Crown princess by blood, the deadliest of the sirens was known for her unearthly beauty and thirst for the hunt. The joy she derived from killing resulted in the unprecedented abdication of the crown -- and therefore royal responsibilities -- to the current king. Following the relinquishment she was often seen leading packs of her fellows in vicious attacks and triumphant celebrations, leaving the inter-kingdom chinwagging, entertaining, and glad-handling to the confidante who took on her mantle. The ancestral circlet and dull meetings were a price she gladly paid for the freedom to pursue the joy of the open water and smell of human fear.

While the newly turned prince consort was getting acquainted with his aquatic body, husband, and kingdom, the former ruler happily overpowered his human friend. The loyal companion naively believed that vengeance was owed for the brutal "death" of his peer, practically throwing himself into the water and proceeding to slash and tear into any limb within his reach prior to being overpowered. While the attack proved futile, the princess could always appreciate loyalty and a fierce spirit; regardless of species. Such an essence would have been wasted in death, and perhaps the human-turned-king would benefit from a familiar face.

reading "these feelings won't go away" by haridwar & i GASPED at the almost throwaway 'jake is an ex-smoker who quit because bradley's mum died of lung cancer and that's why he's always got a toothpick in his mouth' headcanon and i LOVE it in the context of exes jake and bradley, where even after they break up, jake still fights off cravings and keeps on gnawing on toothpicks because a part of him KNOWS in his soul that he and bradley will find their way back together.

(and he's right, they do).

I've been a bit quiet. Working on my Big Bang instead of the smaller fics, plus I had a job interview two weeks ago (and start the new job on Monday - it's a promotion and A LOT more work and responsibility). All while both my kids and husband are sick. And I have now caught it.

This is life. And I'm in love with you... I think that's the only thing I've ever really been sure of in my entire life. And I'm really messed up right now, and I got a whole lot of stuff I have to work out, but I don't want to waste any more of my life without you in it. And I think I can do this. I mean, I want to. I have to, right?

not enough people realize how much beau actually cared about the pilots.

he just showed it in subtle, barely noticeable ways. ways that kept his armor from cracking. ways that would keep most from noticing. but they are noticeable, if you care enough to pay attention.

it’s all in the wordplay, micro-expressions, and sometimes tone of voice.

yeah, at first we get the “this mission needs to succeed” beau. but i assure you, the “these pilots need to survive” beau comes out eventually. in fact, my first example is when he pulls maverick into his office, after he pulled that surprise/unscheduled training move (whatever you’d call it) and beau questions whether he should discharge him or promote him. yeah, in that scene, after going “so what do i do?” he follows with—verbatim, first thing: “risk the lives of my pilots” and only when he brings up the mission, he begins with “perhaps” and only an illiterate being would be unable to hear the weight of that sentence alone. not only does he call them HIS pilots, but he very clearly implies his concern for them. people gloss over that so much and i’m sick of it. it screams ignorance and illiteracy.

another example is what he says to everyone before the mission, on the carrier. he warns “come home safely.” and while it’s small, it does say more than you think. he didn’t have to say that, but he did.

my next example, following that, are the snippets in the tower, during the uranium mission. of course, he starts out focused. but when maverick goes down, is when shit gets serious. pay the most attention to his facial expressions in these. but also, there are lines that, if you consider the words, you’ll realize he meant them. he clearly isn’t the type to say things you want to hear, so when he says something like “get them home, now.” he means it. he wants them to live, and to be able to go home and rest. sure, he starts off with only mentioning the carrier, but the more panicked he becomes, the more it progresses into “home”. another subtlety is a voice crack. a goddamn voice crack, y’all. when rooster goes “but what about maverick?!” he replies: “tell him there’s nothing he can do for maverick, not in a goddamn F-18!” and in that little “can do” bit, is his voice crack. it’s small, it’s light, it’s quick. he says the words so fast, it’s incredibly easy to miss. but it’s there. and once you notice it, it’s hard to miss after that. after that, though, the rest is all mostly facial expressions, with only some wordplay and tone of voice. but do pay attention to them, because they speak volumes on his concern.

look, it’s not, nor has it ever been, that beau doesn’t care, or only cares a little. he does care, deeply. probably enough so that it frustrates him, i’m sure. he just has to hide it, due to working in a flawed system that doesn’t award empathy and concern. a system that teaches you to use your head, not your heart. but even as he does use his head, his heart leaks out in little ways…
