most of the time everything sucks but when the sky is blanketed in dark blue-grey clouds after heavy raining and the sun starts to peek through the clouds so that the tops of trees glint pale green and every white structure is starkly, blindingly silhouetted against the sky i’m ok.

this is so specific but in sinners I really liked how the cotton plantations are depicted. there's so many shots of them driving or walking through cotton fields which just feel infinite and really span into the distance, maybe a single tree in the frame. it's such a small detail but it really conveys the sense unending labour and the scale of exploitation of Black people in that industry in the US, like of course the cotton fields would have seemed/felt endless, especially as you work in them all day... Ryan Coogler i love you

Delta Slim is also just like. God. The way he grabs the guitar for Sammie before they run upstairs, the way he wants Sammie to introduce himself. Everyone is fighting for Sammie to live on in this film but Slim is fighting at every point for Sammie’s music because he understands how important it is.

We was never gonna be free. We've been running around everywhere looking for freedom. You know damn well you was never gonna find it. Until this.

that moment by the end of sinners where the harrowing opening scene of sammie walking into the church bloody and beaten, shellshocked, terrified, holding his broken guitar, and his father is welcoming him back into the fold of the church like a prodigal son, and it seems to be the perfect set up for a religious cautionary tale of the consequences of straying from god... but it's then resolved in this instant transition where you see sammie driving away, crying, still clutching his guitar despite it all and it hits all in one moment that he has rejected christianity and chosen blues even though he's just gone through this horrible, traumatic event "because" of "the devil's music" - that he has uncovered and refused the abusive fallacy at the center of christianity that the bad things that happen to you if you stray are because of the things you love that are against bible doctrine, that it's your fault and you've brought it upon yourself. and he said no! he said no. and then we see him go on and live to have this successful career and know that he was right, that the association of blues with the devil was a lie. that's it that's what it's like. i bawled my eyes out at the movie theatre especially in combination with the beauty and terror of the piece the resistance of the film, the scene where the spirits of the past and future all come together to unapologetically embody that music, that history, even as they are surrounded by flames burning the building down, and it's like: fuck you, we'll have the party in hell, then, but god damn it we will have it
#I thought it made so much sense and was so beautiful that he left the church still clutching his broken guitar in the end#bc it was also his literal defense#the scene where he whacks remmick in the head with it is such a powerful climax showing his resistance to him#i looooved how the guitar was depicted. the way the score and camerawork put it in focus throughout the film was amazing#the mid credits scene where we jum to the future and the restored guitar is shown again. how the music swells. absolutely magical#sinners

can't stop thinking about how Remmick had a black eye after fleeing the Choctaw vampire hunters. Forget stakes and holy water and garlic; they were just straight up beating his ass
