stede, used to being mocked by showing what everyone around him considered an embarrassing softness through things like picking up flowers, waking up one morning in his new home to ed waiting for him to wake up with a bunch of flowers, all excited both about giving them to stede but also about showing him the place where he got them so stede can pick up as many flowers as he wants, no judgment, no mocking him about it. ed had put the flowers together using a piece of string and, once he has put the flowers in a vase, he takes the string and playfully ties it around stede's ring finger, he doesn't ask anything just locks eyes with stede for a moment, and it still feels like a promise of forever
