Random shit in my yard & their magical/practical uses (with pics)
Disclaimers:
1. I am not an expert. I just Google stuff.
2. Nature will try to kill you, please research and stay safe around unfamiliar plants. Don't just randomly eat/touch/use plants you don't know.
3. This list is focused on East/North America, but pLEASE make a post for your area if you want to!
4. I have attempted to cite my sources but sometimes I be slacking. If you see misinformation or plagiarism in my post, pretty-please bully me & I'll fix it
5. Editing in new plants every time I get home from work :)

Plantain
(Broadleaf Plantain, White Man's Foot)
Both a helpful plant and a wild indicator of colonization in my area, Plantain is Nature's swiss army knife of a plant. When made into a salve (my mom has done this for forever) it can help alleviate poison ivy, burns, bug bites, sunburn, and rashes - as well as having fully edible leaves. Have a snack.
Plantain was one of the first invasive species to cross the Atlantic with white colonizers, and became basically synonymous with their arrival. It's believed to have been brought in for medicinal uses, but it's borderline invasive in my area at this point.
For magical purposes, it can be used as a representation of its soothing and healing properties. It is invasive and Plantain's historical context makes it useful for ancestor work (at least 4 me).
Lil to no sources for this because my family has fucked with this plant forever
Tumblr media
Acorns
These little babies are great luck! And, have the added benefit of being edible**!! I don't know about anyone else, but my Oak tree is going fucking nuts this year. I hear these guys slamming my patio constantly.
Magically I think they're fantastic for protection and good odds. I often pick one up and drop it off at my altar as a little gift. Ground up acorn shells are also a nice addition for spells that need an added kick in your favor. If you have more acorns than you need by spring, consider letting them back outside to germinate.
**Acorns have tannins that can be toxic for consumption so they have to be prepared appropriately or they can make you extremely sick. This is through a process of soaking the acorns repeatedly and boiling them (called leaching). Acorns come in a variety of tannin levels, and can taste anywhere from sweet (low tannin) or bitter (high tannin). After leaching the tannin, acorns can be eaten as-is or turned into flour.
**Some acorns can be infested with lil worm dudes. It's recommended to avoid those. Look for holes in your acorns.

Ground Ivy
(Creeping Charlie, Gill-over-the-ground)
This lovely weed is abundant, invasive, and multifaceted. For healing properties, Ground Ivy is historically suggested to be used for sore throats, coughs, and respiratory infections. For more magical properties, it is associated with divination, clairvoyance, and improved perception, as well as protecting from psychic attack. Folk magic thinks this plant is dope because there's a ton of old rituals/spells/old wives tales about this.
This plant is EDIBLE but shouldn't be consumed in large quantities or by folks that are pregnant/breastfeeding. It is typically consumed as dried herbs infused in tea or soup.
This is another plant that crossed over the Atlantic during colonization in my area, and it's actually considered extremely invasive in my area - an excuse to pick a little extra.

Yellow Woodsorrel
What a fuckin babe of a plant. Yet another critter associated with good luck, love, and protection. This is also the first plant in this list that is native to my area! It is a fantastic survivor - this pot initially had a foxglove plant that died and the sorrel popped up in its place and has thrived ever since.
Proposed uses are for fever and stomachaches, but it can be applied topically to irritated areas as a soother. My mom also uses this for yellow/orange dye!
This is another plant that is edible in small amounts, but contains an acid that is upsetting in large quantities. Consider it "garnish food".

Poison** Ivy
I am literally deathly allergic to this! But this is a patch that lives right outside and I do see this dude everyday. I would not recommend anyone handling this plant for any reason, but even historically Poison Ivy has had its uses.
Indigenous people used poison ivy for treating snake bites, ringworm, and warts - and it can also be used to make dyes. I would seriously caution against this and use any number of the safer methods available unless you really know what the fuck you are doing (poison ivy really has almost killed me & ruined my 3rd grade picture day when I got it on my FACE)
In witchcraft it seems some folks have reported using it as a representation of strong protection or poison. **But since I truly need medical attention every time I interact with this plant, I'm much happier leaving it alone, and I recommend for most of everyone to do the same.
"Leaves of three, leave it be." We love a queen with strong boundaries.

To Dry Plants at Home
I generally prefer to dry the homies out to keep them unmoldy and safe for use all year -
1. Pick some plants that won't kill you
2. Lay on a baking sheet
3. Put in an oven with ONLY THE OVEN LIGHT ON. Do NOT turn on the oven
4. Forget about them
5. Put them in a fun container of your choice
6. Now you have dried plants

