Chaoter 13 Fieldwork
On May 6th, I interviewed a Gambian 47 year old woman. She came to America because she wanted better for her and her family. The President Gambia is “power hungry” and he doesn’t work to actually help his people. Healthcare access was a push factor that influenced her to migrate to America. She wanted to make sure her family has as much access to medication for anything they need. The education system in Gambia was also a factor that pushed her to migrate to America. Teachers in Gambia were abusive and she didn’t want to put her kids through the trauma of schooling in their country. It’s also difficult to get a “good enough paying”job in Gambia, she was barely making enough to get her children’s necessities. This Gambian woman had sisters, brothers, nieces, and nephews that lived in Gambia with her. This was a pull factor that made her hesitate from migrating at first. She had to migrate to make sure that her closest family, sons, and daughters, were safe and taken care of to her best ability. One of the barriers that put a “bump in her road” was the process of getting papers. It took two to three years to get papers for them to migrate. Once they got the papers, she had to send her kids to Americas first, one son and one daughter, for almost a year before she could actually migrate herself. During that year, her daughter got sick and she couldn’t be there with her to take care of her. Part of her wanted to just reunite her family in Gambia, and another part of her was trying to rush and get to her children. The whole process itself was another barrier that got in her way. During this process, she met her husband. He was from New York and they had been communicating for months. He traveled to Maryland to help with her daughter without her mother even being present. This made things easier for her to worry about what she had going on and feeling like her kids were safe. This made the process smooth and gave her more of a “bridge” to help her migrate. Once she migrated, she reunited with her family. She met her future husband and got a well paying job. She was able to realize that her experience was rough but it was all worth it in the end.

Yes, I agree with my group’s rank order. All of our ranks were similar for the most part and after discussing it, we have agreed that do no harm is most important. You shouldn’t harm anyone that is not harming you. We agree that obtaining consent is second in the rank order. Our ideas did not change much after the video. The video actually confirmed our ranks.

After completing this assignment, I have learned that I happen to own more things that I need than things that I want. Most things in my room are necessities. I have also learned how expensive I am when it comes to buying things that I both need and want. I spend at least 60 dollars on things that I need to survive at least every 5 days. I have also realized that some things you may think you need, you actually don’t but they’re good to have. My room is a mix of wants and needs whether I use the items daily or not.

Aquafina has been a best-selling water bottle since 1997. It was introduced in Wichita, Kansas in 1994 and began to be distributed nationally in 1997. Aquafina was conceived by PepsiCo at the purchase headquarters, according to the company’s director of water, Robin Kaminsky. The logo for Aquafina was designed in 2004 and the meaning behind it is the reflection of nature and purity off the snow mountains peak. Aquafina is the number one selling bottle water brand all over the world.
Aquafina was manufactured in Wichita, Kansas by PBNA (PepsiCo Beverages North America). In order for this item to be sold, it has to meet or exceed the requirements that the EPA has set. During the manufacturing of this product, they use tap water sources that are cleaned by the purification process. Based on the hard work of the manufacturers, Aquafina has won over many customers with its taste and how pure it is.
I have been drinking Aquafina since I was younger. It has always gave me a refreshing feeling that I can’t explain. I always tend to finish a pack of Aquafina water in less than two weeks based on how much I drink in a day. This item has been a part of my everyday routine for years. My mother always told me to always have water when I’m outside which caused me to leave my house with a fresh bottle of Aquafina every morning for school. Aquafina has made a great impact on my life by quenching my thirst as refreshing as it may.
The people directly involved with manufacturing and making this item are the workers at the PepsiCo company. They filter the water, create the plastic bottles, and distribute the water into every bottle. After the item is made, they put the bottles into packages and ship them to different stores all over the world. Life for these manufacturers is hard because they are constantly making this product on a daily basis. They have to use their hands and feet to move around the workspace and make the product. At the end of a long day, they are tired and ready to go home and rest their body for the next day. I wouldn’t say life for these manufacturers is bad but it definitely is time consuming and takes a lot of dedication.
