having both pairs of eyes on him makes his anxiety tick even higher. mike wasn't completely sure that was even possible , but sure enough ... why the fuck was sam asking him ?? hadn't he made it blatantly obvious that his judgment was absolute shit most of the time ?? and kaitlyn had been the one in charge the last time things had gone to hell , not him. mike had been more than happy to follow her lead , it shifting only momentarily when he'd gone with laura and ryan but even then , mike had followed. given his input , complained , tried to contribute , but he'd had a singular goal ; protect kaitlyn. everything else had been secondary , a bonus. his own life , his limbs ?? not important. everyone else at camp ?? not as important as her ...
it's all fucking different now. it's protect kaitlyn , but he doesn't want to lose anyone else. not even goddamn emily , or matt ... he wants to kick josh's ass , wants to punch something until his knuckles bleed. he doesn't want to be the one in charge , he doesn't want to make the decisions. mike doesn't want his friends out there , scattered to the wind and able to be picked off like fucking pawns in chess. he wants to snap his fingers and have everyone be here. to hunker down in the basement until dawn. until the storm clears and they can call for help. he wants ---
hands rake roughly through his hair , messing it up further as his stomach churns. he stalks towards the front door , spotting the fresh boot prints leading away from the lodge and swears loudly ; ' mother fucking goddamn shit !! ' then , lower , almost as if he's speaking solely to himself ; ' I'm gonna kill him , I'm actually gonna fucking ... ' he stops abruptly , and for no reason that he can rationalize ... for a second , for just the shortest goddamn moment he thought ... beth. in his mind's eye , surely ... because it's not like she could be there ... arms crossed , dressed like he'd seen her last , gaze deadpanned ; you got yourself into this mess , dumbass ...
okay , yeah ... he's losing it. like officially. shaking his head lightly to clear it , mike glances back towards sam and kaitlyn , noticeably paler than he'd been mere moments before. ' yeah ... yeah , we gotta go after her ... ' he manages , jaw clenching so tight it's a wonder his teeth don't shatter.
" so much for sticking together, " kaitlyn grouses, unable to bite her tongue. hadn't they argued enough about it at this point to make it clear that they shouldn't be separating? but then mike presents the possibility of josh's involvement in ashley's sudden disappearance, and kaitlyn drops her gaze, feeling a small drop of guilt.
" i don't know, " sam answers, attention turned to mike as her hands land on her hips. " if this was josh, wouldn't we have heard something? "
" not necessarily, " kaitlyn counters, trying to fight off the bitterness with little success. " doesn't seem like he has a problem with knocking a girl out. " maybe he'd learned from his scuffle with kaitlyn. but is he really stealthy enough to manage that with the three of them so close?
sam's gaze shifts to kaitlyn and she nods slowly. " we have to go after her, right? " uncertainty paints itself across her features as she turns back to mike. " it could be a trap. " the very possibility makes her stomach churn. " i'm gonna level with you here, mike ... i don't know what to do here. i don't know what josh is capable of anymore. " sick or not, he's not the person she'd thought he was.

mike doesn't even bother to refute her , they both know kaitlyn is simply grasping at straws for the sake of arguing , but mike will let her have the final word. her next questioning words are enough to sufficiently shift his focus , regardless. do they stay ?? beacon hills doesn't seem like a terrible town --- at least , not until you know about this supernatural element ... and unfortunately , there's no putting that particular cat back in it's bag. on the one hand , mike's tired of running ... he'd ran from blackwood pines , from his remaining friends and tired to start over ... then , he'd run from hackett's quarry ... mike had wanted to just keep his head down , do something good for a change ... but he'd ended up with kaitlyn , and by extension , jake ... sometimes it's impossible to look at them without seeing him and jess ... they'd fucked up in a similar fashion , and people had paid the price. mike sure as fuck knows how that feels ... he'd just been even more of an asshole and left everyone --- left jess --- to pick up the pieces of a mess he'd made.
so leaving jake behind isn't an option. mike would never ask kaitlyn to do that , he doesn't want to do it , either. just thinking about jess makes a muscle in his jaw twitch and he has to drag himself back to the here and now. ' I dunno ... ' he murmurs unhelpfully , dragging a hand against his face before facing her fully once more. ' all I fucking know is that I'm with you , kaitlyn. no matter what ... '
a huff pushes past kaitlyn's lips as she rests her head back against the couch. it's easy to put the blame on lydia, but she's just as aware of the other aspects of jake's attachment to this place as mike is. rolling her head to the side, kaitlyn pauses to consider his answer. the coffee had come as a surprise, she'll admit. briefly, she's tempted by a counter argument: that emma probably would have brought jake coffee or treats on occasion. but thinking to provide any for the rest of them? unlikely.
" could've been for some other reason, " kaitlyn mumbles in return, lips pursed. but there's no conviction to the statement, and mike's bound to see right through it. " so what, we just stay here forever? hope that nobody else dies? " judging by everything she's pieced together, this town means trouble more often than not. is that really something they're going to have to just live with?

