Quarks are the elementary particles that makes up hadrons such as protons and neutrons
Cool things about quarks:
Quarks come in six flavours (from heaviest to lightest): Up, down, strange, charm, bottom, top.
They have to exist in a hadron. If you have enough energy to pull the quark out of the hadron, you also have enough energy to create a quark/antiquark pair. The quark you just pulled out joins with the anti-quark to form a meson, and the new quark replaces the old quark
Because they have to exist in a hadron, they’re interpreted to have fractional charges. The up quark has a charge of +2/3, the down quark a charge of -1/3
A proton consists of two up quarks and a down quark, giving a charge of 2/3 + 2/3 - 1/3 = +1, while a neutron which consists of two down quarks and an up quark has a charge of -1/3 - 1/3 + 2/3 = 0
Because they interact via the strong force, quarks also have a colour charge of red, green or blue. This does not mean the quark is actually that colour.
The strong force between quarks is carried by a boson (force carrying particle) called a gluon
A hadron has to be colourless. This can either be achieved with one quark of each colour, or a quark and an anti-quark (ie. the antiquark would have a colour charge of anti-color. eg. A red quark and an anti-red quark)
An up quark can be converted to a down quark and vice versa via the weak nuclear force/radioactive decay. This is how protons can turn into neutrons and vice versa.
Actually all the quarks can decay. A top quark decays into a bottom quark which decays into a charm quark which can decay into a strange quark which decays into an up quark
