Absolute girlboss. Went so far out of her way to take over the train so she could see her fiance again. Whilst initially filled with joyous whimsy, she is then filled with soul-crushing trauma (the death of her fiance) and nearly goes insane trying to get him back. She later realizes her mistakes and tries hard to undo them. Also she's a milf. I'm sorry.

my lesbian friends say she is a milf. also her story is very cool, a tragedy with grief leading her to do some bonkers stuff

No. 7 Sinner based on the chatacter from Wuthering Heights. Jacket and sleeveless British guy with bat. Quick temper, hates authority & the rich, no schooling, will cave in your skull without hesitation. Ultimately way more thoughtful and kind and smart than he appears. He’s just the most British guy I can think of. He’s eternally confused, in love with cars, and probably gay. Shout out to him!

Lynda Day:

Editor of the Junior Gazette, a newspaper by and for youth. 100% dedicated to getting the news out, even if it means working three hours before school, or spending the night at the news office. As demanding of herself as she is of everyone else. Her favourite colour is obedience and her favourite pastime is biting off dentists' drills – at least according to her sometimes boyfriend, Spike Thomson. Her main weakness is social situations, but a close second is thinking she may have caused a suicide. Her main strength is creating a functioning news team out of a disparate bunch of delinquents and nerds. Also, wrapping a certain cool-cat American around her little finger.

 I know a lot of people find Rose annoying but I love her. The idea of this extremely normal person who suddenly gets to go on an unimaginable adventure, gets obsessed with that feeling of excitement to an uhealthy degree, and then oops! now she's an extra-dimensional god being who needs to leave the plot forever lest she remove all the stakes, is just very interesting to me. I'm rotating her in my brain to this day. Also she just feels extremely british, she's the first character who came to mind when I saw this poll theme.

He was with me as I tried to learn Japanese.

Aled Last:

Probably most known for being a character in the Heartstopper comics, Aled Last is very quiet, but perceptive and extremely caring. He is also one of the protagonists in the novel Radio Silence which is a beautiful exploration of being a British teen going into university (and not really wanting to). He is often very closed off and it takes a long time for him to open up to the people he loves (classic British trait). He has a podcast series, voices it all (mostly) and creates music for it. His friendship with Frances is one of the most important depictions of a friendship in a novel to me and he makes me feel a bit insane.

Gwen Cooper:

She's the bisexual Welsh queen of my heart. Honestly though it is so rare to have a female character who's both the emotional centre of her story and who gets to be complicated, and dark, and make bad decisions, and yet keeps doing the right thing, no matter how hard it is and how much she loses, over and over and over again. More Gwen Cooper appreciation!

She lives in Wales. She left the police to join a secret alien hunting Institute. She is a bisexual disaster. She is fierce. She has the best good boy golden retriever like husband.

Arthur Lester:

This guy is continuously underground/falling off cliffs for no reason at all, it's just always happening. He has an eldritch entity in his head named John who stole his eyes and currently has control of said eyes, most of his left arm, and also his left toes. He's a piano composer. These two are constantly swearing and saying each other's names every five seconds. They're basically a package deal at this point. He's commonly headcanoned as aromantic. He's almost died several times. He was walking through a ruined city in another world with the intent to go through a gate to get back to Earth, and immediately abandoned the plan bc he heard someone playing the song he composed for his daughter on piano. They are regularly in situations where a possible solution is murder, and generally the eldritch horror is not the one advocating for them to kill someone, especially in the beginning of the story. While investigating the horrors, they came across a random baby, and both of them immediately decided they couldn't let anything bad happen to this baby and were just carrying her around for a bit. He bit off part of his own finger (technically it was John's finger). Early on, John says he has a cold, calculating demeanor and then when Arthur asks if he still has it way later he says Arthur looks like he'd be 80 pounds sopping wet. Also he's a private investigator in 1930s Massachusetts, how could I have forgotten. There's 2 eldritch gods relevant to the story, one of them wants him dead because John is a piece of him and he wants him back, and the other is watching what he does for entertainment.

