i saw someone mention the reason pink/rose feels like a fall from grace is because we're seeing her character arc backwards, when in reality she was already redeemed. i decided to try to put her story in order to get a better look.
-pink is created from white. she is the smallest and youngest diamond
-acts as a court jester, provides the other diamonds with fun and levity
-is fawned over, given special gifts and generally spoiled
-is otherwise confined to her room, alone, purposeless
-begins to bond with her pearl and the pebbles
-learns what the other diamonds do, wants to do the same
-asks for more responsibility, is either laughed at or ignored
-acts out by messing with the other diamonds' work, trying to make her own creatures, etc
-gets punished by being totally isolated in a small, dark room, sometimes for thousands of years, for "acting out"
-starts to feel unloved, ignored, trivialized
-begins venting her frustrations with destructive tantrums, continuing to demand recognition
-gets denied by yellow and blue over and over
-Jungle Moon
-goes to white directly, denied again
-damages her pearl irrepairably in her rage
-filled with regret and horror at her actions, decides to conceal her emotions now
-given spinel and the garden as bribery to behave
-after some time spent behaving, provided with a small colony of her own and a new pearl, being told by white: "dont break this one."
-pink barely associates with her new pearl if she can help it
-hates the colony, hates spinel, hates the garden: it all represents her biggest regrets and flaws
-pearl suggests visiting the colony disguised as a rose quartz
-pinks spark is lit. she sees beauty, love, freedom, things she thought she could never have
-she cant destroy this innocent, pure thing
-not again
-she and pearl begin to organize an elaborate rebellion
-at some point before or during this, pink abandons spinel, most likely not thinking of the consequences
-during this time also meets bismuth, is forged her sword
-fakes pink diamond's death, becomes rose quartz
-meets garnet
-starts the crystal gems
-at some point bubbles bismuth, unwilling to confront her about the breaking point
-the planet is blasted, and garnet, pearl, and rose are the only survivors
-spends the next few thousand-odd years on earth, leading a new life, meeting amethyst, helping humans, fighting corrupted gems, having flings with human men
-lion is revived, bismuth is stored in his mane
-rose meets greg and is taught what love and respect really mean
-rose gives her life to become half of steven, knowing she could never truly be a human being and change her ways, but still wanting to spread love and faith and hoping, one day, things will work out, even if without her
and thats why i love rose

Wow… WOW. Ok, i just watched the new eps and i loved them? I mean, YEAH, you could say that plot wise it doesn’t do that much, but characterization wise they were pretty interesting. But i want to focus on Steven, this new Steven, Teen!Steven.
First of, this pretty line from Little Homeschool:

“Knowing there is someone out there still hurting because of the Diamonds. Because of… My mom… If there is a change i could make it better, shouldn’t i try?”
LOL… Remember when the movie came out, and a lot of people said Steven was done trying to fix the mistakes her mom did? BS. And even if that was his intention during the movie, i dont think he would have been able to actually follow that thru. Spinel’s attack on Earth only rushed what was a natural event bound to happen. Steven went back to his old “fix everyones problems” ways… But he is different. He is more pragmatic now.
He keeps bottles with the Diamonds’ essence in his bathroom, he has phamplets with the sole pourpose of educating new gems, he stepped over Amethyst and forced gems to do other jobs they didn’t wanted to do… Steven is making the whole “fix peoples lives” thing something very unpersonal. He is taking it as his JOB. He is detaching himself from the people he wants to help and is starting to see them as just… problems to fix.
Case in point, Pink!Pearl.
Steven says so himself
“It doesn’t matter. I can fix it!”
and

“STOP IT! I cant deal with one more horrible thing she did, OK?! I dont wanna hear about it. I dont even wanna THINK about it. I just… want… TO FIX IT!”
Terrible. I mean, its a very understandable reaction, thats not the problem here. The bad thing is that Steven just KEEPS forcing his feelings down… Like, what does he do when the Rose Quartzes ask him if he likes them?

BITE HIS PILLOW!
He. Can not. Talk. About his feelings. Mister “why dont you talk to each other?” cant say whats wrong with himself?
WELL OF COURSE HE CANT… he never could. He could when he was younger but eventually, he realized that his family needed him to be strong to help them. And yeah, he wanted to help because he loved the gems and he is an empathic person, but he went down the hole so deep that now he is stuck in there
And there is Jaspers’ Speech, and i think this is the part that broke him:

“You never beat me on your own. You always were a fusion. You always had your friends. Because, you are NOTHING without them!”
BRUTAL. But also true. I mean, look at his face.Obviously, we know is not true, but its something Steven believes. He might not be PD, but he shares her fundamental flaw. SELF STEM ISSUES. Steven does not believe he is good enough. Sure, he has his moments when his confidence is higher, but he is always making sure to try his best, to prove he is a good friend, a good son, a good leader… A better person than HER. Case in point, his new Pink!Steven form.
The first two episodes, Steven was delighted to have found something new about himself. A new amazing source of power he can tap into. But then cames “Volleyball” and he starts to lose control of his form and he doesnt understand why… until this moment.

