It’s Kitty Tip Tuesday. Can you dig it?

But no, seriously.  If your cat is roughing up your houseplants, read on for tips to stop the madness.  

No doubt you know that kitties can be busy and they can keep YOU busy, as well. Sometimes their habits are hilarious and endearing. Other times, they can be downright frustrating. If you’re feeling challenged by a cat who likes to excavate, read on for some helpful and super simple tips.

Dig Deep

First of all, take a deep breath. It’s all going to be okay. You are the master of your domain. HAHAHA! Just kidding. We all know who’s in charge. 

But you do have thumbs. And that’s something.   

Which means that you can move things around and control the environment. How cool is that?!  GO YOU!

Safety First 

You probably already know this but your cats should NEVER be allowed to chew on or eat any houseplants because many are poisonous or are simply difficult to digest. For some great information on poisonous plants to avoid altogether, please click here. It’s great knowledge to have to keep your pets safe and your vet bills at a minimum. Your plants will thank you, too!

Putting a stop to the digging...

If you have (safe!) plants in your home and your kitty is digging in them, DO THIS:  place smooth river stones (large ones, not pebbles) on top of the dirt. This is an attractive, affordable, easy, and effective deterrent to digging and it will also prevent cats from using your plant dirt as an oh-so-tempting litter box. #winning

And what about the snacking?

If your cat enjoys chewing on your plants, please go back to that link from before (okay, here it is again) and be very aware of which houseplants are dangerous. Learning as much as you can about your plants can save you and your cat lots of time, trouble, and heartache. 

If your cat insists on chewing your plants, the most obvious choice is to move them out of her reach using strategically placed stands, hanging them, or by putting them in their own space away from the reach of your cat. 

For hanging plants, you can simply trim them so they don’t provide tempting tendrils dangling within your cat’s reach. 

You can also spray the leaves of your plants with something like Bitter Apple spray for cats which is harmless to pets and plants but can be a successful deterrent for most hungry and curious kitties.

Cat Grass 

As a safe alternative, you may want to consider providing your cat with healthy cat grass to chew on so that she is not as likely to be interested in other plants. Easy to grow, or found pre-grown at pet supply stores, wheat grass and other approved grasses are very attractive for many cats. Here is an example.

Play Therapy

If your cat is still chewing on or digging in your plants or acting out in other ways, please consider that she may be doing so because she’s bored. Be sure to play with your kitty at least twice a day using interactive cat toys, making sure that you do so for at least 15 minutes at a time. 

If the chewing occurs while you’re gone at work, make sure to get in a session before you leave and then again before you head to bed if it happens while you’re sleeping. For more information, see our Play Therapy page. 

While You’re Away

Leave safe (not string or feather) toys out for your feline. Think catnip mice and trackball and scratcher toys. Try setting up a cat tree or hammock in a nice windowsill where she can kick back and enjoy nature and plot revenge on the squawking birds, getting a bird feeder to attract them to distract her if you can. The idea is to provide safe entertainment for her while you are gone so that she doesn’t go around seeking mischievous ways to entertain herself. 

Once more for the cheap seats...

Please keep in mind that some plants can kill your cat with only a nibble so practice safety first and take no chances. If your cat shows any interest in such highly toxic plants, remove them from her reach.

Signs of plant poisoning can include excessive salivation, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, breathing difficulty, fever, abdominal pain, depression, collapse, trembling, irregular heartbeat, mouth and throat ulcers. Such symptoms can quickly advance to convulsions, coma, cardiac arrest, and even death. Of course, treatment for poisoning depends on the plant, so be sure to contact your vet immediately and know your plants!

Haaave you met Cole + Essie?

Could these two handsome fellas be your dream cats? 

Let’s find out!  Here’s a little more about each of them. 

Cole the Curious 

Cole is the epitome of a curious cat. He loves to explore closets, new toys, windows, and high spaces. He enjoys playing but also loves to slow down and snuggle in your lap. He is not afraid meet new friends either. The only thing that seems to make him nervous is ceiling fans. He keeps a close eye on them to make sure they stay on the ceiling where they belong! He is also not fond of other cats (except Essie!). But he is excellent at supervising litter box cleanings to make sure all is in order. Cole enjoys helping Essie loosen up and have fun playing with toys.  

