Tamara Cherie Dyson.
With her exceptional ability to create assertive paradoxes within her garments, and her unprecedented attention to structural detail whilst allowing her clothes to retain a playful charm, Tamara Cherie Dyson has become a fashion force to be reckoned with. After winning the celebrated title of Vodacom Durban July’s Young Designer last year, which draws nominees from across the country, her success as a fashion designer has continued to rise. Last month, Dyson, geared up for an internship in London with British fashion designer Dame Vivienne Westwood – an incredible feat for someone who has spent only a few short years in the fashion wilderness, and undeniably an opportunity “a million girls would kill for..”
What is your first memory of fashion?
Definitely playing dress-up with Barbie dolls with my best friend at 8 years old..
What else do you get up to in any spare time? Is there anything other than designing that you like to immerse yourself in?
Spare time is a bit of a luxury these days, but in between college, I style shoots and I am a bit of a blog junkie in the very early hours of the morning.
How would you define your style?
Messy-chic.
What is the most essential item in your wardrobe? And what is your most treasured piece?
During my time in London, I bought a beautiful coat from Cos, which became my everyday essential in the cold. I have a Bettina Liano dress I bought a few years back in Melbourne, Australia. I just love looking at it! (laughs)
Growing up, what were your style references?
I was a Spice Girls groupie in my younger years, so white platforms and pigtails ruled quite a few of my junior school years.
Who are your style icons now? And why?
I love both Kirsten Dunst and Kate Bosworth’s style. They contrast vintage classics and modern chic so well. They never look too overdone.
Which designers do you admire?
Internationally, the clean cut lines of Celine and the intense attention to detail of Alexander McQueen. Locally, Stefania Morland.
What are some of your career highlights?
Winning the Vodacom Durban July Young Designers Award 2011, and then most recently interning at Vivienne Westwood in London.
How was your experience at Vivienne Westwood? What did you learn?
It was an incredibly eye-opening experience to what the real fashion industry is all about. I met such amazing creatives, and had truly inspiring moments, especially London Fashion Week. I learnt an unbelievable amount, but most importantly, it made me realise what route I want to take in this industry.
Do you think your time at Vivienne Westwood will have a big influence on your work now?
It has definitely made me pay extra careful attention to detail, such as how garments are finished off, inside and out.
What is the best advice anyone has ever given you?
To stop fighting who I am and embrace it, only then will I truly excel in anything I do.
What is your enduring motto?
“We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We were born to manifest the glory that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. “
What are your ambitions for the future?
To keep learning and developing in life, wherever that takes me in the future.
