Odin is a trickster god who trickstered his way to the top of the pantheon and out of the trickster reputation.
He’s such a trickster that people don’t even realise he is one.

you kissed me once
with whispers of lavender
and pulled my heart from my tongue
and lapped love from my burning blue lips.
you held me tight
wrapped within seaweed that grew-
slick and glistening like oil-
from the holes in your satin gown,
and i loved every strangled second,
and i cherish each airless mem’ry.
your affections pepper my dreams:
sharp jags of bitter coral
littered among the dunes
thirsting for blood bitten
from the soles of feet
sore for pacing the safety of your thoughts
and hoping only to cross your mind.
you used to take my hand,
fingers clutching in furtive panic
‘round my greedy heart,
eager to feel each beat
pounding, pushing infatuation
into your palm,
filling every dusty corner
and every cobwebb’d crack.
you left me waiting at the pier,
lonely with the taste of saltwater taffy
and the ache of knowing
that if you asked me to do it all again,
i’d give my life
and wade into the waves
just to let you drown me one more time.

shutters flutter in the breeze
a gust brings ghosts to their knees
a shallow love, memories of
the places once we haunted together
huddling away from any weather
whether or not we could feel
the icy sleeting sheets and shrill
howling glacier-breath of death
as it ripped our lives from our lips
and left us cold and filled with static
our bodies forgot in the fog
and here we will remain, you and i
and at least we are not alone

questions from the psych unit
drift like downy feathers
brushing my lashes but failing
with each flap
to feel real enough to faze me
but the reality
of smashed wings
beaten against aviary bars
is these brilliant birds
with their broken spirits
who withhold their trauma and their tension
for fear of feeling small
inside the birdcage of a building
where they flock like injured doves
in the collective hope
that they’ll make it out bigger
brighter
and with their heads above water
long enough to wade to dry land
where they may once again manage
to fly
