Gai and Kakashi are the healthiest Rivalry in Naruto
Tumblr media
In Naruto, rivalry is a key component of the show. Showcasing how it can uplift and destroy the characters, their bonds and inpact their psyche.
In most rivalries, there is an end goal in mind, where a victor must exist and someone must lose something for the other to gain:
Sakura Vs. Ino was about who could attract the attention of a boy
Gaara Vs. Lee is a classic battle of Talent Vs. Hard Work.
Obito Vs. Kakashi was a one sided duel about Obito trying to get others to see him by dragging Kakashi down.
Hashirama Vs. Madara is the climatic battle of two people born into war, and both trying to find a way to end the cycle and coming to two different conclusions
Naruto Vs. Sasuke starts as a classic battle of fighting the strongest kid on the playground for dominance, and slowly evolves into a battle of wills to decide the best way to lead the world.
Tumblr media
In most of these, friendships are built and destroyed over the rivalries. Some recover, others don't. But there's always an end goal in mind. Pulling the other down so the victor can stand above them. Proving their point with their physical prowess. Sometimes its about changing the perspective another holds, other times its proving ones worth, but no matter the battle, the end result is all about defeating their opponent to raise themselves in some way.
Which is where Gai and Kakashi's rivalry stands out amongst the rest. At first glance, it may be like Neji and Lee's rivalry, genius vs. hard work. Or maybe like Obito, people may think Gai is trying to defeat Kakashi to gain status, self worth or to improve his ego, but that's not the case.
Tumblr media
The thing that changes Gai and Kakashi's rivalry, is that theirs is about raising one another up, not tearing each other down.
When Gai was young, he wanted to meet Kakashi's standards, and so he started challenging him. Like other rivals on the list, he thought he could defeat his Kakashi to prove himself and strengthen his beliefs on hard work vs. Genius... until the day he saw Kakashi training by himself...
Tumblr media
Seeing how hard Kakashi pushed himself to stay on top, changed Gai's initial beliefs and made it go from wanting to take Kakashi down... to wanting to stand beside him.
Soon after, the challenges went from trying to defeat Kakashi, to a battle of understanding him. His challenges were no longer about just physical powress, but turned into games from eating competitions, to rock paper scissors, to silly dance offs. And with every new challenge, Gai learned more about Kakashi.
Wanting to win was still an aspect, the two do love to compete to win. But losing was no longer a consequence ro rheir core beliefs or self worth. Sure Gai added stipulations to his losses, but those to were to help self improve and regain focus. To make himself better to stay equal with his rival.
Tumblr media
More than that, Kakashi also had to learn to lose with Gai. In doing so... he learned it was okay to fail. That not everything would have devastating consequences if he was not the best. The show never dives into this, but for someone who was forced to become a child soldier, and who learned that failure could equal death at a young age, thst losing could mean a loss of prestige or position... to be able to be challenged by Gai, eventually start losing often... was to realize it was safe to fall. That he could lose a challenge and his friend wouldn't even mock him if he won. For soneone eho must have had a bunch of rivals who try to tore him down (like Obito) this must have been so refreshing.
In the end, their rivalry works so well, because its about raising the other up. Gai can help see where Kakashi is at mentally in their challenges and get him out of his head to help Kakashi relax by allowing him to play. Whwre at first Kakashi helped Gai improve his skills as a child, and then helped him push past his limits as an adult. To validate his friend's hard work and dedication, as well as to just enjoy time together.
Their makes them better people, helps them compete and check in with one another, lets them bond. They learn more about one another and their own short comings through their challenges, and it lets them communicate in a way without putting the other down. No other rivalry in the show does this. For them its about friendship, comradery, and being there for each other in a way no one else on the list is.
Tumblr media
Its one of the most beautiful things Kishimoto created in his works.

When I was little my mom’s meatloaf was my favorite food. But ONLY her meatloaf. I didn’t like anyone else’s, and she told me that she would teach me how to make it when I was older. And when I was like 19? She finally taught me, but she told me never to tell anyone else and I was like weird but okay
Anyway, she was super fucking homophobic and abusive to me when I told her I was gay, so here’s the recipe
4-6 lbs of Hamburger/turkey burger
1 pk onion soup mix OR ranch mix
1 TBs ketchup
1 Tbs spicy brown mustard,
1 Tbs bbq sauce
1 Tbs steak sauce
1 egg
mix, shape into a loaf in a big pan, and bake at 350 for 2 hrs (maybe 2 and a half if you’re feeling dangerous)
You can get almost all of these ingredients at the dollar store, and have leftovers if it’s just you. The leftovers make great tacos if (taco seasoning is also like a dollar). Enjoy your revenge loaf

Small fantasy worldbuilding elements you might want to think about:
A currency that isn’t gold-standard/having gold be as valuable as tin
A currency that runs entirely on a perishable resource, like cocoa beans
A clock that isn’t 24-hours
More or less than four seasons/seasons other than the ones we know
Fantastical weather patterns like irregular cloud formations, iridescent rain
Multiple moons/no moon
Planetary rings
A northern lights effect, but near the equator
Roads that aren’t brown or grey/black, like San Juan’s blue bricks
Jewelry beyond precious gems and metals
Marriage signifiers other than wedding bands
The husband taking the wife's name / newlyweds inventing a new surname upon marriage
No concept of virginity or bastardry
More than 2 genders/no concept of gender
Monotheism, but not creationism
Gods that don’t look like people
Domesticated pets that aren’t re-skinned dogs and cats
Some normalized supernatural element that has nothing to do with the plot
Magical communication that isn’t Fantasy Zoom
“Books” that aren’t bound or scrolls
A nonverbal means of communicating, like sign language
A race of people who are obligate carnivores/ vegetarians/ vegans/ pescatarians (not religious, biological imperative)
I’ve done about half of these myself in one WIP or another and a little detail here or there goes a long way in reminding the audience that this isn’t Kansas anymore.

Every criticism of Captain America; Brave New World means nothing to me, and here is why: My 11 and 15-year-old nephews, who are Black boys, loved Captain America: Brave New World. Every other review or criticism is invalid to me because when 15-year-old Billy said, “That was the best Captain America movie” and 11-year-old Manny ran around the house the next day saying, “I’m Captain America” that’s all that mattered. That’s all that matters. Two Black boys saw it and loved it. That’s important. Sam Wilson is important.
