aw wow susie, that’s you!

this sure does mean a lot to you, huh?
oh, this really means a lot to you, doesn’t it
man, it would really be a shame if,

if that prophecy wasn’t 100% confirmed to be talking about you,

if there was something that might indicate you might not be the hero of legend,

something like using completely different equipment?

if there was something that implied the story had been changed,

that you were maybe supposed to be a different character…
ah, well. i wouldn’t worry about it, susie. keep putting that stock into that prophecy! you’re definitely the hero of legend, you can definitely base your newly found self worth around the idea of that. i’m sure nothing will come up that shatters this illusion.
but, hey, even if you aren’t the hero,

i’m sure you’ll end up all right.

What's really evocative to me in all the new revelations and hints about Kris' true nature and intentions in Chapter 4 is the impression that... Kris is never free.
When they are free of our direct control, they are still not acting 100% of their real desires, they are following the orders of some evil Voice(s?) on the phone.
The ending seem to imply some sort of emotional conflict between them wanting to help out Susie, who is very dear to their heart, and following this plan which is probably not beneficial to her. A plan that they have to follow cause...
When Kris is not controlled by our very literal puppet-strings, they are instead controlled by the coercion and emotional manipulation of their mysterious benefactor. No matter which option they go with, Kris just cannot be free.

I REALLY like how chapter 3 has consequences for you not recruiting enough enemies. In chapter 1 it affects literally nothing and chapter 2 only has minor changes to castle town that I remember but in chapter 3 if you don’t recruit enough ppl tenna fucking dies. Susie can’t fix him bc no one liked us enough to help her find and patch him up. It really solidifies this being the turning point in the story from “fun dark world adventures” to “holy shit people are going to die if we don’t take this seriously”

Very funny that the Toby Fox Multiverse Games have twice pulled the musical-storytelling-tool of having two former-partners where one still has elements of the other's Leitmotif in one of their themes to symbolize their connection and the similarities that still remain despite their separation…
But Undertale did it with Toriel and Asgore.
Arguably the two most important Monster characters in the game, whose relationship is an integral part of the game's overarching narrative, and the tragic downfall of said relationship is heavily related to the game's core themes, who act as the 'Gatekeepers' for leaving the game's Tutorial and entering the true 'endgame' respectively, two tragic and heartfelt characters whose fights are so serious they literally shift the game into Serious Mode…
And then Deltarune does it again with these two fuckers.

chapter 3 secret boss: get s-rank at both of Tenna’s challenges to unlock a secret creepypasta video game in a dilapidated back room, beat the creepypasta video game by killing all the enemies undertale genocide style, re-enacting snowgrave, traversing a difficult dungeon and defeating an even more difficult boss to obtain the Shadow Mantle which is the only way you even have a fighting chance against the fucking Roaring Knight, which is to say that it won’t oneshot you on every attack but it still makes Jevil look like a walk in the park. Good luck depleting its massive hp bar while trying to weather fucking incomprehensibly hard attacks that reduce 2/3 of your party to -999 hp!
chapter 4 secret boss: if you play the piano real nice gerson’ll put on his undyne costume and teach susie to believe in herself :)

[ID: Deltarune fanart. Kris faces down the Knight, frowning as they think: "Oh, fuck. The Soul is cracked at this."
Ralsei smiles with relief, thinking: "Thank the heavens the player is cracked at this." Susie grins and makes a fist, thinking: "Thank the heavens Kris is cracked at this."
To Ralsei's surprise, Gaster appears behind him. Gaster rubs his chin and smiles, saying: "Very very interesting. You are cracked at this." End ID.] Thanks for the suggestion, @/anistarrose Original idea About what happens in a no-hit run

kris seeing through their hand in the shadow crystal. all the "severed hand"/"guy who wakes up without a hand" references in the new chapters. berdly having his entire arm paralyzed in the hospital if you didn't spare him in chapter 2. toby fox talking about his chronic wrist pain often preventing him from coding and playing. learning to navigate his disability and how working in a team makes developing games possible for him, even if they don't perfectly represent his vision. the piano as THEE representation of kris' freedom and individuality outside of their role as The Cage. the option to tell susie that Kris will keep playing if she learns to play piano too...
if kris loses their hand and deltarune ends with a 3-hand concert where susie plays alongside them i am going to walk straight into the ocean

Toby Fox: "Damn, this plotline I've written could potentially be read as polyphobic. If only there was someone who could help convey that the problem in this relationship wasn't the polyamory but just the fact that Rouxls Kaard sucks and nobody likes him"