' agree to disagree ... ' jake says , running a hand over his face. they've always been on vastly different ends of the spectrum , optimism verses pessimism , and it naturally causes some head - butting ... he just wishes she could just try to see things his way every once in awhile ...
leaning back against the counter again , jake's forehead furrows as he listens to her talk. he always has to read between the lines with her , very rarely does she ever come right out and say how she feels --- unless it's something that doesn't require any emotional vulnerability. not on purpose ?? so ... ' is this because she's a banshee ?? ' he asks , head tiltling slightly to the side. ' because I'm a werewolf , katertot ... I think I'm more of a danger to her than the other way around ... '
her eyes lift to meet his, holding his gaze for a long moment. as unbelievable as it may seem, if jake's that determined to get her to believe that nothing had happened, he's probably telling the truth. brows lifting, kaitlyn offers up a resigned nod of acknowledgement and acceptance.
" cynical, realistic. same diff. " she's definitely more cynical than jake is; that's probably why the two of them work as friends. she's able to drag him back to reality and he's able to draw out the emotions that kaitlyn is usually so dead set on smothering. it's only natural, then, that jake would come to a conclusion on what she's not saying.
" no, " she hedges in return, hands settling in her lap. " not on purpose, anyway. " there is the obvious concern that lydia might end up being a little too similar to emma, but at least kaitlyn could deal with that kind of hurt. but the danger and death that it sounds like the mccall pack attract on a regular basis? not so easy. " it's not just her. it's this whole fucking place, jake. "

' pretty sure ... ' jake answers with a soft huff of amusement. he's also pretty sure than none of the things that lydia lists off are fantastical enough to bring his realness into question , but he finds her awe adorable ... ' I mean , I do love a good romcom ... ' he grins , flipping a couple pancakes onto a plate and scooting them lydia's way. ' butter is right there , annnnnd ... ' he steps away for a moment , then returns with a bottle of syrup. ' your syrup , madam ... ' jake presents it with a dramatic flourish , then begins to add more batter onto the griddle.
for a moment, it looks as though lydia might argue; she doesn't feel as though she'd done much of anything to earn a few moments of relaxation. but knowing jake, the sentiment will only be doubled down upon. " okay, " she replies, still a hint of skepticism hidden within her agreement. lydia doesn't move away, though whether that's because she's still convinced she should help or because she simply wants to be near jake is impossible to discern. in the end, the decision comes with its own unexpected reward. lydia's gaze follows the path their hands make to his lips, a mix of curiosity and fondness splashed across her expression. " are you sure you're real? " lydia blurts out, head turned slightly as she appraises him. " you handled our first date extremely well, all things considered, you cook, and you kissed my hand. you're practically right out of a romcom. " and it's clear, despite her evident surprise, that she's not complaining.

