History of Gladesville, NSW 2111
Gladesville in Australia, is a suburb located in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales. This community is sometimes grouped as a suburb of the Lower North Shore. It was established in 1830, and is home to about 11,827 residents.
The Indigenous Australians were the original inhabitants of the area, before the arrival of the Europeans who came to settle in the area. The dominance of these native Australians was so much that even till date, their presence is still felt in the area.
The area known as Gladesville today, was formerly callled Doody’s Bay. This was as at the time the European settlement started out in the area in 1795, with a land grant being made to convict John Doody who was an artist. Some others like William House, Ann Benson, and Charles Raven also received grants in 1795, 1796, and 1799 respectively.
An emancipist called John Glade in 1836, got the deeds to Doody’s grant, after purchasing the land in 1817. With the purchase of a number of adjoining holdings, Glade was able to expand his property. The land Glade owned was sold after he passed away in 1848. Mr W. Billyard who was a Sydney solicitor acquired the lands, and he subsequently subdivided the land. A portion of the land was sold in November 1855 and it was named Gladesville.
