When you read the synopsis it's like "Repression and lack of autonomy makes this woman snap", which is great. When you watch the movie it's like "oh yeah also she really really likes killing things, she skewers small animals on pitchforks. Also the catalyst that makes the violence skyrocket is a man external to her family approaching her and showing her Perverse Pictures tm and putting phrases in her head", which is very not great.

Maybe its because I watched it pretty much right after another much more fun movie, but Pearl really wasn't all that. For a moment it made me understand the people who avoid horror movies by default for the reason that a lot of them revolve around "wow look at the sanctity of the family/traditional home being violated by external forces of evil corruption" and that has soured them to the whole genre.