As you can see, he’s always ready for his closeup in a nearly perfect tuxedo and a dashing, glorious white mustache. 

Secret Agent Essie

Though it takes a little time for Essie to warm up, this good boy’s lovins are SO worth the wait. Once he gets to know you, he’s more than happy to join you on the couch for a Netflix binge. He also adores treats and you will hear the sweet sound of his voice the most when he’s putting in his daily meal requests. 

Sweet Essie relies heavily on his buddy Cole to explore new spaces first and prefers to follow his lead. Because if this, he seems to always be on a secret mission, taking notes about his surroundings and enjoying the view from the periphery at first. He prefers to have a safe space for periodic retreats during the day.  

With the softest white tummy and the sweetest little face, this kind orange gentleman has plenty of love to give. 

Both of these incredibly handsome young men are around 4.5 years old. Because they adore one another and bring out the best in each other, they are in search of a home where they can remain together in a home where they can be the only pets.

Kitty Tip Tuesday Hot Topic: Cerebellar Hypoplasia.

It's Kitty Tip Tuesday and we're using it to talk about something that's often misunderstood. No, we're not diving into why your cat might like to make out with your dirtiest, stinkiest socks. That's a (weird) topic for another day. Cats are weird. 

Today we're talking Cerebellar Hypoplasia (aka CH)! 

Cerebellar Hypoplasia (CH for short) may be misunderstood but we’re hopeful that we can help dispel any myths or confusion for you starting with what it is.

What in the world is cerebellar hypoplasia? 

In a nutshell, CH is simply the underdevelopment of a cat's cerebellum, the part of the brain responsible for balance and coordination. That’s why cats with CH typically present with motor coordination issues which may be mild to quite profound. You can read on to learn about symptoms, personality, life span, and other fun stuff.

Here are some frequently asked questions about CH and some answers to go along with them. 

Is cerebellar hypoplasia (aka CH) contagious? 

No. Cerebellar hypoplasia is NOT contagious. 

So, what causes cerebellar hypoplasia?  

While symptoms might not be noticed until a kitten matures and begins to walk and attempt to explore his surroundings, CH is something a kitten is born with - an underdeveloped cerebellum which, as we mentioned above, is responsible for motor skills. The main reasons CH might appear in a kitten are prenatal trauma or exposure to a virus. Typically, CH is contracted in-utero when a mother cat has distemper (panleukopenia virus) while pregnant with kittens. It can also occur if malnutrition occurs while a kitten is still in the womb. 

JD and Turk sure know how to relax. 

Will it get better ... or worse?

You’ll be happy to know that CH is NOT a progressive condition and it does not worsen with age. And while the condition itself does not improve, some cats with CH may improve their coping skills as they grow and are better able to maneuver themselves. This is seen most often with maturity as they improve their strength and personal coping strategies.

But JD is a BOSS at it. No stress here. 

Is a cat with CH unhappy, dizzy, or in pain? 

That’s a great question! While every cat is different, the answer is typically an overwhelming NO on all counts. They simply have issues with coordination which can occasionally be frustrating BUT cats tend to be way better at managing stress than we are if you haven’t noticed. 

It breaks our hearts to know that many cats with cerebellar hypoplasia are euthanized due to a lack of understanding about the condition. Many people mistakenly think a CH cat is in pain, dizzy, or unhappy but that’s generally not the case. While it presents some challenges to learning how to do things and they may need to do things a bit differently, cats are incredibly resilient and can learn to get around very well given time and encouragement.

Of course, an excellent veterinarian who has experience with the condition will be your best help in determining each cat’s needs and limitations so please seek one out if you’re in need. Veterinarians, like doctors, aren’t all the same and you’ll want to find one with knowledge that is tailored to your cat’s needs.

Do they have a shorter life span? 

What we’ve learned and experienced with the help of amazing veterinarians is that these cats have a normal life expectancy and are very affectionate, sweet, and loving. 

Are they like other cats?

They are, by all other measures, typical cats with different personalities. Some are silly and love to chase toys and red dots and then some are more serious, preferring a lap to warm. Thank goodness that no two kitties are alike and that goes for cats with CH, as well.

