Change of scenery

Thailand locate in a tropical zone and summer all year round make the leaf shown only the shade of green. Even though the exotic trees were grown in Thailand either outdoor, adaptation or modification. The foliage still green and mundane.

Pesticide, air pollution, mining or soil degradation can change the tree’s appearance. Fortunately, the outcome “changes in colors of foliage” is simulate the season as yellow, orange or brown foliage in autumn.

Canker in Cypress is a fungus in the gene of seiridium. It cause die-back at the branch. Then the branch will gradually start to change the color from green to yellow, orange, brown and die. This method generate the atmosphere of autumn.

Blight has similar process as cypress but originated from different family, Cylindrocladrium. It creates atmosphere of autumn, but the color is mostly appear as yellow and light brown.

Soil degradation - Color and spot on the leaf is a symptom when the soil is lacking of the essential elements for growth such as Sulfur, Iron or Phosphorus. Degraded soil is found near mine due to the process of mineral extraction. Then left over soil is lack of element.

The calendar illustrates the season in each months which match with real season in upper part of the world.

Aesthetic of Control

 Maze is essential part of the garden. It means meditation and reflection (like a path to pilgrimage). The technique of “extreme control” is challenged and similar as creating nature on the concrete surface. 

Terraces and steps are imitated Tuscany hill where Italian gardens were initiated.

The garden is divided into 2 part: Customary and Mistreatment garden

Staircase is the iconic of Italian garden. It merges 2 separate space together in order to expand the garden. The main garden is a heart of the garden since it locates in the center and link upper garden and maze garden together.

Maze is essential part of the garden. It means meditation and reflection (like a path to pilgrimage). Arches shrubs close to the building acts as “colonade” between the living area in the house and garden.

Esedra break the colonnade and indicates the end point of the garden. This can be suitable place for conversation like what people do in the ancient time.

Mistreatment Garden - All the plants in this zone is growing with disease, fungus and unusual technique to generate new atmosphere by the outcome and reaction of the trees.

Canker in cypress is a fungus in the gene of Seiridium. It causes die-back at the branch. The branch will gradually changing the color from green to yellow, orange, brown and eventually die. The orange and brown on the foliage generates the feeling and the atmosphere of autumn,

Blight - similar process as cypress but different fungus involved. This generate the atmosphere of autumn, but mostly in yellow and light brown. Using degraded soil is also capable to change the outcome. Colors of the foliage will be varied by the element it absorbed from the soil. For instance, foliage turns into shade of light green and yellow because soil lack of Sulfur.

After the plants were killed continuously, it will be replaced with new immediately vis the crane (BMU). The hanging rail of the building facilitates the garden keepers to carry the tree from one side to the opposite side.

Hydraulic lift move tree vertically and ready to replace. Nursery at the back act as a spare or storage the tree. Once the tree die and need replacement. Management team can transform the nursery to the garden instantly.

Irrigation system - As the pathway was elevated by “Buzon decking”, the water pipes can go underneath and link to planting zone by smaller pipe and sprinkle. Besides, the drainage from either rain or watering can be reused since the drainage tube is linking back to the tank with water filtration.

City Escape Destination

Canal pass through Koh San Chao is just a passage way between two neighbour floating market, but no one stope here except private group tour with only several people and elusive.

First of all, the community need attractive icon or artefact to grab tourists’ attention while they travel along the canal. 

This tunnel set along the canal which able to grab tourists’ attention, provide shade for some distance and display local goods such as flowers, handcraft product or local perfume.

Second part, giant staircase on waterfront is multi purpose and function. The staircase has water running under the tread for cooling people stayed above. People can sit, relax, meet or eat some food on the stair. Roof of the stair case can be used as observation deck to see canopy. 

At the back side of staircase has cafe under the observation deck for local people to open the shop and sell local food. 

Moving northward, desert land (ditch) and existing trees will be part of “private veranda”. Private veranda is a tiny hidden space like city escape, tourists can use it to relax, rest, sleep, meditate or just  stay for privacy and privacy. The entrance and whole walkway is built below the surface of water, which allow people to feel like they are walking through water. Water surface may varied due to climate and season.

