He small brow knits in confusion. She’s trying to get it, she really is.....but she can’t see where he’s getting at.

Why? Why did it have to be complicated? And why wasn’t it something she could fix? Why couldn’t the very guy who made her and her mama so happy just become a part of her family?

Why couldn’t she just have a daddy?

“..........Well.....that’s not fair....” She murmurs. She brings herself closer, wrapping her arms around his neck in a hug. “If it makes a difference.....I wouldn’t mind having you as a dad....”

     His heart is thundering so hard inside his cartoon chest that its visible if one were to look at his chest. Mortimer swoops down to pry the child from his legs, holding her up at eye level and leaning his forehead to hers. They’re nose to nose. Eye to eye. And he’s freaking OUT.

      He’s not worth being HUSBAND or DAD material! Look at him! He’s a cartoon REJECT for goodness sake! They deserve better. Both of them.

     Mortimer gives the tiny little girl a shake out of pure HYESTERIA. He’s so sorry, Lily.

             ❛   – I’m freaking out, Munchkin. FREAKING OUT.❜  

“……….Why?”

And it’s an honest question. She can definitely see the panic in his eyes - the pounding in his chest. It’s hard to miss from this close, shake or not. She reaches out and grips his face in her paws gently, as if to steady the both of them.

“We’ve loved ya for a long time, right? Ya think that’s just gonna…..go away?”

     Her paws press to his cheeks and Mortimer freezes in his excited state. Lily’s presence is calming and is so fundamentally appreciated. His black eyes grow soft, a frown curves at his lips but he stares back at her. Mortimer even leans his cheek to the child’s palm, sighing through his nose in defeat.

        He gives a shrug of his shoulders and a nervous swallow in his throat. 

            ❛   – … Stuff gets … complicated, sweetheart. Y’know? ❜   He finds himself wanting to censor himself. Lily’s just a child. It’s not fair to her if he just dumps all of his anxiety and worry on her. It’s hardly just. She doesn’t need that. … But, yet… He wants to share. Lily’s opinion is important to him. More important than most people’s.

José takes a violin out of his pocket and gets some typical Sad Violin Music playing. He lets the instrument float in midair and continue playing by itself without his input. He drops to his knees in front of the child.

“Please! I beg! I love Lily! Be Lily! Do not try to be José, be Lily!” The wailing of the violent compliments his pleas.
