A young and inexperienced black-haired hero seeks for a purpose, struggles to keep their powers secret, feels lonely. Later, they are drawn to a fair-haired knight and realise that serving this knight in quests is the right thing to do and the destiny. They somehow feel they have met before. Only with the knight and for the knight the hero can express and deepen their budding magic. This bond will alter the hero's personality and the entire course of their destiny. Some will even call it corruption of their former true self.

This has most definitely likely to have been done before, but fic idea where Arthur falls ill because of some sort of magical curse in which he is seemingly unconscious/unresponsive (for ease of description, Curse of a Living Death) with the only way to heal him being to like go to some sort of magical place/to a sorcerer

Somehow, it's only Merlin who is allowed to take him. Maybe they're trying to hide from Uther, everyone else thinks it's contagious or something, I don't know

And Merlin just... Unleashes all his magic. Every little thing he uses magic for, purely just for the journey to go quicker so Arthur can be healed faster. Bandits? Dealt with immediately. Fire? Lit in a split second. The horse miraculously doesn't get tired

The twist is that the entire thing is written from the point of view of Arthur, who is actually just paralysed, rather than unconscious. The real purpose of the curse is that he has to see the world as if he isn't there. Probably some sort of symbolic vengeance of a magic user who had been wronged and wanted to make a statement. His eyes magically can't close, but his lack of response makes everyone think he can't see anything. But he can.

He sees Merlin using magic. The way his eyes light up gold. How he doesn't even have to utter a word at times as other sorcerers do when casting spells

At first, he is angry. Betrayed. Maybe even sort of scared. But then he realises (after facing the second lot of bandits on the journey) that Merlin isn't hurting him, isn't trying to kidnap him or kill him or— no, this is Merlin. Merlin who trips over his own feet. Merlin who looks away, displeased, as an arrow strikes a rabbit in a sport-hunting trip. Merlin who shouts in frustration when he loses the corner while changing the bed clothes

And Arthur realises that Merlin is no threat. Some magic— or at least, Merlin's magic— isn't evil. Between the worried glances at Arthur's condition, he senses something with Merlin that hadn't been there before. Relief. Contentment.

A sense of freedom; something so natural coming back to him, as if he was allowed to breathe again

Arthur doesn't tell Merlin what he knows when he is healed. But if he starts discussing magic in a more positive light... Well, maybe it would've been obvious to all but the oblivious dollopheads who roamed the castle, side-by-side despite their difference in status

i am haunted by the following scenario and i will make it y’alls problem: gwen finds out merlin has magic around s1-2 (whether merlin knows she knows is irrelevant).

even when she and arthur start a courtship she would not betray merlin and reveal his secret, absolutely not–EXCEPT merlin goes missing–like in A Servant of Two Masters? the point is that merlin is gone and arthur’s being pressured to stop the search. and gwen is like hey, no, no, I am pretty sure he’s alive. and leon’s like my lady we all saw him fall over the cliff. and gwen’s like yea no no I get that but you know merlin, he has a strong head.

like this poor girl is like arthur PLEASE look into um. those magic caves. and those rumoured magic sanctuaries. for absolutely no reason. i just have a hunch.

eventually Something makes gwen think merlin is dead too and then and only then does she tell arthur everything she knows because she thinks merlin should at least be recognised for all he did. and hey, maybe this will change arthur’s mind about magic; maybe gwen can do this one thing for her deceased friend.

and obviously, right after arthur processes her words and get confirmation from gaius, lancelot, etc., merlin walks in like damn who died 🧍🏻
