Already thinking ahead to next years Valerie issues lol, like the themes of each issue
I think I def want to do an issue on eating disorders / diet culture. And maybe one on periods and the shame and stigma around them could be interesting!! And I think one on separatism could be fascinating because I think a lot of women have a lot to say about that and I think having a space to listen to eachothers opinions and thoughts rather than just arguing about it would be nice.
Do any of you have ideas for themes of future issues? ^^
What would you like to see in Valerie's future?

The thing about choice is that if you believe you chose something you feel better about it. If you think men are going to leer at you either way, then choosing to wear a sexualised outfit feels like you’ve chosen to be leered at, and at the very least you feel like you have some autonomy. How many other women have said ‘yes’ to sex, because they thought it would be done to them anyway if they said no, and then they would have been raped? Whereas if you pretend you’ve chosen something freely, at the very least you have the illusion of autonomy.

the reason men want women to look so unnatural and bizzare, the reason they want them in layers and layers of makeup, insane amounts of surgery, completely covered and faceless and quiet, is that the less human you can make her, the more you can remove her from her natural state, the less guilt you feel for being a monster. If she is not human, what humanity do you need to treat her with?

I once saw someone on this hellsite say they were thankful to Suzanne Collins (author of The Hunger Games) for just "taking her fuck-ton of money and disappearing," unlike J.K. Rowling, who just had to open her big fat mouth and make herself unpopular by **checks notes** speaking up for the rights of girls and women.
And it's like, these people just keep telling on themselves. Yes, we know that you prefer it when women are silent instead of speaking up on issues they're passionate about and trying to make a positive difference in the lives of female people. We know that.

Like, beyond the fact that suggesting all homophobic men are secretly gay and in denial is still treating calling a dude gay as a way to "own" him, it's constructing a scenario in which gay people are the principal enactors of homophobic violence. Think carefully about who benefits from this framing.

Anon, you might enjoy Delusions of Gender by Cordelia Fine
Hey, I'm the one who asked you about gender. Thanks for answering and reblogging your other posts about the topic! I'm sorry I worded my question poorly. I'm pretty new to this stuff, so I appreciate learning from someone who has very clear and firm thoughts.
I think I just have a difficult time fully accepting that there aren't innate qualities that are different between men and women because socialization is so entrenched in every aspect of our lives, if you understand what I mean. Not that all women are innately nurturing, or that all men are innately violent, but in my experience I've seen specific patterns of behavior that make it difficult to believe there isn't also a biological aspect to it as well. I'm more inclined to believe both biology and socialization play a part, but I don't think just because we're biologically different that women's oppression is innate.
In any case, I'm still learning, so I'm open to new ways of thinking. Again, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions! :)
Biology and socialization do play a part in who you are, but let's think about the word "nurturing" for example. We use that word to describe women when they exhibit characteristics that men may also have, and not use that word for those men. That is gendering human qualities, and creating a connotation so that we differentiate what's actually the same between men and women. Additionally, women are expected to take on the childbearing labor, therefore have more opportunity (for lack of a better word) to perform the tasks we generally consider "nurturing", while often those task must be performed. A mom makes a pb&j sandwich might do it joyfully out of the goodness of her heart, or might do it out of necessity and frustration. But we frame those both as "natural" motherly instincts, because there is an interest to frame motherhood as a natural inclination of women. Meanwhile when a father makes a pb&j sandwich, people laud him as a good father and yet don't call him "nuturing." They call him responsible, a good father, maybe even soft. The drive to feed our kids is biological to a degree, and the method and means we do it are diverse and not equal, and there is someone who is expected to do it and someone who is lauded when they do it. Then we slap on words that describe the same thing to push a gendered narrative.

it’s so awesome when there’s a character who isn’t canonically bisexual but is undeniably haunted by the specter of bisexuality