This when Steven realizes there is still something of PD inside him. Something HORRIBLE.
And thats what i loved the most about these new episodes… That all of these things i listed, all of those flaws…
NONE OF THAT IS NEW!
Steven has always have a bit of a Small name-Big ego personality. He has always had a tendency to get into other people’s business. He has always been insecure and trying to prove himself. He has always had that Martyrdom complex. He had always ate his feelings because he was too worried fixing other people’s lives.
Now, you could say “Hey, should Steven have learned his lessons by now? He is backpedaling in his character development!” And… you would be kind of right? I mean its hard to ignore that Steven should now better about certain things by now, but if we consider the in-plot explanation, it does makes kind of sense.
Steven has always had those issues, but he has been neglecting them because there were bigger stakes in the game. But now they are gone, and Steven has grown up but all his issues are STILL THERE. A very big part of the series is that Steven is an Empath fixed on solving every problem in the RPG of his life by following the Pacifist!Route. That is literally the whole show…
But this is a new series, with the same old Steven. Everyone has changed, but he still has issues to solve, and its SO refreshing to see the crew put Steven in a situation in which it is HIM who needs help.
And you know, the whole PINK!STEVEN think is clearly an analogy to Puberty. Steven is still discovering new things about himself, and he still has stuff to work out. He has to decide WHO he wants to be, now that he is no longer believing himself to be PD or RQ.
WHO is Steven Universe and WHAT does he want from the Future… THAT is the question of this series.
And i, for one, am LOVING IT.

(Also steven is so sarcastic now and its even more in-your-face than before and i love it)

This moment kills me. Steven is so unlike himself, so threatening, that Pearl immediately leaps into action as if she were fighting an enemy. It’s instinctual. Given a moment to think I believe Pearl would tell herself that the Steven she knows wouldn’t hurt anyone whether that’s true atm is up for debate and that his anger here isn’t actually directed at PP/VB but at his mother. But Pearl doesn’t have a moment to think. There is only a powerful, rage-filled gem, a helpless gem in the line of fire, and herself. And so Pearl does what her millennia-old warrior instincts tell her to do: prepare to fight.
This is a huge red flag for whatever is going on with Steven. Now that they’ve escaped the Reef and are back home I really hope they address it sooner rather than later.

Oh my god, the new SU Future episodes have put so much in context for me about Pink and her fear of confrontation. Why she lied to the Crystal Gems, hiding from her past, running away and abandoning Spinel… she wasn’t only afraid of being hurt herself, she was also afraid she would hurt them.
Pink had powerful destructive abilities that were activated by negative emotions and emotional confrontation, and had badly hurt someone she loved in the past. (Likely without ever meaning to, if Steven was any indication - the power activated simply because he was angry and hurting, not because he made any moves to harm anyone.) Pink was terrified that if she got into an emotionally heated argument that she might do it again, terrified that if she ever lost her temper, if she ever so much as raised her voice in a moment of anger or pain she could literally scar someone for life. She was so afraid that she bottled up and suppressed those feelings, and avoided any situation that might lead to her exploding at people she cared about, even if it meant lying, manipulating, or leaving them rather than risk ever doing something like that again.

The Tale of Steven - as told by...
In the newly released book ‘Steven Universe: The Tale of Steven’, we are told the story of Steven, and the gemstone on his navel. The book takes us through different perspectives - literally - by having us flip the book around in different ways to read the tale as told by White (upside-down), Rose (sideways), and Steven (rightside-up). These are the tales, without the images presented in the book. However, the text within parentheses is visual information key to the understanding of the book.

Once upon a time, there were four Diamonds. White, Yellow, Blue, and the littlest Diamond, Pink.
Pink was as silly as she was small.
She was impossible to understand, impossible to ignore, and impossible to control.
White knew better than to indulge Pink’s whims.
But Blue and Yellow spoiled her with treasures, listened to her nonsense, and enabled her terrible behavior.
Only White was immune to Pink’s ridiculous influence. It was up to White to keep Pink in her place.
One day, Pink, difficult as ever, ran off to another planet.
She foolishly thought she could escape her Diamond role by disguising herself as a lowly Rose Quartz.
She stubbornly stayed on the Gem-forsaken world— Amongst the grotesque life that grew rampant there—
Hiding from the Diamonds, hiding from her Homeworld—
And ultimately, hiding from herself, inside an unwitting creature.
It was only a matter of time before Pink came crawling back.
In a state more confusing than ever…
Desperate for White to correct her.
White knew Pink would never change , and no one on this or any other world would prove her wrong, but—
Once upon a time
(Steven and Pink Steven reunite and fuse)
He did.

Once upon a time, there was a wonderful Rose Quartz who wanted to tell her own story.
She belonged on a beautiful planet, amongst strange and whimsical creatures who treated her well.
It was there she fell in love and gave up her existence—
To have a beautiful half-human child.
Rose Quartz hoped with all her being that her child would grow up surrounded by love…
And kindness, and care…
And would never find a way back to her horrendous old home…
And never feel the way she had felt there…
And never be picked apart by the other Diamonds.
She hoped her child would somehow, someday understand what a difference it makes to tell your own story, and…
Once upon a time
(Steven and Pink Steven reunite and fuse)
He did.

Once upon a time, there was a kid named Steven Universe, who never really got to know his mom.
He was always hearing about her, and she sounded so amazing.
He knew she wanted to become human, and she wanted to become him, and that as long as Steven had her Gem they couldn’t both exist.
The more he learned about her, the more it started to scare him—
That she might be trapped inside her Gem, or that he might not be himself at all…
Though he couldn’t be sure, he had to believe—
Believe he wasn’t her, believe in himself, and—
Once upon a time
(Steven and Pink Steven reunite and fuse)
Once upon a time…
He did.