' yes ... cross my heart ... ' jake does the motion , neglecting the rest of that particular saying --- and hope to die --- because he's never liked it. far too morbid ... ' we kissed , but that's it. ' he says earnestly , his eyes begging her to actually believe him.
jake's scoff is immediate , and disbelieving. ' right ... ' he says sarcastically , salting the water in the pot as his head shakes almost imperceptivity. her comment about scott gets under his skin , jake has seen enough from scott in the short time of knowing him that speaks volumes. and more importantly , he's seen how loyal his friends are to him. that doesn't just happen , that shit is earned. ' you are extremely cynical ... ' he states the obvious , and a dull ache shoots through his chest. jake knows kaitlyn's been hurt , they all have , but her extreme trust issues never fails to kick him in the teeth. but that's not the crux of the issue , and as he turns back towards kaitlyn , his expression is resigned but empathetic at the same time ... ' you think she's gonna hurt me , don't you ?? '
" really. so you just slept over? " frankly, it's none of kaitlyn's business, but she knows jake, knows that sex and pretty girls tend to make his brain short circuit. and while it's not surprising that he might be capable of an innocent sleepover, lydia doesn't seem like the type to enjoy the same. could she be mistaken in that? maybe. doubtful though; kaitlyn's rarely wrong about anything.
" i don't have a problem with her. or any of them ... except maybe mccall. that boy is way too nice to be real. " that comment will probably ruffle some feathers, but kaitlyn shrugs it off, focuses instead on wiping away an errant crumb from the countertop she's currently perched on. lydia as a person is fine — lydia as a banshee is another topic altogether. kaitlyn doesn't pretend to know everything there is to know about banshees, but she's done enough reading since they'd met everyone to know that they're surrounded by death. death is something kaitlyn doesn't want jake anywhere near. but kaitlyn doesn't know how to articulate that, how to express her concern for him vocally, so she doesn't.

' how many times am I gonna have to say it ?? ' he asks , forehead scrunching , hands splayed out as he looks at kaitlyn. ' we did not have sex on the first date ... ' jake extracts the pot he'd been looking for , the cabinet closing with a resounding thud as he moves to fill it with water and sets it down on the stovetop. after turning the burner on , he leans back against the counter and folds his arms against his chest. ' what's your problem with her anyways ?? you have a stick up your ass where lydia's involved --- well , where all of them are involved , actually --- and they've been nothing but nice ... ' is it particularly surprising ?? no. he's known kaitlyn practically his whole life , and she's pretty much always been like this where new people were involved , but that doesn't mean that jake isn't going to push back on it.

mike remembers when he'd do just about anything to avoid feeling bored. remembers when that lull in the action had made him do stupid and impulsive shit ... most notably , that stupid goddamn prank ... now , it feels like some unreachable dream to just ... breathe. to not be faced with some sort of a crisis approximately every forty - five seconds. but , mike will face it all so long as he can do so by kaitlyn's side. ' sounds nice. unlikely , but nice ... ' he squeezes her hand in return , and even though he's using his unmaimed hand to complete the action , his other one throbs dully.
' that's definitely part of it ... ' he says , but it's certainly not the whole reason. whether kaitlyn wants to admit it or not , jake is obviously making more bonds than just the redheaded banshee. mike may not know jake nearly as well as kaitlyn did , but he'd have to be blind to not notice how jake has already begun to integrate with the beacon hills crowd ... ' she brought us all coffee after that cluster - fuck of a full moon. I wouldn't do that shit for someone I didn't like ... ' then again , mike doesn't really stick his neck out for just anyone anymore ...
" yup. so peaceful and boring that we'll be begging for something interesting to happen. " kaitlyn reaches out to take the hand at his forehead, giving it a squeeze. " but like, normal interesting. you know, neighborhood scandal type shit. " it's a nice, albeit unlikely dream. not for the first time, kaitlyn wonders if their lives are just doomed to be intertwined with the supernatural from here on out.
" what, because of lydia? " her features scrunch slightly, not from any real dislike of lydia (she seems fine), but more because she wonders if that's actually going to go anywhere. leave it to jake to set roots down in a place because of a girl, though. " you think she actually likes him? " it's an honest, curious question, one that she wouldn't have dared ask if she hadn't known for certain that jake was out of the apartment (and thus unable to overhear it). " or is this an emma 2.0 sitch? "

