Reactions to tragedy
In real life, pretty much everybody reacts to tragedy differently. So why is it that every author has their pet reaction to tragedy that all their characters use? Not only is it unrealistic, but it takes away the chance for the characters’ different reactions to reveal things about themselves.
Possible reactions to tragedy (not an exhaustive list):
Distracting oneself with mindless activities
Distracting oneself with others’ humor
Distracting oneself by making jokes
Distracting oneself by reading/watching/playing stories
Distracting oneself with hard mental work
Distracting oneself with hard physical work
Distracting oneself with creative endeavors
Distracting oneself by chatting with friends about normal things
Talking to friends about the tragedy
Talking to authority figures about the tragedy
Talking anonymously with strangers about the tragedy (if possible)
Getting wrapped up in others’ problems
Staying unusually silent
Screaming
Crying loudly
Crying silently
Doing everything possible not to cry
Pacing
Taking unhealthy risks
Going for revenge against whoever one can blame
Punching random objects
Throwing random objects
Lashing out against friends and family members
Trying to prevent a similar tragedy from happening
Eating more than usual
Not eating
Taking mind-altering substances
Getting in unhealthy relationships
Isolating oneself
Obsessing over routine
Numbness combined with apathy
Numbness combined with going through one’s normal motions
Trying to get things back the way they were
Denial
No reaction at first but a reaction hits later in greater force
No reaction at all. Emotions relating to the tragedy just fail to load. Note that this can happen to anybody and does not mark a character as a sociopath.
Characters can have more than one reaction at the same time, one reaction after another, or different reactions to different tragedies.

ABC Writing
I’ve been seeing a lot of posts about writer’s block, so I have an idea to hopefully get some ideas going. Reblog this with a sentence about sick (can be whatever you’d like) in the order of of the alphabet. I’ll start with A:
Aggressively rubbing my nose to keep from sneezing.
And so on…

Can you reblog this with your hogwarts house if you know it? I wanna see if there’s a correlation with our enjoyment of seeing characters in pain to it. Idk call it an experiment :)

