no animal was harmed during the making of this video. not one. for the few minutes that we were shooting film, the guns of each hunter fell silent. the industrial bolt throwers observed a moment's peace and the jaws of every predator hung softly open. no fish bit any hook and the bait worms held off on drowning only until the cameras stopped. the tails of ruminants ceased to flick just as their attendant flies, in unison, landed on their flanks to catch their tiny breaths. a spider instantly stopped winding silk around a wasp, patiently waiting for the caesura to end. a young veterinarian paused with the syringe in their hand. somewhere, a colicky baby stopped biting its mother's nipple and nursed happily for the very first time. we're sorry. we're sorry it couldn't have been longer. we didn't know this would happen.

I did this in high school all the time. I found it more weird to stand up and recite this cult-ish sounding chant than sit and remain silent. I started staying seated around the middle of my sophomore year and continued doing it when I moved to a different school in my senior year. It was terrifying at first, but I was already known as the goth/punk kid so people kinda expected it of me. Regardless, I got many stares and glares and after a few days other students asked me why I was sitting during the pledge. I told them, and y'know what? They started sitting, too. By the end of my junior year, there were about 50-ish students who all sat during the pledge (which really wasn't a lot cuz we were a school of like 400-500 I think, maybe more). I didn't have as big of an impact at my second school for my senior year, but still.

That wasn't the first "against the norm" trend I started, but it was one of them.

dear usamerican high schoolers looking for a way to resist fascism: sit through the pledge of allegiance.

no getting up. no looking at the flag.

everyone will be looking at you. you'll be sweating like a fucking hippopotamus. your teacher will sternly tell you to get up. you'll feel stupid and that maybe its not worth it because you're just a kid in a classroom. but I'm here to remind you that there are no real life consequences to detention. there are however real life consequences to resisting a thoughtless performance of nationalism.

Look at every dip, curve, flat plane of skin, scar, beauty mark, and deformation like you haven't believed in love in years but then the hallmark of creations bumps into you at the library and makes some dumb joke about how you shouldn't run in the library, partly because you'll probably run into someone and partly because it's loud. And you can't help but to smile because fuck if this isn't so absurd that it is somehow funny.
