The more I talk to Nader, a boy from Gaza whose campaign I have adopted, the more I see his despair. He is a 17 year-old with the weight of the world on his shoulders. He's preparing himself for the cold, and all he can do is hope he can get used to it. He feels like he's going crazy and he gets so frustrated he cries. Can you imagine living like this, as a 17 year-old watching your father waste away from cancer and starvation? I can't.

There is almost no food in northern Gaza.

Mahmoud Almadhoun and his family run a soup kitchen that feeds thousands of starving people for free. Acquiring in bulk means they can get more food for less and giving the food away alleviates the control food scalpers have over the market.

Please send them any money you can spare, especially if you have anxiety over picking between individual families that need help. The soup kitchen having more resources means they can feed more families and be bigger competition to food scalpers, driving down food prices over all.

I have what I currently call the package theory. The best movies, the most movie movies, present the viewer with a little package of a world invented purely for and contained within the film. This package is created through story, script, acting, cinematography and production design all working together in the same direction. The individual elements don’t have to be particularly good or original but they do have to be congruent with each other. All the actors are in the same world and treat it with the same seriousness.

It also has very little to do with our real world. I think it has to avoid what we consider ‘natural’ dialogue (snappy comebacks, irony, pop culture references) and if it’s set in the ‘real’ world, it has to be crafted impeccably to be the most platonic ideal of that real world rather than reflective of our own lives.

I think both bad movies can be packages and good movies can not be.

Most importantly, the creators offer this package to us with no apologies and no explanations. We can accept the gift or not but the gift does not suffer embarrassment at its own earnestness.

What do you think of this, the package says. I thought you might like it.

I think every film critic review needs a footnote called the “fun-o-meter” where they ignore everything they said in the previous paragraphs and have to answer objectively. put it on a scale. good good to bad good to bad good to bad bad. for example. did venom get a 30% on rotten tomatoes? yes. but watching sweaty tom hardy sit in a fish tank and eat a live lobster was VERY fun. some movies aren’t meant to win awards. they’re just meant to be a hoot n a holler