Super helpful!
Injuries Reference List
If you’re writing anything where your characters are getting injured a lot, it might be helpful to have an injuries reference list on hand. WELL, DON’T WORRY ABOUT IT BECAUSE I CREATED ONE. This is mostly the result of me having to look up something every time a character was gravely injured/being a lifeguard for seven years. I have some knowledge of first aid and how it might apply to the characters in your story.
Simple scrapes/cuts: There’s usually not much to worry about besides MAYBE an infection, which can be avoided with rubbing alcohol or peroxide. Remember, peroxide usually doesn’t burn or sting, but rubbing alcohol probably will. These injuries will bleed for a short amount of time, but it shouldn’t last too long.
Bruising: These occur when the blood vessels break under the skin, forming discoloration of the skin. The colors can vary, but they are usually purplish, bluish, or yellow. Again, this injury is usually not serious if it’s a result of a bump or cut, but if there’s significant bruising over a large area of the body there might be a serious problem. Usually time heals bruising.
Sprains: A sprain is torn or stretched ligament, but it is NOT a break. It is very common for someone to sprain an ankle or a wrist and it usually doesn’t require serious medical attention. The area might swell and should be iced. Sprains are usually treated with rest and a device that compresses the area—such as a sling or a bandage.
Broken bones (arms, fingers, legs, toes): Breaks can be serious, especially if they have to be set back into place. A person will most likely not be able to put pressure on a broken bone until it is healed (which could take weeks). A broken bone is REALLY serious when it fractures or breaks through the skin completely. If you write a character in this sort of situation, they will need to worry about infection and they might have to wait until the swelling goes down before splitting or covering.
Burns: Obviously, there are different degrees of burns, but simple burns will most likely be treated the same. Even the smallest burns will probably sting like hell, so it can be hard to function with an untreated burn. SERIOUS burns might require amputation (I’m talking about maybe 3rd to 4th degree burns). As a 1st degree burn is healing, it might itch—think how sunburn starts to itch after a while.
Broken back: A broken back can lead to paralysis, so you need to be very careful with how you treat someone. Your characters shouldn’t be throwing anyone over their shoulders with a back injury because it will only lead to more serious problems. If you suspect that someone has broken or injured their back, you need to keep them still until there is a way to safely move them.
Amputation: This happens when the removal of a body part because necessary to someone’s survival. If someone has a bad infection or there’s no way to stop the bleeding (you’ve applied a tourniquet, which will most likely end up causing an amputation later), a character might have to amputate in a serious situation.
Dislocated limb: If a bone “pops” out of its socket, a character might have to put it back into place. A dislocated limb restricts movement, so your character might not be able to go forward until the situation is resolved. Arms and fingers are commonly dislocated and there will probably be pain when they’re set back into place. Those limbs should be rested and iced to prevent swelling.
Jammed fingers: If you get your finger caught in a door, for example, and it doesn’t break; you might have a jammed finger. I’ve had a few of these in my life, which usually causes bruising and some pain, but it heals on its own. These types of injuries can be from jamming your fingers against something hard and you might lose a finger nail. They will most likely hurt for a while until they are healed.
Stab wounds: These are usually deep cuts by a knife or a sword or another sharp object. They need to be treated, as they are prone to infection, and they should be bandaged. If the bleeding is excessively bad, a common way to stop the bleeding is to get stitches or cauterize the wound. Cauterization is the process of burning the wound in order to seal it up. Think of lightsabers in Star Wars. No one bleeds when they’re cut because the “blade” of the lightsaber cauterizes the wound as it cuts. Your characters might have to stitch someone or cauterize someone in an emergency situation.
Gunshot wounds: Getting shot is a serious/life threatening situation, so your characters would need immediate medical attention. In an emergency situation, the bullet might have to be dug out and the wound cauterized if the bleeding is severe. If the bullet goes in and out, you might just have to worry about infection and covering the wound. A gunshot wound will be painful and will take a while to heal. If someone is shot in the leg, they will have trouble walking. The limbs will need time to heal.
Poisoning: This is a wide topic that could include food poisoning to being poisoned by another character, but they will probably feel very sick. Symptoms will include vomiting, dehydration, diarrhea, etc. Your character might get severe stomach aches and will not be able to function.Being poisoned can be deadly and can happen quickly. A medicine called Ipecac will induce vomiting in order to get the poisons out of someone’s symptoms, but will not work for EVERYTHING. Further treatment might be necessary.
Stomach wound: A person with a stomach wound will not last very long without addressing it. If it is deep enough, it will kill off your character unless the bleeding and infection can be stopped. Infection is usually what kills people with stomach wounds or gunshot wounds.
This is a list to be used for WRITING purposes only. Obviously you should call a doctor or get emergency treatment if something is serious. I also wrote this list assuming that your characters don’t have access to medical professionals, so keep that in mind. Hope this helps!