Do they require special care? 

Maybe. Maybe not so much. 

The level of care needed will really depend on the severity of their condition. Care can be quite simple or more intensive and you should carefully consider how much you are willing and able to accommodate before caring for a cat with CH. 

Of course, you will need to make sure that they are spayed or neutered and vaccinated just like any other kitty. Due to their delicate nature, you will also want to keep them indoors and never declaw them. Other than that, consider the following: 

Safety Measures

You should be aware that more accidents can happen due to their “clumsy” nature. Therefore, carpeting is a preferred surface as it makes for a softer (read: safer) landing. Generally, homes without steps or the use of baby gates may be necessary, depending on the severity of the cat's condition and their ability to navigate. You can add bumpers to make sharp corners and furniture less treacherous for cats with more severe cases of CH.

Bathroom Talk

Yes, those accidents can happen anywhere. Depending on severity, you may also need to experiment with finding the right litter box for your CH kitty. We’ve found that litter boxes with high sides and a low entry point have been extremely successful as they enable the cat to enter with more ease and then to use the high sides to brace herself while she eliminates. Of course, accidents may happen when a kitty has trouble getting all the way into the box or when they stumble into a mess; therefore, occasional or even frequent baths may be necessary and cleanliness shaves may be required for cats with longer hair. It’s a great idea to make sure kittens with CH get used to water so that bathing as an adult is not traumatic -- for you or the cat. 

Dinner Time

We recommend raised food and water dishes (we quite like Poughkeepsie Polish Pottery and Classy Cat dishes but options abound!) as well as watching to ensure that they are getting all the food they need at each feeding. Depending on the cat, you may have to help with dinner time but it’s honestly a great bonus bonding time! 

What are some symptoms of cerebellar hypoplasia?

While not all cats with CH will present all of these, we’ve listed below some of the most common symptoms to look for.

-High stepping, "bicycle gait", prancing style of walking, or walking loudly 

-Lack of balance and/or falling over for no visible reason

-Eating with a “pecking” motion

-Tremors, particularly when focusing on something or “hunting” bugs

-Jerky movements, lack of “grace”

-Difficulty climbing stairs and/or jumping up

-Overall wobbly nature

-Some with profound CH may have trouble walking more than a few steps before falling

IT’S THE TWELFTH DAY OF  CATMAS!!!

And your true loves just might be Andrew and Lily!

Or Lily and Andrew depending on who you ask. 

These adorable, energetic siblings quite enjoy chasing imaginary mice across the floor and pouncing on one another in the friendly way that only close siblings can really get a way with.

However, both also play very well with others including children, cats, and dogs -- whose food they may or may not have designs on stealing. 

They are not exactly the pickiest of eaters.

Andrew and Lily were a bit shy when they first came to Tenth Life and were very much used to living outside with a feral family. However, they’ve grown in confidence by great leaps and bounds in the time they’ve spent with their foster family. Brave and intelligent, these two are no longer afraid of strangers and even allow their foster family some petting rights.

Sometimes, they even purr about it!

Still, these two are in search of a patient and loving human who’ll allow them plenty of time (and treats) to come around in a new environment.

MERRY CATMAS EVE!

It’s CATMAS DAY ELEVEN OF TWELVE and Zara’s here to help you celebrate!!

JUST LOOK AT THAT FACE!!!

So wise. 

So gorgeous. 

So CATMAS!

A talkative kitty, Zara is happy to entertain you every day with lots of chirping, purrs, and mews. She really adores playtime and toys as well as time spent wrestling around playfully with her feline foster sister. However, she also fares well on her own. In fact, when she is the only kitty around, she’s even more loving with her human friends. 

ALSO? THAT BELLY. 

THAT. BELLEH!

DID YOU SEE THAT GLORIOUS TUM TUM? 

Sadly, Zara was turned outside by her previous family. As a declawed kitty, life on the streets was particularly rough and she had a very hard time finding food. Luckily, she was brought to Tenth Life after only a short time on her own and we were able to nurse her back to health. 

During her time on the streets, she learned a ton. Most importantly, she learned is that she is EXTREMELY allergic to fleas. We were able to quickly and completely rid her of the pesky parasites but she was treated for major symptoms for quite some time. 