his brows raise as he turns to her , the look of skepticism unable to be suppressed. almost done. it sure as fuck doesn't feel like it ... not when he'd just recently watched jake come home looking like a kicked puppy , not when laura had seriously hurt someone , and some small part of mike can't help but worry about who could be next ... the idea that it could be kaitlyn makes his stomach twist into knots. fingers raise to kneed against his forehead , a breath slowly drawn from his lungs.
' peaceful and boring , huh ?? ' mike likes the sound of it , but he's understandably beginning to wonder if that's even possible ... blackwood pines had turned to chaos , hackett's quarry had as well ... and beacon hills seems to take chaos to a whole new goddamn level. ' I dunno , kaitlyn ... I have my doubts you'll be getting jake out of here any time soon ... '
@terrorsmade said : ❛ i’m tired of running and hiding … and then running again . ❜
running and hiding. it's certainly become a pattern in their lives, one that kaitlyn's not too thrilled about either. she can't remember the last time she'd felt comfortable somewhere; there's always the expectation of being uprooted, of having things go wrong that prevents her from truly being able to settle in. kaitlyn can only imagine how much harder it's been for mike, who's had to deal with the cycle for far longer than she has. as much as she wants to break that cycle for herself, she wants to break it ten times more for him.
" i know. " she grabs the remote, turning the volume on the tv down a few notches before tossing it carelessly aside once more. kaitlyn looks at mike a moment, trying to decide how to proceed. " but we're almost done with it. " her voice sounds much more confident than she actually feels. " we're so close to getting this whole wolf problem figured out. " the voice of doubt is quick to pipe up in the back of her head on that score as well, especially after what had happened during the last full moon. but for mike's sake, she'll try her hand at optimism. " the minute that shit's solved, we dip. and then we can ... you know ... find somewhere peaceful and boring and finally get away from this bullshit. "

' ah ... ' it really is practically the polar opposite of mike's own parents , who don't really care what he does so long as he doesn't get arrested ... his father would just love that , he thinks. having a delinquent for a son would really do wonders for his reputation ... he's more than happy to let the conversation shift , a smirk pulling at the corner of his mouth as he pours his own drink. ' I can use the toaster without setting the place on fire , ' mike jokingly brags , raising his red solo cup and taking a drink of his own. allison's coughing has his expression morphing towards concern , however , brows drawing together. ' shit , sorry ... I'm ... uh ... a little heavy - handed on the booze ... ' he says sheepishly , but huffs a laugh as well as she assures that it's better than wine. mike will take that as a compliment.
' so , the tour ... ' he motions for her to follow , gesturing back towards the crowded room they'd just come from. ' living room , and we were playing truth or dare in the den ... ' words are dismissive , as if neither area provides much interest. moving again , mike walks towards a pair of french doors that lead out onto a large back patio featuring a hot tub , plenty of outdoor seating , and an inground pool a little further out. people flood this space , too , swimming fully clothed and occupying the hot tub in their skivvies. string lights provide the vast majority of the light source here , and shouts ring out from party - goers as they step into view. mike acknowledges them with a wave of his hand , but the majority of his attention remains on allison. ' back yard , ' he explains unnecessarily. ' you'll have to come around sometime when it's just my smaller circle of friends here ... less chaos ... '
her brows lift as she gives a slow nod. " very. " overprotective might actually be an understatement where her dad is concerned. " i don't think they would've even let me out tonight if my aunt kate hadn't given my dad a hard time about it. " allison pauses, wondering briefly if all this talk about her parents is actually making her seem childish, maybe even like a bit of a goody two shoes, too afraid to break some rules. fortunately, mike hands her a drink before she can get too lost in her head. " not much of a cook, then? " she inquires with a smile, eyes settled on him as she raises the cup to her lips. the swig allison takes is a big one, and she's not quite expecting the strength of the alcohol, the distinct burn of the liquid as it makes its way down her throat. allison splutters a little, raising a hand to her mouth as she works to transform the cough into a laugh. " definitely not what i was drinking before, " she jokes, grinning as she clears her throat. " way better than wine, though. "

' mm ... maybe even top three ... ' she murmurs , voice growing more groggy by the minute. truthfully , malia's not even sure she has slept in more than three beds her whole life , so it's not even saying that much but hopefully the sentiment still means something ... her eyes drift closed , and the longest stretch of silence of the night falls between them. part of her wants to fight it , to claw back towards consciousness with all her might --- but that part inevitably succumbs as sleep takes hold , malia's body relaxing further as her breathing becomes deep and even.
eichen house. even the mention of that place leaves his chest feeling heavy. too many of them had been forced to spend time there, and after everything malia had already been through, it pains him to know she'd had to endure that place too. but the idea of speaking on eichen house more is extremely unappealing, especially after the night they've had. " top five, huh? " scott murmurs instead, a smile behind the words. " towards the top, i hope. " it's meant to be a joke, but is it too much? scott shakes the thought from his head, happy to fall silent again. sleep tugs at his eyelids, but he refuses to be the first to drift off. " getting there. " scott readjusts his head on the pillow, narrowly fighting off the urge to burrow his face against her neck.

