{ Lukas paced through the library, reading his journal aloud to check how it sounded. Speaking the words helped him focus, and with no one else around—well, aside from Mal—it felt like the perfect time to practice. }

{ That calm was short-lived. }

{ His head snapped up at a sudden noise echoing from the mansion's entrance. Frowning, he tilted his head, then swiftly shut the journal with a snap and tossed it onto his bed. }

{ Crossing the room, he cracked open the library door and scanned the hallway beyond. His muscles tensed as Echo let out a sharp, unexpected bark. He turned quickly toward his pets. }

{ Winslow padded over and nudged his leg with a soft meow. Lukas glanced down, then addressed the small group. }

“You four, stay here while I check it out.”

{ With that, he slipped through the door and made his way toward the main entrance to see… }
