Why would I? I’ve heard plenty of your saccharine lies sway enough women and I’ve seen enough of your necklaces and bracelets adorned on their necks and wrists when you inevitably fall astray — a tell that they always seem to miss the first time, too blinded to notice how cold the metal really is.

Your fingers dance across the Steinway keys, delicately but determined, drumming up a storm to rival Guaraldi with your eyebrows knitted together in concentration until you strike the chord and locate the rhythm that washes your face with total serenity. No patchiness of the Leslie speaker or rambunctious crowd to drown you out, you could just play your jazz and blues. Your glissindos when you played Let The Good Times Roll were only as dazzling as the sparkle in the smile you’d give me when you did them. All the beautiful days and night’ve we’ve shared, all the beautiful places we’ve been… beside you on your piano bench remains my heart’s favorite.

You’re brilliant, Sonny. Truly, magnificently, brilliant — and it’s a shame how you’ve cheapened yourself. The price of your happiness rises with each year, and your bargains haven’t brought you much closer. It’s no way to live. It’s nothing I could live with.

I know you will figure your way out of it eventually, you always seem to get what you want. I hope you do soon. The exhaustion in your eyes is hard to watch, constantly running on steam to manage.