Koh San Chao community

Koh san chao is historical community locates in suburban of west Bangkok. The community has long history of farmer and agriculture since 400 years ago. In dilemma, local people start leaving the community due to changes of lifestyle, works and society such as working in office, factory or business in downtown. It is also confront with eviction since many real estate companies buy all the land and construct modern house types. Then most of the suburban area, including some part of Koh san chao, are demolishing and become housing project.

Koh san chao is historical community locates in suburban of west Bangkok. The community has long history of farmer and agriculture since 400 years ago. In dilemma, local people start leaving the community due to changes of lifestyle, works and society such as working in office, factory or business in downtown. It is also confront with eviction since many real estate companies buy all the land and construct modern house types. Then most of the suburban area, including some part of Koh san chao, are demolishing and become housing project.

Nowadays, several family in this community want to survive from those housing company by adapt tourism into the community to create identity. So the area will be under conservation zone and survive from eviction.  They also use canal as a transportation to assist tourism since there are 2 famous floating market along the canal. Koh san chao is in the middle between two markets, so it can be a stop for tourism. However, tourism strategy is not successful.

There are many factors that make this place disappear from tourists such as uninviting accessibility like road and pathway. Also the walking route that cover community is non direct. Also small, unsafe and disordered vine and plants on the pathway.

Strategy to eradicate uninviting way and indirect route are setting center as a market or gathering space since tourists always interested in activities, food, beverage, souvenir and sitting area for rest. Then connect all the scatter houses to center by different colors pathway make the route easily to walk and accessible to each house if tourists interested in extra workshop or want to see  more process of production. In addition, creating pathways through the trees in order to bring people to have interactions with nature.

AGGREGATION

Nowadays people usually live in modern residence, which lack of identity, loss most function that appropriate with local condition and especially live in dense area. Public and private area in present residence were completely separated.

In this project, the building will bring back the sense, function and condition of endemic home to make people feel home. Also, people who live in high rise might feel stress and uncomfortable due to the surrounded context such as privacy, perspective view or limited space.

Site selection is relevant to the concept of the project.

First, every units must face to empty space since it can relieve user’s stress from the city. It’s also boost people’s mind and creativity. Second, border between urban since it is unable to urbanize. So user can get the view of empty space fully and everlastingly because no one going to build and hide this building.

Privacy hierarchy become  part of the designing since it provide both private and public at the same time and adjustable by the user. The arrangement of each units will be stacking non-overlapping to create common space between each units and allow users to use it. Common spaces are scatter around the building whether between the units or part of the circulation. Therefore, common space can be used by anyone, not only for the next door, but also for people who walk pass through.

Multilayer is designed for adjusting the privacy to integrate vernacular’s life and modern day’s lifestyle. It can be completely closed/private like vernacular courtyard house or open like common space in modern condominium/public building. Layerings were influenced by Mashrabiya, local widsom of privacy filtration made of wood in islamic pattern. It will be applied to both doors and windows to control condition in each units.

Common spaces are scattered around the building and in between each units that allow everyone to use and interact (by both next door and anyone who circulate).  Also locate on the ground floor as garden and common space with the similar feeling and layout of grand courtyard.

Living area can be both turned to super private area and public area by the arch doors connected to common space. Arch doors at the living area are opening to welcome people and allow interaction between owners and others outside.

Private courtyard is built in every unit to create ventilation, passive cooling like in endemic home and provide the feeling of courtyard house to make users feel home.

Another side of the unit is facing to empty space (Sahara desert). So users can watch the views to relieve stress, boost mind and creativity as watching therapy.

However, the multilayers windows can filter sunlight and sand dust with ventilation still working through the lattice pattern.

Common spaces are scattered around the building and in between each units that allow everyone to use and interact (by both next door and anyone who circulate).

Domestic Devices

Nowadays lifestyle was dramatically changed, people are living in mundane condominium. Which lost in identity, feeling of home and local wisdom in housing that people had invented to enrich their traditional life before modern day technology.

