i often think about that split second where orpheus has turned around, the wash of relief, love, joy, love, love, love that he feels when he sees eurydice. there is darkness and doubt all around him, the ache of his feet, the feeling of defeat, and in his desperation borne of love he sees her. and for a split second, love takes over. the last thing eurydice sees is love etched into every corner of her husbands face before she is dragged back into death.

Hadestown is the best take on the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, because all over the internet I see people say, "You're not supposed to think of how he could have succeeded! That misses the total point of the story. Everyone was doomed and there was no way anything could have worked out alright. If you're imagining a scenario that didn't end in tragedy, you're just an arrogant fool. Just shut up and be sad about it"

But Hadestown says, "please please please think of how it could have been. Orpheus would have never looked back if he just had hope, please have hope, he would have wanted us to have hope. If you don't walk out of this theater thinking of how it could have been, we have failed you. go have hope, go see the world in the way it could be, so help us"

people will claim they “listen to anything” but get mad when I get aux and play a new orleans jazz retelling of orpheus and eurydice, a pop opera based on war and peace, a disney stage musical about a literal predator burning down Paris for one (1) girl, an 80s mega musical about a slightly gay cop, an 80s mega musical about a slightly very creepy man named erik, or a jukebox musical that’s just an excuse to sing pre existing abba songs

been following along with the sandbox collective's LSOH and i noticed something really fun and interesting costume-wise...

ok so for the most part, the characters wear pretty neutral, almost black-and-white movie type costumes with some brown, but then... i noticed in some videos you can see Visual Audrey II Influence, which i always really like. it's most obvious here, where the camera shows the back of seymour, and it looks like he has alien spores or something growing on him in bright neon green, like audrey two's influence is literally clinging to him, visible on him.

and here are the spores also growing on mr mushnik!

then we have a similar looking green-spores scarf for audrey one as well! hard to say at what point this image is set at within the show though.

finally idk why the video downloaded in like 144p but i also have a look at audrey two:

which is definitely a super duper alien look: there on the head we've got the same green spores visible, and then what looks like sci-fi alien armour in the last image.

that's it! just thought the idea of audrey two visibly "infecting" the characters as its influence grows is really, really cool.
