robb Stark's side during the War of the Five Kings

Jon: I like your dress.
Sansa: Thank you. It was 50% off!
Jon: I’d like it 100% off.
Sansa: The store can’t just give clothes away.
Jon: That not what I-
Sansa: That’s a terrible way to run a business, Jon!

Jon and Waymar Royce
The prologue to AGoT introduces the reader to Ser Waymar Royce, the son of a Lord with too many sons. The most interesting thing about Ser Royce, is that he shares a remarkable amount of similarities with our protagonist, Jon Snow.
Appearance
Waymar Royce is described as follows:
He was a handsome youth of eighteen, grey-eyed and graceful and slender as a knife
- AGoT Prologue
Notice how similar this description is to Jon:
Jon’s eyes were a grey so dark they seemed almost black, but there was little they did not see. He was of an age with Robb, but they did not look alike. Jon was slender where Robb was muscular, dark where Robb was fair, graceful and quick where his half brother was strong and fast.
- AGoT Bran I
Their wardrobes are also incredibly similar:
He wore black leather boots, black woolen pants, black moleskin gloves,
and a fine supple coat of gleaming black ringmail over layers of black wool and boiled leather
- AGoT Prologue
He was clad in black from head to heel; high leather riding boots, roughspun breeches and tunic, sleeveless leather jerkin
Black moleskin gloves covered his hands
- AGoT Jon IX, ACoK Jon I
Just by appearance alone, GRRM is connecting these two characters
Social Standing
Both Royce and Jon are disliked by their Black Brothers because of their high birth. While Jon is a bastard, so lower than Royce, Jon being a Stark (with an uncle who is a Ranger) gives him extra social status within the ruling class of the Nights Watch.
The prologue is told from Will’s POV, who extremely dislikes Royce:
It is hard to take orders from a man you laughed at in your cups, Will reflected as he sat shivering atop his garron
He also thinks of him as “lordling”, and believes he’s only a Ranger because he’s a Lord’s son (probably true).
We’ll see this attitude present in Jon’s POV too, but a lot of readers don’t realize that Jon is exactly like Waymar Royce, because we see it from Jon’s POV instead of Pyp or Grenn’s. Both of them have a smug arrogance while never considering that their skills come from rich families, things that the men they treat poorly were never allowed to have. While we see Royce being smarmy, we see Jon physically bash on recruits of lesser skill without trying to teach them. If not for Donal Noye, Jon may have never progressed to the character he becomes, and would have been almost exactly like Royce.
Dance With Me
While Ser Waymar is painted in an exceptionally negative light throughout most of the prologue, he has a rather heroic moment right before he dies:
Ser Waymar met him bravely. “Dance with me then.” He lifted his sword high over his head, defiant
The most memorable line from the prologue is, of course, dance with me. It was a bold line to throw at a mystical ice warrior before he attacks you, and serves to keep Waymar Royce in your mind long after he’s died.
But, most importantly, it provides an explanation for one of Jon’s last thoughts:
A snowflake danced upon the air. Then another. Dance with me, Jon Snow, he thought. You’ll dance with me anon.
- ADWD Jon XII
GRRM is clearly connecting Jon to Waymar by repeating this line, and foreshadowing Jon’s eventual face-down with the Others.
Jonsa Foreshadowing
Besides it being an incredibly impressive writing feat that GRRM can fit so many parallels into a character that only had one chapter, the parallels between Royce and Jon could also serve another purpose. After the prologue to AGoT, we almost never hear of Waymar Royce again. And every time we do hear of him, it is nothing about him personally, only that men have been sent looking for him beyond the wall; with the exception of Sansa Stark. She thinks of him in AFfC:
She had fallen wildly in love with Ser Waymar, she remembered dimly, but that was a lifetime ago
- AFfC Alayne I
So Sansa Stark fell wildly in love with a man who looks and acts extremely similar to Jon Snow? Interesting. Especially considering she’s the only one to think of Ser Royce at all.

I want to see characters being taken care of in an explicit and worshipful way. Home-cooked meals. Hair brushed and braided by gentle hands. Little gifts just because.
I want to read about characters who are not used to kindness being bombarded by acts of service. This trope works romantically and platonically. Give me found family and acts of service - all the ways a character is wrapped up in wordless, explicit care after years of cruelty and having no idea how to handle. I need it.
