Asriel x Marisa Headcanon (contains spoilers)

Mrs. Coulter sneaks out to visit the baby when she thinks that her husband is asleep. One night, Edward Coulter follows. He ransacks the place, searching for Lyra, determined to kill her. Before he does, Marisa kills him. She convinces Asriel to take the blame, saying that the law would allow him to kill Edward in defense of his home. At the trail, she testifies against him. She describes in detail how Asriel killed her husband, and the horror she felt while watching him do this. Asriel lost his estate, and wanted nothing to do with Marisa, feeling that she betrayed him. Marisa wants nothing more to do with the child, feeling immense guilt over killing her husband, and harming Asriel. She also feels shame over the affair in general, viewing it as sinful. Sometimes, she still dreams about the moments of happiness she had with Asriel and her child before Edward found them.

I want to talk about this scene.

Against her better judgement, Lyra wants desperately to believe that Mrs Coulter really is the nice, kind woman who thought her to be extraordinary. That the woman hurting her right now isn’t really her.

This, we know, isn’t true. But the thing is, Lyra is right. Just in a different way than intended.

One very clever Youtuber was talking about how, in usual mundane activities, you never seem to grasp Marisa’s daemon part of her soul. She acts softly, kindly and elegantly, while the monkey shamefully trots behind her or watches her from afar, trying not to be noticed. It’s, however, when she’s run over by the most primal emotions ( love, fear, rage, desperation ) that you truly understand why he settled as that. They’re both curious, they’re both cunning and they’re both feral. She even mimics his sadistic way of hitting his prey when she’s on top of Benjamin ( gyptian ). He mimics her expression of anguish and pure pain when Lyra runs away. And, even if we haven’t seen it yet, in the books her and her daemon were mirroring each other when she was meeting Asriel again on the mountain. It’s only when she allows her emotional barriers to be taken down that she reveals her animalistic side and shows who she truly is to the viewer/reader.

Top Ten Ships (Take One)

How am I even going to do this?

Rules: 1. One per show/franchise 2. No OT3s 3. THEY DO NOT HAVE TO BE CANON TO BE INCLUDED (but to be honest, being canon probably would help with the ordering) 4. I have to complete at least one season of a show for it to be considered. Gintama won’t be included even though I watched 50 or so episodes because the full season is 200+ 5. It doesn’t have to be influenced by canon material

Honourable Mentions:

Hirotaka x Narumi

(Don’t text and drive kids)

Even though they’re adults, they’re kind of noobs when it comes to relationships. At first, we think that they get together on a whim, but we see some things that happened prior to their employment. Let’s just say, it’s been a long time in the making, and they accept each other for being themselves (or have given up on trying to change the other; whatever works).

Satoru x Kayo

Don’t mind me. I’ll just be sitting here in a ball being mad. Don’t ask why. Just leave me be.

Hotaru x Gin

(Gin is so fricking smooth. He got game while the rest of us don’t even stand a chance.) *cough and wheeze* I’m okay. Really, I’m okay. It was only 50 minutes, but it was enough to make me ship it.

Urara x Ryuu

Finally, harem characters with logic. It’s nice. These two are a bit of an unlikely pair. I really watched it for Saori Hayami at first, but I ended up growing attached to these characters and read the last few chapters of the manga. And for any fans of Shirayuki, this one has both Saori Hayami and Ryota Osaka. It might be a harem, but it’s one of those that you kind of go “We know exactly who’s going to end up with who.” Seeing it being made official pleases the soul.

Taiga x Ryuuji

(A couple that spittakes together stay together) If you didn’t know these two were end game, I think you need to learn a thing or two about romance anime. People who go, “Oh, but it’s obvious they’re going to end up together.” Is that not a good 90% of romance anime? Seeing these characters develop and grow closer to each other, seeing the reasons as to why they are them, and watching them mature in front of our very eyes, it’s nice.

Edward x Winry

Because of the one ship per show rule, these two had to take the sidelines. To be honest, we all knew this was coming, but it was still such a nice ending that it warmed my heart. Fullmetal Alchemist has one of the best anime endings in my opinion. They’re both a bit like tsunderes, but they’re also both their own people. Winry is an established mechanic, and Edward is the infamous short-metal alchemist.

LITERALLY ALL THE OTHER GOOD BNHA SHIPS

I really wanted to break the rule to throw in Bakugou x Kirishima, but I made the one per show rule for a reason. Other honourable mentions are (in order) Todoroki x Yaoyorozu, Todoroki x Midoriya, Kaminari x Jirou, Tokoyami x Tsuyu, etc. I can go on about these guys for days.

TOP TEN

10. Yuugo x Aki

Silver Spoon in itself is an underrated anime, but this ship is so shippable. Of course, it’s meant to be canon, so Arakawa really went all out with making these characters likeable as individuals, but they’re even better together! Aki is a hardworking, horse-loving, kind-hearted girl while Hachiken (Yuugo) is an equally hardworking, smart, intuitive thinker who just likes this girl and will do a lot to make her happy.

9. Shouko x Shouya

(That won’t be the last time she jumps… too soon?) This isn’t canon, and I really understand why. You don’t want to cloud the message of this masterpiece by inserting a romance (even if I wanted it so darn bad). I haven’t read the manga though. Don’t hate me for that. So much happens during the movie that makes their relationship great. The realistic ups and downs, misunderstandings, and honesty that comes with their individual characters make it so their development is great on its own, but I just really wanted to see them end up together.