Caelie’s Crash Course: DID Edition

(Preemptive banner to ensure maximum safety of this post. I’ll explain endos further down.)
This post is sponsored by: Singlets Don’t Really Know Anything About Us, Do They? and I’m Tired Of The Misinformation, Karen and also If You Only Know About DID From The Media, You Don’t Know Anything About DID.
Enough showmanship, let’s go ahead to the meat of the matter, shall we? Feel free to just skip around and only read the bolded stuff, think of those bits as your TL;DR.
———
What does DID mean?
DID stands for Dissociative Identity Disorder. Yes, it was previously classified (erroneously) as Multiple Personality Disorder — almost thirty years ago. In 1992, Multiple Personality Disorder was reclassified as Dissociative Identity Disorder. Which means there’s no reason to continue calling it Multiple Personality Disorder or to refer to anyone as having multiple personalities.
Why the change from MPD to DID?
It’s actually really simple. The disorder was reclassified after research found it’s a dissociative disorder, not a personality disorder. That’s why we don’t call system members personalities, too.
So what exactly is DID?
DID is a dissociative disorder brought on by repeated early childhood trauma. For DID to occur, the patient must have experienced repeated trauma between the ages of six to nine. This trauma is too much for the brain to handle, so in order to cope, it splits off into two or more distinct people who handle different aspects of the trauma and day-to-day life. While the initial split has to occur between the ages of six and nine, new alters can form at any time after that. New alters commonly form due to additional trauma occurring or in response to highly stressful situations.
Is DID the only way to have a system?
No. There are two disorders that can cause alters to form, DID and OSDD-1. You must have either DID or OSDD-1 to have a system. Anyone who says otherwise is lying to you and spreading misinformation. (This is where the endos come in.)
There are people who do try to say you don’t need a disorder to be a system! These people also tend to spread other misinformation and lies that are directly harmful to actual systems. Beware of anyone calling themself endo/endogenic, a tulpamancer/tulpa, quoigenic, a soulbond, a natural system, a kin system, a BPD system, or a non-trauma system. To break it down quickly: Endos, quoigenics, natural systems, and non-trauma systems aren’t possible by definition of what a system is; Tulpamancers are appropriating a closed religious practice for a culture that most certainly is not theirs; Soulbonds and kin systems conflate their otherkins or fictionkins with alters, which is very harmful; BPD is a personality disorder and does not cause or include having alters.
So what’s the difference between DID and OSDD-1?
It’s in the diagnostic criteria! DID consists of having two or more distinct parts (commonly referred to as alters), dissociation between parts, and dissociative amnesia. What this boils down to is having alters and often not being aware of them or the time they spent fronting without you.
OSDD-1 is split into multiple categories. OSDD-1a consists of two or more parts that can influence and control the body, but the parts are not distinct. OSDD-1b consists of two or more distinct parts, but there is no dissociative amnesia between them.
How do you refer to the parts in a system?
The clinical term for us is “alters,” but there are some systems who don’t like to use that terms. I’d recommend just asking if it doesn’t already say somewhere how they’d prefer to be referred to. Some other words systems use in place of alters are:
Parts
System Members
System Mates
Headmates
Others
What kinds of alters are there?
These aren’t all the alter types, but these are the most common you’ll see.
Hosts/Mains: The alter(s) who usually front most often.
Protectors: These alters usually front to protect the body or the system from perceived external threats.
Persecutors: These alters tend to harm the system or the body. They’ll get their own section after this.
System Littles/Syskids: These alters are children, treat them as you would any other child of their age.
Internal Self-Helpers: These alters hold most of the information about the system. They can control access to this information as well.
Introjects: These alters are “based” off another person, who may be someone in the system’s life or a fictional character. Introjects may look, talk, or act like the person they’re “based” from.
Gatekeepers: These alters control switching and access to the front.
Memory Holders: These alters hold memories from the system’s past that other alters may not, often these are trauma memories.
Fragments: These are alters that are not fully distinct from other alters. They may seem rather two-dimensional as a result.
Nonhumans: These alters present as something other than human in the headspace, and may believe as such that they are nonhuman, regardless of the body. For example within our own system: I am a doll, Azrael is an angel, etc.
Aren’t persecutors evil/abusers/murderers/etc.?
(I know this entire section is bold. It’s the most important section here.)
No. Persecutors are not evil. There is no such thing as an “evil” alter. Persecutors usually harm only the body or other alters if they harm anyone. It is very rare they harm anyone outside the system. They have their own reasons for what they do, often rooted in trauma or a skewed sense of “helping” or what’s right and wrong. Yes, it is up to them to recognize what behaviors are brought on by trauma and work through that, but these behaviors do not make them evil.
So can I write characters with DID if I’m a singlet (someone who is not a system)?
(This section is also very important and will contain a lot of bold.)
Yes, but do your research first. Read sites like DID Reasearch, Trauma Dissociation, and This Is Not Dissociative. Talk to actual systems about their experiences. If you can, get a system who can sensitivity read for you and listen to their criticisms. I can tell you now, anyone in my system who’s able would be glad to help you with what is and isn’t okay to say when writing characters with DID.
As a general rule of thumb though, do not write “evil” alters. This trope is directly harmful to systems. Again, please just find a system willing to sensitivity read your work.
———
Congrats, you’ve made it to the end! That’s all I have to say on the subject, though this is just surface-level info on DID. Feel free to send any questions to us if you’d like more in-depth info on any of the topics covered here! You can also ask questions about our system and experiences if you’d like!
And lastly:
