A Blessing in Disguise (AU)

🏈 」   DONE. they were finally going; finally saved enough money to escape the cold and to go on vacation. the kids yelled out disney world a year back, and since then, danny had been responsibly saving up. he even had a visible jar displayed out in the open, so the family could see their vacation status. dropping the last $100 bill in the crowded jar, he colored in the huge star soohyun had adorably drawn over the jar. 100%. after a whole year, they had finally reached 100%.

             vacation to disney world was probably nothing to most, but to them, it meant everything. “noona,” he called out, “we made it. we’re going on vacation. i’m taking you on vacation, just like i promised. i’m sorry it took so long, but pack your bags love, let’s escape the cold! the kids are going to be thrilled when they see this jar!” see, nothing was going to delay their plans, right?

            “Excuse me, but who are you calling sexy? Wouldn’t it be better to call me beautiful? Ethereal? Also, I never complain. You’re the one honking because I like to take my time putting myself together.” Once again, she’s still only joking. “I can’t look that good, you’re exaggerating.” When his hand came in contact with her leg, she placed her left hand on top. “I wanna go to the really cute baby store! It makes the experience feel more… Authentic? That’s not the word I’m looking for, but I’m sure you know what I mean. It feels different from a mall. In a good way.”

            Usually, she’d try to keep a more chic image. But, for some reason, there was just something light and airy about her current attitude in contrast to what could be considered her more lowkey, elegance afflicted moods. The smiles came easier, and her overall demeanor was much more relaxed. It was going to be a very, very excellent date. “By the way, you look really handsome. I really like when you  wear my earrings. They look really nice… Especially the crosses. It’s hard to compete with you, you know? You’re always the better looking one. One day, I’ll keep up.”

🏈 」   WELL, wasn’t that a given? handsome. he’s heard that countless of times, so much so, he lost count years and years ago, but her compliments never bored him. in fact, they were music to his ears, overwhelmed him with a sense of wonder and innocence. was that his heart beating? and what was up with the temperature? why was it getting extremely hot and unbearable? ‘it hards to compete with you... you’re always the better looking one.’ lies, what lies. how could he compete when she could and had done it all? he was the luckiest man alive, did she know that? he squeezed her thigh, slowly snuggling his shades on the bridge of his nose, to mask his embarrassed self. “you suck, did you know that?” he murmured instead, flashing a quick smile her way.

             “so,” he changed the subject, “remind me to buy a huge train set for the little kiddos. i’ve got an idea to get them to eat. and um. um. ummm. can you smile like that all the time? um... it makes my heart go, boom booom.” well that was cheesy and stupid. why was he suddenly getting so nervous again? “ANYWAY, we’re here. don’t move. I-I WILL ---” he cut off mid-sentence, and leaned in to place a kiss on her cheek after he unfastened the seat belt. then, he ran out of the driver’s seat and rushed to where yilun sat, failing to open the passenger’s door, again. oh right, the unlock button.

             “help,” the confused, helpless boy cried out.

                 what did she do to deserve this ? she can hear it ;  she KNEW that obnoxious  voice that emitted from her behind her door .  was her mind playing tricks on her   ━━━ well there was only one way of finding out .  standing up from her couch  ,  the witch makes her way towards her door  ;  removing the chains and locks she had on it before opening it .  

❛ Get out .  ❜  that damn kid .   months without seeing him  and suddenly , he pops before her like out of the blue .   her tiers fought the smile that yearned to ━━━ wait .. where those …. STICKY NOTES all over door  .  pulling her gaze away from the mischievous youth , her brown eyes fall on the condition of her door .

🏈 」    AND SHE WAS STANDING, in the exact position he needed her most in, oblivious to what was to come. in fact, even he didn’t know, but his body knew, and boy, was it in for trouble. because in one quick move, he sticks a bright green post it note on her forehead. the words, ‘miss me?’, written on the post it, haunts him as he snickers to himself. forget answering her, he had other more important, urgent business to address at the moment.

             “you’ve been served. now if i may; step aside, so i can enter. i have about five more packs of post it notes, so i must continue my duty and finish what i’ve started as i am a law abiding good citizen. i believe in equality and fairness. these sticky notes, deserve the same rights. now, move.”

🏈 」    IF THERE’S ONE THING DANNY’S BAD AT, it’s keeping in contact. it’s happened to him when his parents abandoned him, and unfortunately, it seemed, it has happened again. the running away from reality, that is! “oh. did you really ---” he pauses, dropping the last bits of kit kat bars to the ground. “i actually moved out of my apartment, and life kind of got hectic, in a good way. h-how... are you? how have you been? i owe you an apology and, dinner?”

            One would think Yilun literally spent one, solid hour beating her mug just for the sake of going out, but she was actually in her closet making an attempt at narrowing down outfits; what kind of person would she be if she wasn’t dressed to the nines? Her actual makeup routine was light for the day. Just a bit of highlighter, glossy red lids, and chapstick. Simple enough. She was going to spend a bit more time on her hair, perhaps tie it up in a ponytail to prevent it from looking like an absolute mess, but–

            Danny just had to hurry her along.

           She grabbed her bag and hurried out the door, slinging it over her shoulder while hurrying to the vehicle. Seeing him strapped in and ready to go made her sigh. “Hey. What did I say about the whole honking stuff. Don’t hurry me. Perfection takes time. I don’t hurry you when you take, like, ten years in the shower! Then, you spend ten more years combing your eyebrows! Add ten more years for the way you have to meticulously pick your shoes!” Of course, she was kidding. She spent just as much time as he did getting ready! Looking over at him, Yilun flashed one of those rare smiles. Teeth showing, eyes forming crescents. “Okay, anyway. Let’s go. We have a nice day ahead of us.”

🏈 」   A CHILD AT PLAY, he imagined all kinds of scenarios. race car driving, fleeing burglar scenes, but more importantly, he imagined himself, cruising down the beach, grabbing all attention from lingering eyes. boy, the reaction he’d receive if he was seen driving in this luxury good. the only issue was the color: rose gold --- a topic he’d bring to the table in the near future. nonetheless, he was going to take advantage of every breathing moment he had with the car, and the first thing on the list: honking. see, he had no choice but to jam the steering wheel because even the obnoxious honks, echoed luxury.

             however, at least temporarily, he was sidetracked. he swung his head backwards and to the side ( a difficult way to turn his head, since he literally could have just turned his head to the side ), a wide smile hanging on his expression. “hey there, sexy.” it wouldn’t have been danny if he didn’t examine her from head to toe with lustful, infatuated eyes. “all you do is complain, complain, and yet you come out looking like the baddest bitch on this planet.” he throws his right arm out after shifting gear to drive to gently grip her thigh. “to the mall? or to that cute baby store we pass all the time?

🏈 」    THE ONLY SPIDER HE WILL EVER LOVE, the only spider he will ever --- in a trance, the words play over and over in his head as he holds the prized possession in his hands. the ferrari. yilun’s ferrari. the one car he never imagined he’d have the opportunity to drive. not because it was yilun’s, but come on! the car cost more than basically, his life. “YOU SURE? ARE YOU HUNDRED, THOUSAND PERCENT SURE?” he repeats the same question over and over; surely, there’s something wrong. it has got to be pregnancy brain or something! how can she trust him?

             but even before she can doubt herself, he runs out of the house to unlock her ferrari. if he’s fastened in the driver’s seat, she can’t push him out! there would be no way of turning around. so, just like his brain had suggested, he fastens the seat belt, adjusts the rear mirrors, and honks, impatiently.

             time to go baby shopping !

at least nothing changed between them– she hoped nothing did. it’s like she saw him yesterday and they continued their most recent conversation. at least he disappeared when she was at her worst, she wouldn’t want him seeing that. he wouldn’t want to see the weaker side of hyejung, would he? not really anyone would be willing to watch someone go through mental breakdowns every hour without someone else telling them to just “shut up and move on.”

but that was none of his business, nor would he have asked about it. whatever he doesn’t know, won’t hurt. ignorance is bliss, so she won’t ask what happened when he disappeared. surely, if he wanted her to know then he would tell her. she quirks an eyebrow when he’s digging through his jaket and poof. now she’s covered in glitter. her eyes widened, how bold of him to make a move. she wanted to snatch the glitter–where the hell did he even get it? she coughs, sputters, and tries to get the glitter that landed in between the spaces of her eyelashes. “y’ain’t no doctor.” she huffs. “danny deprived. yeah right. i’ve been livin’ well.” with or without you. but it seemed too cruel– when was anything too cruel for hyejung? “no. i won’t let ya in. piss ya pants.” she mumbles, leaning against the door frame with her arms folded across her chest. “y’kid as in.. y’don’t have t’pee? ‘cos that’s great. we can jus’ talk like this. like ol’ buddies. chaps. mates.” she snorts. “wow, alright, alright.” she pulls a coat from the back of her door and grabs her keys. “ready t’go?”

🏈 」     HE ONLY HAS GOOD STORIES TO SHARE, surprisingly, because for whatever reason, life has finally given him the second chance he’s always longed for. hopefully, she too, feels the same way. he’d be damn well sorry if something terrible and/or heartbreaking happened in her life while he was gone. because then, nothing would make up for his absence. like she said, friend. what friend disappears out of the blue? but, no more of the weird thoughts. it’s time to catch up.

             “doesn’t glitter stay on your body, for days? happens to me all the time. hope you don’t mind walk around with pink glitter glistening against the sunlight.” he shrugs, stepping aside to make room.  “so, you’ve been well? how’s it been? how’s school? are you still getting into trouble?”

he was probably taken back a bit by her actions. after the incident happened, she tried to be more on the nice side rather than being on the side that pushed people away for being so stubborn and pessimistic. she wasn’t completely a nice person. she’s built up a reputation at the age of thirteen that she wasn’t going to let go. she wrinkles her nose, unable to explain how she felt at that exact moment. this fuck decided to show up to her front door after months of not appearing. she never saw him on the streets, didn’t see him at his job (as if she checked), didn’t see him at bars. her lip twitches slightly, thinking about how long it’s been.

it’s been too long.

🏈 」   EVEN THOUGH GUILT SWAMPS HIM, he chooses to maintain composure. a lot has changed, a lot has happened in his life, for the better, of course, but unfortunately, when life drives him off course, more than not, he ends up falling behind, shutting himself from society. it has happened when his parents abandoned him and his sister four years ago, and it happened again, recently. thankfully, nothing seemed to have changed. their friendship --- was where they had left off.

            asswipe. typical, typical thing to say, and it makes him laugh. “seeing how quickly i got you riled up, i must have been missed. must be danny-deprived, huh. very deprived. well not to worry, my dear, dear friend, i’ve got a solution!” digging through his jacket pocket, he pulls out a bag of glitter. must be his daughter’s, but that’s besides the point. this is the perfect solution. he digs his index and thumb into the small bag, and sprinkles the pink glitter at her face. “there. you’ve been danny-cured. all the danny deprived nonsense has been cured. you are CURED, and with that being said, are you not going to let me in or something? i’ve shed sweat and blood, traveling to this destination. i need to use your bathroom and would greatly appreciate a cold glass of water.” he closes the glitter package and stuffs it back into his pocket. “i kid. grab a jacket, and let’s go. i’ll buy food. i need updates.”

“y’fuckin’ dick. where have y’been?” hyejung scoffs, punching his arm in a playful way before pouting. “y’left me t’die. on my own. what kind of friend is that?” friend. she’s had to admit that he was one of the closest friends she’s had. he left before she even had the chance to say it, though. she snatches the parrot out of his hands, placing it atop her shoulder before covering one eye. “arrrgh. i fuckin’ hate ya. i hate your guts. i hate what ya did.” hopefully he doesn’t disappear again.

     NEVER EVER IN HIS DREAMS would he have imagined the day YOO HYEJUNG, aka the troublemaker, to play a role as a pirate. because the hyejung he knew months ago, would never have been this playful around him; simply, he was an annoying jerk around her. however, the change in her attitude had him amused. missed. she 100% missed him. missed him so much, she had to spit out the word, friend. his unexplained absence was inexcusable, and he rightfully knew that himself, so she deserved someone kinder, sweeter, but that was exactly something she wasn’t going to get.

     unfortunately.

     “listen, my friend.” so many things he can say; so many things he can do at this very moment! explain his absence, tell her she was missed, be friendly, buy her something to eat.. but --- he points to the parrot. “YOU’RE the parrot. i’m pirate, get it right, woman! have you already forgotten how i was honored the title? remember, king of seas... kings are handsome...” he trails off, a gentle smirk gracing his features. “i see, you still got a thing for punching innocent arms.”