' overprotective ?? ' he asks , head emerging from the fridge again to glance her way , his nose wrinkled. ' can't relate. ' by the time these words are spoken , he's back to surveying the fridge's contents , and after a few more moments , mike begins to snag some bottles. with a careful bump of his foot , he nudges the doors closed and sets to work mixing allison a drink ... he's far from a trained bartender , however , and is much more accustomed to tailoring his drinks to accommodate for jess and his brand of alcohol tolerance ... which is to say , it's strong. ' not my thing either , but a tour can definitely be arranged ... ' he grins , spreading his arms out to gesture to the room they find themselves in. ' stop one , the rarely used chef's kitchen ... '
foolish though it may be, there's a part of her that misses his hand around hers once he lets her go, and allison has to remind herself that they're virtually strangers. still, keeping that thought in mind doesn't stop the little jolt of excitement as his hand makes contact again, this time at her shoulder. " must be nice, " allison remarks with a quiet, airy laugh. " feels like my parents are always a little reluctant to even let me out of their sight. " she could certainly use a few breaks from her parents from time to time. as they enter the kitchen, allison finds her way to the island, leaning her elbows on it. " i ... " again she laughs, this time more sheepishly. " am actually not sure. i just took what my friend handed me. " definitely not the smartest idea, in retrospect. allison considers his offer for a moment, lips pressed thoughtfully together as she pulls herself to full height again. " surprise me. i don't think wine is really my thing ... i wouldn't mind a tour, though. "