Nia:

Welsh cat girl

Nia is one of my favourite characters ever. She's really funny and has a really fun dynamic with the other party members (especially Zeke I love their stupid name calling), and I love her character development. She starts off as an antagonist but ends up joining Rex and over the course of the game she finds out where her true family lies, growing closer to the rest of the gang and learning to accept herself and come to terms with her powers and past. She kinda goes through it because along with all the shit that happened in Xenoblade 2 she's the queen of Agnus in Xenoblade 3 and it seems like all her friends are dead and the state of Aionios (the world of Xeno3) is just. yeah. But she still stays strong and determined and was one of the masterminds behind the creation of Origin (big machine that's meant to save the world long story short if I explained the full lore we'd be here all day) and very dedicated to her cause. Overall she's super cool and I love her a lot :)

Bracket 2: Round 1, Match 1

Jonathan Sims:

They are the perfect tragic protagonist, pretty much doomed from the beginning but with a story so gripping you can't help but route for him and feel for him. No spoilers but his gradually developing powers are really cool and his descent is really interesting. Bonus points: he's canonically ace and has dated men and women.

He's asexual. He's biromantic. He's friends with his ex from university who runs a podcast talking about ghosts. He uses skepticism to cope with trauma and the horrors. He was framed for brutal pipe murder by his boss. When it was explained to Melanie, his ex's current girlfriend, she thought he had burnt someone to death with a smoking pipe because it seemed more in character for him. He got stabbed by the manifestation of losing your mind and successfully lied to his coworker about it. Said coworker, Martin, also had a crush on him, and he A) didn't know, and B) hated him, one reason being Martin had accidentally let a dog into the archives. He has severe arachnophobia. Martin doesn't know this for the first couple seasons, and continually tells him why spiders are important for the ecosystem. In season 2, after a woman filled with murderous worms invades the archives and Martin finds the murdered corpse of the Archivist before Jon in the tunnels below the institute, Jon gets incredibly paranoid that one of his assistants killed her. He makes a deal with Basira, a detective, that she'll get him as many of the recorded tapes found by her body to him as she can, and when he explains to Tim that the reason she was looking for him was he's "helping her with the investigation", Tim takes this to mean he and Basira are hooking up. When he first encounters the evil mannequin ringmaster, his first question is why she doesn't sound Russian. His second question is whether she's going to kill him. He was kidnapped by a circus for at least several weeks and forcibly moisturized. He was in a coma for six months after blowing up a wax museum filled with evil clowns, and only woke up because a random end avatar told him to. When he wakes up, he realizes he loves Martin, and finds that Martin has devoted himself to the concept of being lonely to protect the rest of the Archives employees. He was manipulated into starting the apocalypse. He went to America for a while, got kidnapped by a pair of monster hunters, and met a dead goth trapped in a book. He made a deal with a guy who steals people's bones to remove 2 of his ribs so he could use one of them to get a werewolf detective out of the coffin dimension of being buried alive. His solution before this was to cut off his finger and use that as his anchor, but it didn't work because he physically could not cut through his finger (it kept healing). He realized a shape shifter had killed and replaced his coworker, and immediately bought an axe to destroy the table it was bound in, which he didn't realize would set it free. He's the Ceaseless Watcher's special little boy. He's the antichrist. During and just before the apocalypse, he repeatedly eviscerates the horrors and villains with his mind. Martin finds this hot. During the apocalypse, when they come across the end avatar who woke him up from his coma, Martin asks Jon to kill him because he's jealous that he got Jon to wake up and Martin didn't. He's been kidnapped at least three times. He accidentally manifests tape recorders everywhere.

Laszlo Cravensworth:

An extremely British wife guy who is also a vampire. So British that he hates Britain (average British trait). He claimed once that he was Jack the Ripper. He is a very talented musician and composer, having written many popular songs (although not with the same lyrics). Has a passion for science and experiments on people for fun. Ultimate blorbo because he's mostly silly but has a fascination with humanity that drives lots of his actions (music, science, the friends he makes, etc.) which is very special to me.

Map of the UK because some of your comments about British geography are actually horrific (I'm not mad). The UK is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Island. This is why English, Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish characters were allowed in the tournament :)

And this is a slightly more detailed map that splits the countries into their counties and highlights some more cities for you to zoom in on if you're interested.

There are loads of different accents in the UK - as you can see it's made up of four countries which then split into loads of different counties, which can have very different accents and dialects with some really distinct features despite some places only being an hour up the road from each other. I could talk about accents forever so instead I will drop the link to this video which briefly goes over a few accents (mainly English ones) and has examples. It's a really interesting topic so I would recommend checking it out if you're unfamiliar!