Thankfully, Zara is now doing very, very well. Though, she does eat special food and caution must be used to ensure she does not ever come into contact with fleas.

IT’S CATMAS DAY TEN!

AND NO CAT SCREAMS CATMAS QUITE LIKE TINSEL.

LET TINSEL BRIGHTEN UP YOUR EVERY DAY. 

This happy, playful, girl is oh-so loving and is overflowing with tenacity and  personality! 

Her faves: Fleece blankies. Hitting the snooze button in her favorite chair. Track-ball toys. THA LAZER!!!! Oh, and food. Any food. Just food, plz. 

What makes her special? Did we mention her personality? While Tinsel takes a hot minute to warm up to other kitties, she is swift to warm to humans. She’s also never had any reaction to the large dogs who reside with her in her foster home. And unlike most kitties, she does NOT mind having her claws clipped. 

Is she even real? 

When we first learned about Tinsel, all we knew is that she was living outside with a substantial tail injury. While the injuries did not cause any mobility issues, it was clear she was in a great deal of pain and we had to step in to help her. 

Due to the location of the break, Tinsel’s nerves were damaged and those that control her bladder and bowels were effected.  Therefore, she needs help relieving herself. Twice a day, her foster mom manually expresses her bladder and bowels for her. She is expressed over the toilet and wiped with a tissue. The whole process takes just one minute and is SO EASY to learn. Tinsel does not mind at all and rarely puts up a fuss.  

She’s such a good girl.  

Sometimes, she'll go to the litter box and dig a hole in the litter and stand there because she knows that’s the way it should be.

Beyond that, Tinsel simply receives a medicine in capsule form twice a day to help keep things moving in the right direction.  She doesn’t mind a bit and the pills are simple to administer.

MARIPOSA’S YOUR GAL FOR CATMAS DAY NINE!

Say hello to sweet Mariposa.

As a stray rescue prioritizing cats with special needs and injuries, so many of our happy ending stories feature kitties who have overcome physical obstacles. Mariposa's transformation, however, is a different kind of triumph.

Years ago now, our friends at City of Saint Louis Animal Care and Control were called to help two abandoned dogs on a vacant property. In addition to the dogs, the officers discovered something even more disturbing. Fire had struck the home, and after the humans had evacuated, the property's owner had boarded up the home and abandoned it... with five cats trapped inside!!! 

Understandably, the cats were severely traumatized by this time alone in a vacant home where they’d been left with no food, water, or human attention. Animal care officers worked diligently to rescue all of the cats from the dangerous building and then reached out to local rescue groups for placement of the cats.

Thankfully, we had room to take two of the terrified kitties and Mariposa is one of those cats. Mariposa has since had multiple fosters and their families and friends working intensively with her to rehabilitate her, reassure her that humans can be trusted and even loved, and to help her feel more relaxed and secure. We're amazed by the progress she shows in these photos which were just a month apart following her arrival and time spent with her first foster, Heidi.  

What a difference a single month of love and patience can make!

With plenty of time and patience since, this beautiful lady now seeks out the attention of her human friends. While she remains somewhat guarded, we're delighted to report that she's progressed from being a cat who was fully unable to accept attention from humans into a more confident kitty who enjoys being petted and accepting cuddles. Of course, snuggle sessions are still on her terms but that just means that when she seeks out your affection. 

IT. FEELS. SPECIAL.

JUST SO VERY SPECIAL.

That’s her with her current foster mama, Kimberly. 

She has come a long way from her previous life as an extremely shy kitty who was unable to accept attention from humans, hiding constantly and wanting no interaction with them. It's been a long road and many people have poured their hearts and souls into getting her here.

Mariposa will still require a home that is calm, patient, and diligent about continuing her socialization but that family will be forever rewarded.

IT’S TENTH LIFE’S ANNUAL TWELVE DAYS OF CATMAS DAY EIGHT!

And with eight you get Rosemary!!!

Rosemary was brought to Tenth Life as a kitten. See?

While Rosie is a tad on the shy side, once she warms up she's incredibly affectionate, seeking plenty of love and attention. 

Her faves:  Chasing the red dot, long meaningful chats, being the center of attention, and NAPS! 