‘high five! touch my hand, (name).’
‘and for the record your analogies are very hurtful.’
‘beep, beep, beep … uh … it’s my beerdar. helps me ‘dar’ for beers.’
‘how am I just noticing how super lame you are?’
‘look if you’re trying to scare me it’s not gonna work.’
‘booty? oh, it means like … um, treasure. or butts.’
‘you’re trying not to laugh right now because it kinda sounds like boner, aren’t you?’
‘your wit knows no bounds.’
‘I knew that there was a secret sex dungeon around here somewhere.’
‘what can I do for you on this darn - tootin’ - doozy of a day?’
‘maybe we should stop touching stuff.’
‘it’s like my mom always said, if you wanna party you’ve gotta bring protection.’
‘I’m not gonna fuck a bear.’
‘I beefed it.’
‘to be fair, bigfoot is not a conspiracy.’
‘whatever happens is what’s meant to happen.’
‘not everyone knows what they’re capable of.’
‘you know I just realized we may never see each other after tonight.’
‘nice! but we’ve already done that joke.’
‘the main party’s not gonna die just because you’re off on a little side quest.’
‘we all get performance anxiety sometimes. you just better make your move before a real man swoops in.’
‘disqualified for being a dumbass.’
‘oh ‘it was just a game!’ yeah, the fuck it was, man!’
‘you never really get to kiss who you really want in these dumb games anyway.’
‘so I’m saying that I like you, too, or whatever.’
‘sneaking down here was a little more fun when we thought we could get caught, huh?’
‘you just love having an audience, huh?’
‘you really love fucking with me, huh?’
‘lighten up, sourpuss, please.’
‘I don’t want this to end.’
‘do I look like a doctor?’
‘are you trying to piss me off?’
‘I’m gonna carpe this diem so damn hard it won’t know what hit it!’
‘I’m just desperate to stay afloat in a world where everyone wants to be different.’
‘time makes fools of us all.’
‘you mean ‘911?’ who says ninety - one - one?’
‘do you have to specifically ask for an ambulance or can you just say ‘help, help!’?’
‘maybe that’s just what they want you to think, man.’
‘why does everyone blame everything on bears?’
‘don’t write a check that your ass can’t cash.’
‘you ran away.’
‘hey … I’m kinda pouring my heart out here.’
‘didn’t think I was that boring.’
‘technology … it giveth and it taketh.’
‘I’m sorry if it’s not up to your standards, okay? but I’ve been putting in a lot of TLC.’
‘well, if you like, I could show you the ropes.’
‘sign me up, teach!’
‘S.O.S. this is an emergency … save our ship … come on down … please help us.’
‘why didn’t you tell me there was something out there?’
‘fuck! it’s spreading!’
‘that was a bad idea.’
‘I’m okay, I mean… I’m not but … it doesn’t hurt.’
‘you’re in shock.’
‘you left me back there you asshole!’
‘you don’t have to be a dick about literally everything.’
‘I’m not going to suddenly fall in love with you because you’re my knight in shining armor.’
‘can we please not do this right now, seriously! I literally came looking for you as soon as I heard there was something out here.’
‘I don’t know what’s going on with you right now but I liked the old (name) better.’
‘I only hung out with you because you seemed so desperate. poor, pathetic (name) willing to throw herself at the first guy who came along.’
‘you don’t like me at all, do you?’
‘we officially suck as counselors.’
‘you just stepped in some grade a, double prime, go ahead and kill yourself, cosmic type shit.’
‘your only option is to buckle the fuck up and do what I say.’
‘I feel like I’m going crazy!’
‘I’m kinda all mixed up but … more or less intact.’
‘watch it man, I bruise easily.’
‘you have nothing to bargain with.’
‘sometimes things just don’t make sense. what then?’
‘you know you can talk to me about anything, right?’
‘I’m just saying, maybe there was a slight chance that it was a werewolf.’
‘that’s not really a plan though, that’s just like saying ‘let’s escape’ but with a bunch more words.’
‘you’re not going to believe it until you see it for yourself.’
‘let’s see how smart you really are.’
‘it wasn’t you. I know it wasn’t you.’
‘we don’t have much time.’
‘please let me go! I didn’t mean for any of this to happen!’
‘this isn’t a ghost story, it’s a creature feature.’
‘wow, are you flirting with me?’
‘how long do you have?’
‘this doesn’t feel right. I think you’re up to something.’
‘why are you like this?’
‘if I let my conscience slow me down now, everything gets a lot worse for everyone.’
‘jesus, mary and jazz hands!’
‘stop being weird.’
‘look whose finding their funny bone!’
‘I don’t fit into the right box, is that what you’re saying?’
‘trauma can bring people together.’
‘just because you’re using ‘logic’ to ‘make sense’ doesn’t mean that I’m into it.’
‘okay, fuck you man! I’m trying to help.’
‘I wish I could take it all back. I wish I could take it all back but I can’t.’
‘nobody’s ever gonna treat me the same.’
‘I guess I just don’t like to see other people sad.’
‘maybe I just like to make people laugh.’
‘well, fuck this night, huh?’
‘you stole my knife!’
‘pick on someone your own size.’
‘how bad is it?’
‘I keep trying to fix it … whatever this is … but people keep getting hurt.’
‘uh, you’re not the boss of me.’
‘am I dying?’
‘you’ve lost a lot of blood.’
‘are we gonna end up in a documentary?’
‘you actually saved my life. for realsies.’
‘I just can’t wait to see who they choose. y’know, to play me … in the movie about how brave I am.’
‘I’m not leaving you!’
‘thanks … for uh … not killing me.’
‘you think this is over? this isn’t over.’
‘why the hell should I trust you?’
‘I’m not asking you to trust me. I’m telling you we can end this.’
‘this doesn’t mean I forgive you for what you did to me.’
‘I wanted to spend one more night with you … you know together … like before.’
‘we’re not good together. we’re just not.’
‘I am sorry. even if it means you’re never gonna talk to me again. I just … I want you to know that.’
‘it’s not long before sunrise. all we have to do it wait it out.’
‘we can still come out on top. the past is the past.’
‘can’t get much worse than it already is.’
‘we have enough on our plates already. stop discovering shit.’
‘you changed me. I will never, ever be the same because of you.’
‘you’re the one who has to live with what he’s done.’
‘what we’ve up against is my only chance to end this thing for good.’
‘god damn this place has got some uncool vibes.’
‘I bet you think you’ve got it all figured out. I bet you think you’re fucking clever.’
‘stop doing a podcast, no one’s listening!’
