been obsessing over zhongchi lately, specifically over post 1.1 reconciliation.

i need more fics like "like a stray in morepesok" where every step of reconciliation is brutal and ugly. where childe doesn't trust zhongli the way he used to before. where zhongli slowly, painfully realises just how deep the betrayal that childe felt. where zhongli finally comprehends just how much childe lost to fulfill a contract he didn't even know existed.

a lot of reconciliation fics i've found had childe giving in to zhongli after a monologue of apology and then they kissed and made up.

no, i need childe so angry he's calm. i need his hate to run cold. i need him to build a distance of polite apathy so wide that zhongli feels helpless.

im not under any illusion that, if childe's mission to steal the gnosis was real and there was no contract between zhongli and tsaritsa, childe wouldn't betray zhongli. he's duty bound and his loyalty is ultimately to the tsaritsa.

but maybe it's just bcs im petty and if someone betrayed me the way zhongli did to childe, i would've been spiteful. mostly it's bcs i just want zhongli angsty over childe instead of childe being so lovesick he's ready to just forgive (though never forget).

i think i just want the ugly truth of reconciliation after such significant betrayal. no matter how childe doesn't hold a grudge, i wouldn't think he'd just lay down and take it.

or maybe i just want to see the calm that zhongli had cultivated for over six thousand years to crack, crash and burn bcs of this mortal that had become unexpectedly important to him.

He avoids showing them how he really feels and pushes them to resent him instead, despite all their attempts to understand him.

He leaves them without a word again and again, forcing them to desperately attempt to fill in that gap in their lives where he once stood. Just as he once needed to.

And that's something he will never escape from.
