One of my favorite tidbits about Oblivion is that, when Bethesda brought Patrick Stewart in to play Uriel Septim, they gave him this big 90-page booklet detailing the character’s history and background and motivations, and they were really worried that they’d gone overboard and given him too much.  Meanwhile, Stewart was delighted–he’s said that it was the best character prep he’d ever been given, and he wished more people would do that.

Something that’s always frustrated me is the opening sequence to Skyrim. It’s extremely long, provides multiple unskippable and jargon-filled information dumps, and forces you to make decisions about major factions in a way that seems to clearly favor you siding with one over the other even though the rest of the game spends a good chunk of time painting both factions as more relatively shades of gray at best. That would all be bad by itself, but after going through it all, it finally forces you to do it all again if you want to restart the game or made an error during character creation.
