This journey - Reflection
This project have been the biggest struggle I've had so far... time management have been really hard in the second part of the semester since having spent most of the mid semester break looking at internships and doing interviews for Summer of Tech had been using up most of my time. The problem for this project for me running out of time to develop a proper design system and branding for this app, the time started to close in so quick after the break that suddenly hand in is around the corner. I would say in the future projects I wished I would have focused more on the project and less on the internships but as this is the final project I highly regret not doing so and yet at the same time I take it as learning lesson. I am not happy about my own performance throughout this project, and I should not make excuses about the output.

Video
vimeo
With the video I made, I wanted to provide context as to what we are currently facing with climate change. It is happening across the world as well as New Zealand with recent events. I want to thank Chalotte for being the actress of this video.
I'm enjoying premiere pro a bit more this time round, the colour correcting is more intuitive and it felt very familiar as it is similar with Lightroom - Adobe being Adobe...

The final build and the final stretch
Component library was the most difficult to make because I kept trying to make the combination to make the app idenitity that could also display the information.

Research
further research for my exegesis and new zealand's goal for reducing carbon emissions to be in line with UN's 17 SDG.

AI Images
Since Using stock images seems to be a "no", I wanted to use AI generated photos - I experimented with a few but DALL-E seems to be the best so far.
Dream - Wombo.art
Dream from Wombo.art is good for being free but DALL-E 2 is next level in photorealism.

Sizing and information
I want the user to be able to compare the two different lasagnas and provide them the incentives and information to choose - provide them the confidence of going for a plant based diet.
One aspect of this design is to provide the the information of how much carbon emissions they are saving in comparison to the meat option.

Researching for more nutrient databases
Very inconsistent across multiple websites
I would be using fatsecret and edamam as a database for food nutrients
This is how the app would be accessing the different amount of data

Design Iterations
Testing the use of illustrations i made from first year
Navbar Icons
I also attempted to make my own nav bar icons using the pen tool in Figma, as this was quite intuitive and adds a personal touch that is unique to my own design. The trouble I had was making it consistent as inconsistencies can be seen from the spacing of the lines as well as the text.
I learnt a lot from making this nav bar by hand. Coming in from previous projects, the component state update to Figma made it so much easier to design around. The difficult part of this was getting the sizing right and the angle of the corners, since working on a tiny scale of 24px, it's very difficult to get the thickness of lines and angles right across all the icons.

Designs based on inputs - needs of the users
Based on the previous feedback I have decided to make it into an app instead of a website and one aspect of this app is to track their protein intake and provide suggestions. Feedback from molly is that there's too much happening and i need to simplify it further and make it more intuitive.
One element of UI design I want to head towards is flat design - which is a trend amongst app design at the moment
one issue is that there's a lack of affordance in which users cannot tell which component and buttons is interactable.

Gathering Feedback & Using Maze
The problem I initially had was designing the home page that would cater to the needs for the people, therefore I asked around to design something that they need, what information they need, what content and what features was required for the user to enable them and for them to feel more confident in reducing their meat consumption within this design.
Using maze was very interesting, although I did not have the prototype ready, I still played around with it to see how it can be used in the future as well as gaining experience with different user testing platforms. Setting up the questions is really important too - not to lead but also needs enough context was rather difficult from my previous projects, this time I tried harder to be more open for the user to provide the feedback and not lead - something i need to improve on.

Being stuck after the onboarding & R2 testing
One of the issues I had was identifying what info the user needs for them to be confident in switching to a plant based diet... I generated a persona based on the interviews that would help inform my design decisions.

But how much protein does the body consume?
Protein metabolism/protein synthesis
These two terms often come up in my research to see how much protein does the average body process. Apart from finding that the body uses up 20-30% of protein calories to digest food, there are many scientific papers that is very complex and goes into nutrition science and health science that I found very hard to decipher due to the scientific terminology and jargons. There were also scientific and mathematic equations that I could not understand.

Researching Protein
How much protein does an average person need in a day?
I discovered that an average person needs 0.8 grams of protein per kg of weight a day. This is an approximate amount and the proteins should be coming from different variety of sources apart from meat, whole grains and nuts etc.
How much Protein is being used?
20-30% of protein calories is used/consumed during the digestion process.
1 gram of protein = 4 calories
Therefore 100g of steak = 5.2-7.8g of protein or 20.8 to 31.2 calories from proteins is used during the digestion.
How much protein does a person need during an activity?
Running
For light running and marathon running there are tools available and calculators that runners can use to calculate how much protein they need. Research shows and suggests that runners should consume 1.1g to 2g protein for running and for short distance running should be half their body weight in grams for proteins.
Marathon runners requires more and starting at 1.2 and increasing it to 1.4 for the heavy workout. It also depends on how the person feels. After exercise and movements, users need to consume 15-30g of protein within an hour timeframe window.
Swimming
Swimming requires more protein than other sports - being at 2g of protein per kg of body weight. It also requires 20% more fat of the daily intake. This is due exertion the body goes through during the activity as well as the protein biosynthesis - one of the processes of the body absorbing the protein.

Concept Dicussion & Feedback
I had a discussion with G and Siobhan about how to bring my concept to the next level based on what I told them about my project so far and what they wanted to incorporate if they were to use my prototype/concept.
There are things I still have to research and to understand more about protein.
And from Siobhan we talked about interacting directly with the proteins - in the sense of digital interaction. I should do more research in the diet and health space in regards to the system between body and protein.
From the discussion I've distilled the information I want to collect.
And based on what have been discussed there are things I still need to research in -
How much protein an average person use up in a day
How much protein does an average person need to consume per day
How much protein does a person use up per activities?
Database on proteins
Information in diet tracking and health
macro and micro nutrients that contribute to energy
What activities is the user doing?
What activities is the user planning?

Carbon tracking
Earth Hero app - for tracking personal carbon footprints. It asks a series of questions to calculate
It also provides a suggestions of steps that can be taken by the user to reduce their carbon footprint which I found quite useful.
There's also a community area for users to connect with and discuss about carbon footprints and how to tackle and reduce their own.

Gathering Facts
This website is really cool for getting information within data within the food industry. It's an open API which is even more impressive and can be made into the app for more accurate facts.
Also gathering facts about how much carbon emissions are being produced within the food industry - agriculture.
CO2 everything
A website that visualizes data about carbon emissions in a volume scale compared to humans.
I initially wanted my project to be heavily incorporating these facts and information about the personal carbon footprint but also water footprint and what kind and how much resources are being used to produce these food.
Dabases for recipes
This is how I imagined the tech behind the app would work which accesses different databases to display the different information for users.
