Haikyuu!! Chapter 266: Cats vs Monkeys
It takes me a while to understand the title until I remember the team Nekoma is facing is Sarukawa, Saru as in Monkey. OMG. How many animal-named teams we’ll encounter in the Nationals? Though admittedly it’s a good cheat, Furudate-sensei will have endless inspiration to take in giving names to the teams.
That said, it’s such a dream come true. I still can’t believe that we’re having more Nekoma-centric chapters. Poor @multifandomsfujoshi bears the brunt of my enthusiasm when I realize the absolute gem this chapter is. We’re yelling quite a lot too XDD.
In this chapter we’ve got more insight into Kenma’s mind and particularly Kenma’s first year. Yes, you read that right, we’re seeing young Nekoma’s second year trio!

Kenma has found his own way to deal with troublesome things (read: physical activity)
Fukunaga speaks!!!… In puns??!!!! And laughs at his own jokes?? That’s… adorable???
Yamamoto is very much like Tanaka. No wonder they get along so well. He doesn’t know how to hold back, either. He also has good self-awareness to know what he does wrong.
Surprisingly, or not, Yamamoto and Kenma get along like cats and dogs, well, I don’t think that’s the best description. They’re just like cats that don’t get along.
That it takes water to stop them from fighting. Seriously, water.
That’s exactly what I do to fighting cats in my neighborhood in order to get them to stop and scramble. It’s the only way I (and Gretta) know, and it makes us laugh out loud at the solution Fukunaga comes up with.
It also kinda surprises me how loud and forceful Kenma can be when he’s annoyed as hell. It looks like a rare occurrence, and whether it’s coincidence or not, Kuroo is likely to be the last person Kenma raised his voice at.
(Kuroo’s face though)
Pfft. It looks like Fukunaga has resorted to having buckets of water around in the case of Kenma and Yamamoto arguing. Honestly, I didn’t expect to find the two second years to be such troublemakers. They’re like Nekoma’s Kageyama and Hinata.
Back to the match!
I must admit I was getting worried. I have no idea what Nekoma’s going to do when they’re obviously targeting Kenma.
When you see Nekomata smile like that you know sh*t’s going down.
OMG. O. M. G.
Kuroo’s just…. Kuroo’s just jumped to cut off the ball’s trajectory?
That’s just… that’s just. WOW.
(lemme just pick my jaw up from the floor)
It’s the second time when Nekoma and their characteristic are mentioned, it is Kuroo who’s shown, not Kenma. Remember this iconic panel?
I think… despite being the brain, Kenma is not the embodiment of Nekoma’s flexibility.
It is Kuroo.
Of all Nekoma players, Kuroo is the most versatile player. He can do both offense and defense. He’s a force to reckon with whether he’s at the front or at the back. In this match, he’s the first to adapt to the situation, showing the rest of the team how to.
This is the kind of captain Kuroo is, he’s the captain who leads by example, by becoming the embodiment of Nekoma. He’s aware of Kenma’s weakness, and instead of forcing him to change, he’s the one who changes to adjust and support the brain of Nekoma.
Honestly, this chapter is such an eye-opener to see what kind of captain Kuroo actually is and why he is the captain.
Yaku is really like Suga, who’s not above stirring up problem himself and finding entertainment in his kouhai’s shenanigans. Kai is similar to Asahi that he’s not a forceful personality, which leaves Kuroo to maintain order in the team. It takes Kuroo leaving for few minutes for the first years get in trouble. It reminds me of that meme where the guy carrying box of pizza only to find the room burning. It looks like Kuroo suffers as much as Daichi.
No wonder why Kuroo’s the obvious choice for captain.
He has the respect of his kouhais even when he’s only second year himself and not the captain yet (and somehow Yamamoto knows how close Kenma is to Kuroo)
Kenma listens to him, which leads to his attempt to talk to Yamamoto, however badly it turns out.
He can be damn scary and observant. Look at the face he’s making as he yells at Kenma, and how the hell he notice that Kenma’s slacking off? No wonder Tsukishima develops so quickly under his tutelage, Kuroo is a good teacher. He’s not laid back at all.
He is in the same wavelength with Nekomata. I don’t think it’s just Nekomata’s thoughts when it happens to show Kuroo’s back.
Things are getting interesting. Looking forward to see what Nekoma comes up with.