Bringing back the ornaments or identity can make users feel home and enjoy the local wisdom that people had invented. In this situation, courtyard are in the house had been adapt into balcony and allow users to use it as usual courtyard in traditional courtyard. Here is not only replaced with court but also add and integrate more function into it.

Vernacular - Cairo Courtyard House

Cairo is a hot desert climate city locates at the end of Nile river. Area along the river is green and afterward from the green are desert.  The community usually consists of housing, mosques and markets. 

Courtyard is one of the most essential elements of the housing in this area. It is a passive cooling that allows ventilation and wind to pass through every single room in the house. Also bring the natural light to the rooms surrounded the courtyard. Moreover, the court in the middle are available for growing vegetations and installing fountain to enrich moisture.

Contrast between interior and exterior - Interior and the decoration are influenced by Ottoman Empire and classical elements from Europe such as Roman columns or arches, together with Islamic ornaments from the religion such as carpet, geometric or flora patterns.

Mashrabiya - Overhang lattice works covering windows with Islamic patterns. It is not only for a decoration but also increases privacy, controls sunlight and allow ventilation to works as usual with filter sand dust.

Plan and its privacy - Perpendicular corridor at the main entrance can prevent pedestrian’s visual to look inside and also blocking sand dust that may blows into the house. So the sand will be remained only at the porch. The thickness of the exterior wall are designed alleviate the heat that going into the house. 

For activities, only male guest can stay at the Qa’a (living room) only due to religious rules about gender restrictions. Another notable activity of the local people are bath culture since the climate is hot and arid throughout the year. Therefore, bathroom of this culture has more functions and larger comparing to other culture’s bathroom. So water, moisture and therapy can reduce and enrich their body and health as well.

CONTEXT IMAGE

Using provided 3D model from in- structure and adding environment. is one is focusing on the sun- light that students have to create by occasionally according to selected environment and perspective view.

RENDER

Rendering architecture structure and environment objects both organic and inorganic form such as car, tree or floor. Also controlling sun light and shadow. In addition, learning about lightning direction in case the environment is in the night time or need some light to project specific objects.

In this phrase, students were introduced to render and collage. We applied constructing form into render, light, shadow and choosing materials. Eventually, merging rendered output and background together, also illuminating some light and shadow.

DEFORMATION

Illustrating an estimated graphical lines of individual form that students have brought to class.  The left figure are illustrated by wrapping individual object by grid paper.  en creates lines and height based on geographical of the object in each grids.

Subtraction and porosity

Constructing 3 distinct rectangular solids by using foam.  en merging all 3 blocks together as the  pure above. Finally drawing the over- all model, intersect pieces and splited pieces.

SECTION CUT Construct at least 8 pieces of geometry volume given by instructors in any arrangement. Together with drawing completed model with hidden lines and shadow, horizontal section cut, vertical section cut and construction lines with hidden lines.

RESIDENCE

- Residents are able to see 360 degree view from only one position with the maximum area of 50 square meters and the volume of 300 cubic. The resident has 5 essential rooms to satisfy the habitation; sleeping, defecating, cleaning of the body, consuming food, relaxing and working space. Furthermore, every rooms are definitely locate in different height so that resident can see 360 degrees views. 1 floor height is 3 meters, so people can still see the views either from foot to head or some places that has overlapped by furnitures, there will be at least one space for seeing. In addition, furniture like bed, bathtub, sofa and table will be stick to structure of the house, so people do not have to worry about space.

METROPOLIS

- Parameter : Transportation - Roads & RailwaysConcept: Separate people and transportation to different layer since most accident occurred are caused by transportation.

- There are two main layer in this city.

1st layer Earth surface- Roads and Railways.

2nd layer Elevated ground - Where people live and entrances of every building.

After people and transportation has been separated, the chance of accident that going to occur is less than normal city. In addition, there are no intersection in this city because the intersection is one of the factor of traffic problems. The solution is vertical roads and horizontal roads are in different height and connected by bridges (like U-turn bridge) so people who want to change the direction have to use connection bridge.
