In music, counterpoint is the relationship between two or more musical lines that are independent melodies, yet harmonically interdependent. Lan Wangji, the principal cellist in his orchestra, finds himself performing JS Bach’s Art of Fugue with a student string quartet one semester, and falls in love with the ways his life intersects with that of the lead violinist. Wei Wuxian, a composition major, finds himself echoing that sentiment, and their story takes on all the complexity and fascination of the very fugues they are learning.