Her Preferences: Though she has adjusted to the two large dogs that live in her foster home, we feel that Rosie may actually do best in a home without other pets. She is very picky about the other cats that she has liked, making friends with only one resident cat. She’d prefer households without  young children and enjoys calm environments. 

Special Traits: Rosie has a special marking in the shape of a heart. She has had a history of struvite crystals which can lead to bladder stones. To help keep the crystals away, Rosemary needs to remain on a special diet, which she eats with great gusto.

It’s the seventh day of CATMAS!

And it’s Wednesday! 

Which means it’s time for you to meet WEDNESDAY!

No, not THAT WEDNESDAY.  This Wednesday... 

When she’s not gazing through windows in search of birds and just generally appreciating nature/contemplating our existence, Wednesday is quite the curious adventurer who adores exploring every nook and cranny of her surroundings. She wants to know it all and really soak up this life!

Humans are her favorite and she especially loves sleeping in something they call ‘LAPS’. Sorry this isn’t a photo of that but you KNOW what a lap looks like, right? Right. Imagine your lap here. 

Like Wednesday Addams, she can show a smidge of sass if she feels threatened and generally prefers to avoid the smaller humans because they make her nervous. But give this gal a modicum of attention and she may just follow you around like a puppy begging for a treat!

In her foster home, Wednesday was initially cautious of the resident pets but she has adapted very well to living with dogs and cats, alike.

IT’S THE SIXTH DAY OF CATMAS! And your true love may just be Ablie!

She doesn’t have any Geese-A-Laying for you but she has personality for days. 

This gorgeous, happy gal was found as a two day-old kitten who needed to be bottle fed. We made sure she thrived and taught her everything she knows. And boy, does she know so much! 

Like how to make you love her from the word GO! 

Albie has been waiting far too long for her forever family. We know they’re out there and just might be the luckiest folks around if they only found her. Could it be you or someone you know? Read on to learn a little more about this precocious purr machine. 

Likes: Attention. Snuggling. Fleece blankies. Playing. Toys. Heights. Her feline and canine housemates and chasing the red dot.

Dislikes: Eating any food other than her prescription food because it makes her tummy hurt and could cause a great deal of pain. 

Special Traits: She’s so small and sassy and gentle! Weighing in at only six to seven pounds, she is basically a perma-kitten and is as feisty as they come. She’s also constantly purring and oh so playful.

On the fifth day of CATMAS, TENTH LIFE gave to me...

A JASPER IN A CAT TREE!

Okay, so none of these photos are ACTUALLY in a cat tree but they COULD BE and you get it. You GET IT. 

This dapper gentleman is Jasper. 

He was found living outside and malnourished alongside some feral pals. As the local TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) volunteers were preparing to get them all the care that they needed, it was immediately clear that one of these things was not like the other. Rather than showing typical feral, scaredy-cat qualities, Jasper immediately approached the volunteer and began to lick the her hand! He wanted to make it quite clear that he doesn’t have feral bone in his body.

Love Language: Quality Time

Enjoys:  Quiet, relaxing nights at home. Smooches. Cozying up next to humans on a couch. Chasing furry mice and wand toys. Chilling with his feline cat buds. Long talks over dinner followed by some heavy petting.

IT’S TENTH LIFE’S 12 DAYS OF CATMAS — DAY FOUR!

And on day four we submit to you another spry senior — our dear, sweet Agnes! 

Sporting a fancy shmancy coat and some of the brightest eyes around, it’s clear that age has had little effect on this gorgeous gal. But what really impresses us most is her engaging personality and sense of humor because this looker is the life of the party once you gain her trust. 

An attention-seeker by nature, affectionate Agnes enjoys nothing more than anything is smooshing her floofy face directly into yours as if attempting to become one with you.  A firm believer in the benefits of a good play session, she’s also just as fond of time spent lounging about. In fact, gazing through a warm window from the comfort of a cozy bed is her favorite sport of all. 

Agnes is in keeping with the #Catmas tradition of sharing with you our toothless muppet cats but that doesn’t stop her from eating her canned food dinners with aplomb. She's another kitty who wants to be your one and only and would really thrive as a single cat in a calm, relaxed home with someone who is loving, gentle, and patient. This gentle fellow is 17 years young and adores exploring and napping on window sills like all the young kittens are doing these days.

