as someone who is a recent Melanie Martinez fan, I just want to share this little opinion I have. 

IF YOU AUTOMATICALLY ASSUME MELANIE MARTINEZ IS A RAPIST, FUCK YOU.

It’s absolutely normal to believe Timothy. I’m in no way saying that Mel could not have possibly raped her.

However, if you take to tumblr to publicly not only talk shit about her but also those who support her still, you’re a fucking retard.

I don’t usually call people that, but oh my god, I’m so angry.

If we’re going to take to social media to talk about how women CAN be rapists, we should also probably point out another overlooked minority. Women CAN lie about rape. 

As someone who has experienced sexual assault myself, (not rape specifically, but sexual assault nonetheless) I find it necessary to talk about this because so many other tumblr users are super quick to defend their position by saying that as victims themselves, they believe Timothy because they’ve been there before. 

Guess what tumblr, here’s another victim speaking out. 

In case you haven’t caught it

I stand with Melanie Martinez.

While all of you take the stance that this is a big deal because the amount of women who are rapists is so minimal that once someone is “outed” as being one you assume it’s true, I once again point out that while I agree with your claims that not only men can be perpetrators, I must point out the fact that you cannot blindly support women for being women, as some will lie.

Shitty people of both genders exist. 

Especially in this time of action against sexual harassment by famous people being so prevalent, it’s easier than ever to forge a rape. 

When so many women are speaking out, no one’s questioning them.

So hypothetically, if a woman like Timothy were to speak out, she would quickly gain a lot of coverage, boosting her social status while very few people would even bat an eyelash at such an accusation.

And one more thing to point out. In Melanie’s response we see a statement that reads “she never said no to what we chose to do together.”

A lot of people are reading that as an admittance of guilt on Melanie’s behalf. But there are a couple things that I’d like to point out.

First of all, and honestly most frustrating, no one is taking into account the fact that this easily may just be poor wording on her part. This is E N T I R E L Y possible and completely plausible, so shut the fuck up about it.

Secondly, we are given no time period for this accusation meaning this may have taken place a long time ago. Why is this important? If this was a while ago, and Timothy did not say no, but she also never specifically consented, this easily could have been years ago when we had not been as universally educated on rape and what is and what isn’t. 

Am I saying that by Timothy possibly not having consented, that it was a different time and is inexcusable and okay?

No.

What I am saying however, is though such a situation would be just as illegal, it is not however, and tumblr get your best rants and hate speech and general poorly worded death threats by people whose job it is to be professionally offended, as immoral.

Because in such a situation, this very very easily could be defined as a miscommunication between the two. 

I’m not saying that could make the experience any less traumatic for Timothy, but that SHOULD change the conversation on Melanie. If they had sex and Melanie wasn’t directly told no, this easily could bypass any red flags, and while still being illegal, is not nearly as terribly immoral to do to someone if actually occurring out of pure ignorance.

If I had seen more support for Melanie on Tumblr, I probably wouldn’t have felt the need to do all this. But I’m just so angry because I’ve seen the ugly side of women who use their voice to self-victimize for attention, and this could be one of those cases, so FAIR REPRESENTATION is key here. 

To anyone who has been affected by sexual violence and this story in turn, my thoughts go out to you. I know what it’s like, having been assaulted at 12, and I hope you’re doing wonderful.

To anyone who does believe Timothy, theoretically, keep doing what you’re doing. You can support her. You can believe her. All I ask is you keep an open mind. We have received very little information, and all I ask is that you don’t take only two testimonies and use that to spam Melanie with such hate.

And to Timothy, if the accusations do turn out to be true, know that I support you. For the time being, I’m taking Mel’s side. But absolutely understand that if I am proven wrong, I will change my mind.