8. Yato x Hiyori

Maybe this is only in this position because of the age gap (which is hilariously large if you think about it). She’s of age in Japan, but she’s still a minor from my perspective. Nonetheless, Hiyori is such a kindhearted person who gets a bad rap for being known as the weak damsel type, but I would argue again that. She saves both Yato and Yukine and gives them the love and comfort that they’re missing. She’s what keeps them sane and human. Yato may be obsessive and creepy at times (okay, a lot of the time) but he has a good heart. There have been many ship moments that would indicate this is going to become canon too (whether tragedy seeps or not).

7. Karma x Manami

*puts on a helmet* Okay, jokes aside, I really liked Karma x Nagisa too, but this one is my top one from Assassination Classroom. I know it’s probably too cliche with the whole “Nerd liking a delinquent”, but Okuda has a bit of delinquent in her too. Nobody without a sense of mischief would enlace cyanide with chocolate knowing someone was going to eat it. I have seen so many cute things on this. Just go to my spam blog and search the tag up. Honestly, I don’t care that it’s one of the least popular ships in the series. They have a love of good moments that are canon too. She sticks up for him even when he’s not around, she gave him chocolates on Valentine’s (yes, it still counts), he said that she’s the girl he would choose out of the class (that doesn’t include Nagisa but still), and she is such a good and caring friend. He would also defend her if it came down to it because they’re friends which makes a start for a good ship.

6. Shion x Nezumi

I hope you all don’t get mad about this list because there’s only one gay couple. There are so many that I wanted to include, but they all ended up getting cut (plus, when you have a smaller pool to work with, it’s tough). I also haven’t watched a lot of sports anime either. Anyway, Nezumi and Shion are canonly in love with each other. They protect and fight alongside each other, and they’re depicted really well. They didn’t need fanservice to build such a deep relationship. They had each other, and they would sacrifice a lot to see the other alive and happy. The ending might break my heart a little, but the relationship still stands.

5. Roy x Riza

(I couldn’t not include this gif)

Arakawa… why? Why do you do this? Also, me choosing between Edward x Winry and this was excruciating. Not as bad as choosing a BNHA ship, but it was still up there. They’re not canon because they’re both a part of the military apparently. Blah blah blah… say whatever you want, but some things you just don’t do unless you’re in love. She said it herself, “I would follow you to hell if I had to.” She always stuck by his side to keep him level-headed, focussed, and ultimately sane. Her reaction to the idea of him dying can send chills down any spine. He trusts her with his life, and I was so angry when they didn’t end up together.

4. Atsushi x Kyouka

It was either that or maybe Oda x Dazai. Ultimately, I would choose this one any day. Yes, I know you might call me “pedo”, but it’s a four-year age difference, and I can wait for them to be of age. I have the time. After watching Dead Apple, it bumped it up. There were so many good moments between them (besides Atsushi being a little weakling that had to get saved by Kyouka). She’s one of my favourite characters too, and she can hold her own in any fight. Neither of these characters deserved their tragic backstories (especially when we meet Kyouka when she’s in the midst of one). Together, they’re light in each other’s worlds, and they have already technically been on a date. They value each other and compliment each other. She is level-minded, and he’s more upbeat, but together, they protect each other and Yokohama.

3. Alibaba x Morgiana

Guess who still needs to read the manga? Regardless, doesn’t it feel great when both characters in a ship are awesome? I also ship the notorious chaotic gay couple (Hakuryuu x Judar), but I’m sticking with this. Maybe that’s why these ships are all on here. I love them individually, but they’re even better together! Morgiana is one of my favourite characters ever. She’s a beautiful, strong, and resilient warrior, and Alibaba is a flip-flopping bum who has a ton of ideals, a sensitive soul, and probably a lot of insecurities that keep him up at night. He saved her from a life of slavery at first, but she carries and saves him throughout this whole story. She’s adorable, he’s a wimp, and together, they are just amazing.

2. Midoriya x Uraraka

The “one show” rule just had to pry those other ships out, huh? Bakugou x Kirishima could’ve easily jumped their way to five without that rule, but I had to because there are too many good BNHA ships. Imagine taking two pure beings and putting them in a relationship. It’s so sweet and lovable and amazing. Some might complain because this is cliche and plain, but this is a perfect example of not ruining what isn’t broken. Not all problems need to happen within their relationship. Sometimes, it’s external factors are what challenges them. Their relationship is so natural and innocent, and with it being close to canon, it won’t wreck me on the inside.

1. Soul x Maka

This was one of my first OTPs, so maybe this is because I have a soft spot for it. They are both heavily reliant on each other. One is the weapon and the other is the wielder. They understand each other really well, and they both want to get stronger for each other. They do a lot together which isn’t weird considering they live together (plus the fanservice cat). I find that they aren’t necessarily opposites, but they are different in some ways while really alike in others. It’s argued whether they’re canon or not, but I kind of like to think that they are. I haven’t fully read the manga in its entirety yet, but I hope that they one day adapt it into an anime again but this time relying more on the manga. I guess it can be like Fullmetal Alchemist.