While he’s not terribly fond of lounging in laps, he’s always eager to nuzzle up next to one on the sofa to partake in a good Netflix binge but prepare to share your pillow at night because this guy loves to cuddle.

Although Taun Taun has a heart murmur for which he takes medication, he’s still a mighty spry senior citizen. He arrived at Tenth Life without his is front claws and would do best in a home where he can be the only cat and the apple of your eye, crossed or otherwise.

IT’S  TWELVE DAYS OF CATMAS — DAY TWO!

The ol’ Catmas season is in full swing and we want to introduce you to VERA!

Vera is a professional head bonker and doles out eskimo kisses with the best of them. Her favorite past times include chasing after feathers and fishies. She also enjoys hiding her favorite mice in special spots and then romping off to “catch” them on her own. She’s an incredibly fun and easygoing gal who's happily enjoying the good life now that she’s been rescued.

Oh, and Vera is a true champion if we ever did meet one. 

Before her arrival at Tenth Life, this sweet four-year-old had had a rough go. During her years on the mean streets, she was hit by a car, shot with BBs, and has also lost all of her teeth due to stomatitis.

You might think someone who’s faced so much adversity may not be willing or able to trust people but that’s not how Vera rolls. She has remained trusting and warms to people very well once she gets to know them. In fact, she runs to greet her foster mom and adores nothing more than cuddling up for a nap while having her ears scratched.

As for special needs (it’s kinda what we do!), Vera has been diagnosed with inflammatory bowel disease. Thankfully, her condition is under excellent control with the help of a prescription food and a very low dose of prednisone. She currently only takes half a pill once a week which she laps up in her canned food with no problem.

This sweet girl wants nothing more than most of us do 

— to feel safe and loved by a family she can call her own. We will say, though, that she's not big on sharing her humans with other kitties and would prefer to rule the roost as an only child. IT’S 12 DAYS OF CATMAS DAY ONE!

‘Tis the season to be meowy? No good? Okay. Sorry. 

At any rate, are you ready for twelve days of cuteness? 

Prepare your hearts because we'll be highlighting some of our most special kitties who happen to be lookin' for love (and forever families) this holiday season. Read their stories and scroll to the bottom for daily offers. 

Without further ado, our first featured kitty is petite and sweet FANTASIA and here's her story...

On a summer day in 2015, a compassionate social worker was guiding a team of her volunteers to distribute food amongst the homeless in downtown St. Louis. As they were working, the social worker noticed a woman carrying a bucket with two tiny kittens tucked inside. When she inquired about the kittens' mother, the kind woman suggested that she may have been hit by a car and explained that she was keeping the kittens in the safest place she had available to her — a bucket — and was caring for them as well as she could. Knowing that these babies would become increasingly difficult to care for and recognizing that they needed medical attention for their infected eyes, together they worked to get them to a better place which is how they landed safely here at Tenth Life.

Even as tiny kittens, Fantasia and her brother, Bastian, had the hearts of fearless explorers and followed their foster mom around the house like little ducklings. It was no surprise to any of us that the pair found a home together almost immediately. Unfortunately, in January of this year, Fantasia was returned to Tenth Life due to no fault of her own.

Fantasia is the perfect lap cat and an accomplished cuddle buddy. 

She sleeps all smooshed right up against her foster mommy every night and always allows her to rest peacefully (and even sleep in!) until she formally decides to get up.

Fantasia experienced some medical issues last year including stomatitis which led to the removal of all of her teeth but that doesn’t stop her from enjoying food. She also adores a good game of fetch, returning the mice to you each time in her adorable toothless lil’ muppet mouth.

It was also discovered that Fantasia has an inflammatory disease that affects her skin and digestive system. Thankfully, her condition is easily well-managed. At this time, the only special care that Fantasia requires is a strict prescription diet of Royal Canin HP, an oral medication (Atopica) two times a week — and lots of cuddles!

Fantasia would really prefer to be the only kitty in the home and she has more than enough love to give; however, she may do okay with another mellow friend. Otherwise, she would easily adapt to any size of family or home.