Threshold Theory
Introduction
When first stepping onto the long winding path of witchcraft and mystical understanding it can be very intimidating, especially when it comes to casting your first few spells. The catch is that designing and casting spells is the only way to advance forward in your practice. It's a case of knowledge Vs. experience. Sadly, there isn’t much in the way of educational media on the topic of spell design, magic theory, and casting processes. This causes most practitioners to turn to Wiccan or Ceremonial sources for their initial research, neither of which are viable foundations for a well-rounded, effective and efficient craft.
Trinity of Spellcasting
Intent, Headspace/Focus, Passion are the cornerstones of spellcasting. These elements create the network or threshold in which spells pass through to their target. These concepts are also the root of what constitutes a spell. Intent is the designation of the target for the spell. Headspace is the sight in which the spell is aimed. Passion is the fuel that fires the spell towards the target. Without pure intent, the spell will apply broadly, lowering its potency and lead to potential unwanted side effects.  Without a honed headspace, the spell will flicker out or lead to unpredictable results. A lack of Passion will cause a spell to be weak, ineffective, or latent.
Spellcasting Process
Before casting a spell, there are some preparations to be made, especially when first starting out.
Decide on what spellcasting method you’d like to use.
Find and gather any representations, correspondences, and environmental boons for your spell. (Enviromental boons being things like candles, music, incense, or a physically clean space.) If you are using incantations, be sure to memorize them to the best of your ability.
Set aside time and energy for casting. Try to ensure that you will not be interrupted.
Cleanse all tools and components that are going to be used.
Enter into a state of gnosis or trance.
Prepare your subtle body and energetically prepare all tools and representations.
Take your actions for casting, being sure to consciously do energy work as you do.
Calm or center yourself and do a physical movement that helps take you out of the headspace. (Ex. snapping, clapping, jumping, ringing a bell, etc)
Cleanse yourself, tools, representations, and the space.
Beginner Friendly Spellcasting Methods
Here are some methods for casting. They can be used in any combination, if desired. I often use all three in my spells.
Sympathetic Casting: Method of casting through items, herbs, crystals, taglocks, etc that are representative of your target, headspace, passion, and correspondences. These items create a mental network of concepts in order to cast.
Energetic Casting: Utilizing energy work to build constructs that contain all necessary components for a spell and then delivering it to the target.
Gestures: Using gestures to program the naturally existing energy into the components for a spell before delivering it to the target.
Intent, Desire, & Goals
Intent and desire are very different concepts. Intent is an inner truth, while desire is something that is wanted. Goals are an expectation of an outcome. For example, I am vehemently against capitalism and the notion of another’s loss for my benefit. Because of this inner truth, I struggle immensely with casting money magic, no matter how strong my desire is. No matter how clear my goal is.
Headspace, Aesthetics, & Visualization
Witchcraft and spellwork cannot be reliant on visualization and aesthetics. They are useful tools for constructing a strong headspace; but, using them alone will result in a spell not working, being ineffective, unpredictable, and/or weak. Using aesthetics to build yourself up will result in your spells working much better. Visualization isn’t energy work, but a tool to aid in planning and casting a spell, much like a wand. Aesthetics are an environmental boon. It helps build confidence, and assurance.
Focus, Trance, & Gnosis
Focus is another word for headspace. When spellcasting, trances and states of gnosis can be extremely useful practices. Trances may be induced with *substances, music, self-hypnosis, etc. Trance makes it easier to be of one mind about the spell you’re casting. Gnosis is a meditation-like state in which one embodies the very concepts that make up a spell. In a state of gnosis you become the working, allowing the mind to become of a singular essence. *-I am not suggesting using substances, nor condoning it. Merely stating that it is possible and is used by some practitioners.
Passion, Channeling, & Mental Health
When casting, it is in good practice and easy to get swept up in whatever emotions are involved in your spell. Emotions are channeled from the caster into the essence of the spell, empowering it. Depending on the working, this can be unhealthy or even dangerous if not done within reason and self-awareness. Channeling certain emotions can lead to triggering trauma responses or even cause trauma. Remain mindful of yourself and what emotions, memories, and/or actions may lead to worsening or feeding into mental-illness.
The Importance of Keeping a Spell Log, Critical Thinking & Objectivity
Especially when taking your first steps, keeping a log of your workings will allow you to remain objective and aware of your past casting. If a spell backfires, or has unwanted results, having a detailed log of your workings can make the canceling process much easier. Keeping a log will also aid in studying your craft as objectively as possible. Recording an estimation of when the spell should take effect, the specific goal, and qualifications of success will allow you to judge whether a spell was successful or not. When a spell isn’t successful it becomes a learning opportunity. Figuring out which components worked, what processes could be improved, etc. will help advance your craft rapidly if you cast regularly. When doing these studies, you are conceptualizing aspects of magical theory, or a critical approach to magic.

Anyway here's my opinion of the day:
If you only study witchcraft, you're not going to be the best witch you can be. If you're going to use herbs, study botany. If you're going to use meditation and mindfulness, study theraputic methods like DBT and CBT. If you're going to use astrology, study astronomy. If you're going to use cooking and baking and drinking, study gastronomy and mixology. If you're going to use crystals, study geology. If you're involving paganism that has its roots in a particular time and place, study their histories and cultures. If you're a technowitch, study computer science.
Science and magic aren't opposing one another, they work hand in hand. Only by truly understanding the world around you can you utilise it to the best of your abilities. There gets to a point where cutesy little affiliation lists and emoji spells on Tumblr isn't going to help you any more.

