a rush at the beginning
Tessa is no stranger to messy family dynamics, be it her own or those of her patients. If given the choice, of course she prefers to discuss other people's drama, but there are many times where she's left with no choice at all. Parent/teacher meetings are one of those times -- though this time she's flying solo, which is, frankly, a relief. Tessa loves Jed, still, always, in a certain way. He's the father of her children, and furthermore, he's a good person. He just isn't the person for her, and his tendency to put work above all else is one of the reasons why. It's working in her favor today, because instead of meeting their daughter's new teacher for the year together, Tessa is meeting him on her own. Something came up at work, he tried his hardest to be there today, honestly.
The funny thing is, ex-husband or not, she believes him, and she doesn't resent him. Less charitably, she's happy to have the opportunity to make the better first impression, to have Mr. Han on her side when it comes to issues involving her child. Unfortunately, in matters of divorce, there's always one parent who hears first, and Tessa plans on being that parent.
She settles into a child-sized desk towards the back of the room. All the more desirable seats are already occupied by PTA parents and soccer moms, but Tessa doesn't mind. Being overzealous makes teachers wary and Tessa never wants to come off as a helicopter parent. Considering her profession, school faculty members tend to trust her more, which she doesn't hate. When all the seats are occupied, with chivalrous fathers lining the walls to allow their wives to sit, Mr. Han finally takes his place at the front of the room.
She's struck by him immediately, his smile of greeting eliciting a swooping in her stomach. He's dressed professionally but his button down is form-fitting, something he likely can't avoid. Tessa looks around the room, catching the eye of some of the other mothers doing the same, raising eyebrows at each other and fighting back smiles. Sitting in a classroom, trying not to oogle a hot teacher, makes her feel like she's back in school again. Despite the slight distraction of his appearance, she listens attentively to his prepared speech, making notes of questions she wants to ask when he's done. When the actual Q&A portion starts, she doesn't raise her hand, preferring a more personal approach.
Once he's finished, she mills around the room, inspecting the posters on his classroom walls while other parents crowd him and make smalltalk. It's hard to look busy while she waits for them to leave, but eventually, the last pair of parents say their goodbyes and she walks up to Mr. Han just as they leave the classroom.
"Tessa Sparrow," she offers in greeting, holding out her hand with a smile. "I'm Ariel Brooks's mother." The different last names won't go unnoticed, but they will probably go unmentioned. She had never taken Jed's last name, having already been established in her profession as Doctor Sparrow. She hopes he'll take it the wrong way, though, that she's single. Which she is.