🔥 Fire Safety Tips — For Witches 🌞
I just want to share some of my tips, as someone who has been practicing witchcraft for almost 20 years, for working with fire (as it relates to safety):
🔥 Buy a cauldron : I use mine for burning herbs, incense, candles, paper, fabric etc. I have one with just salt in it that I use to burn my small tapered candles and incense. It’s one of the most useful tools in my practice.
“Can Salt Burn? No, salt does not burn. It can melt at an extremely high temperature (800°C/1472°F), but this is unlikely to happen in everyday surroundings. Salt is made up of sodium and chloride, which come together to form a highly reactive bond.”
🔥 Don’t burn candles for more than 4 hours : Even if you’re in the room the entire time, it’s recommended that you don’t burn a candle for longer than 4 hours.
“If you burn your candle for more than 4 hours at a time, carbon will collect on the wick, and your wick will begin to "mushroom." This can cause the wick to become unstable, the flame to get too large, your candle to smoke, and soot to be released into the air and around your candle container.”
🔥 When burning things like paper, in your cauldron, fill the bottom with sand first : I’ve found that it helps avoid any flames from getting too high or out of control.
“Because its primary constituent is silica (SiO2), which is already oxidized, sand cannot burn. This is why it works as an effective firefighting method, which can extinguish fires by cutting off the oxygen supply and absorbing flammable liquids.”
🔥 Make sure that you triple check that nothing in the immediate area of any open flame is combustible or flammable : This means don’t burn something on a plate that’s sitting on an alter cloth lol. Or don’t spray anything into the air (like perfume or air freshener) around an open flame.
Be safe witches :)

Superstitions!
The following list are some of the superstitions that I’ve heard or learned about over the years, in no particular order: • Throw rice in the air to make it rain • Carry a potato during winter to ward against colds • Smell dill to get rid of hiccups • Lay thorn branches by your doorstep to keep evil away • Place chips of cedarwood in a box with coins do draw money to you • Hang seaweed in the kitchen to ward off evil spirits • Burn allspice to draw money, luck, and healing • Place a piece of cotton in a sugar bowl to draw good luck to your home • Scatter chili flakes around your house to break a curse • Scatter salt/sugar to purify a room • Put a pine branch above your bed to ward off illness • Carry a chunk of dried pineapple to draw luck • Ask an orange a question before you eat it, then count the seeds. Even # = no. Odd # = yes • Toss oats outside your back door to ensure beautiful crops/plants • Place lilacs around the house to rid unwanted spirits • Add salt to bath for purification • Write your sigils on stones and carry them with you • Put sigils on medication bottles to help quicken their efficiency or for added healing benefits • When guests come over, light a white candle by the door; it will take their negative energy and purify the home. • To get rid of guests overstaying their welcome, turn any broom in your house upside down (bristles up) • Toss salt on the front porch every Friday for good luck and prosperity • Carry a blade of grass to increase psychic power • If something or someone is bugging you, write it on toilet paper, wipe, and flush it down the toilet

Oh great witchstorian, I bring to you an offering of tea and coffee and the promise of "I owe ya one" in return for an answer to a question of mine:
Do you know what that big deal about "Celtic astrology" is? Which group did it come from? Where's the rest of the context necessary to understand it? Or was it created recently and then applied backwards?
~Jasper from @jasper-pagan-witch
Ohhhhh THAT.... -claps on the hat-
Okay so, here's the thing. The ogham letter calendar? That exists. We have evidence of it dating back to the single-digit CE years. That's just how some Celtic peoples marked their year.
The Celtic Tree Calendar setup we see today, particularly the mapping of the tree calendar onto a "zodiac," is an entirely modern invention. It was invented by Robert Graves, yet another contribution to modern paganism from his novel, The White Goddess. (Honestly, I don't know how anyone can look down their nose at pop culture paganism when so much of Wicca and nondenominational paganism based upon Wicca can trace its' roots - pun fully intended - back to fiction and poetry from the 1940s.)
Graves was one of those people who was REALLY into trying to figure out what the ancient Druids were up to, and he made an attempt to figure that out by charting the mythology of Ireland, England, and certain parts of mainland Europe and the Middle East. One of the theories he put forward in The White Goddess was this idea of a tree calendar that more or less followed the same model as the Greek zodiac we're all familiar with from our daily horoscopes.
Now, witches, pagans, and New Agers just LOVE a good zodiac, and while there are many ways of casting a horoscope or calculating a birth chart, the systems do not always overlap or work in the same ways. But since when have details mattered when you can have a tree instead of a constellation for your birth sign, or a "Native American Moon Zodiac" infographic that just looks so cool and free-spirit-y on your Facebook page?
So yeah. When you see anything referring to a "Celtic tree calendar" that presents the idea as an astrological system? Completely modern invention.
Is it fun? Absolutely. Is it a neat thing we can do if we want? Sure.
Is it real in the sense of being created or used as an astrological device by pre-Christian Celtic pagans? Not even remotely.
Hope this answers your question!
