Underrated element of where Jiang Cheng is re: wwx after everything is that they always had a sort of dual relationship. Two different relationship premises, superimposed on one another.

There's the one where they grew up together, as close as brothers, beating each other up and complaining and being one another's closest companions, sharing a bedroom as kids and eating at the same family dinner table, actively encouraged by Jiang Fengmian to interact as equals.

And then there's the one where Wei Wuxian was in service to Jiang Cheng's family. Not as a servant--Jiang Fengmian absolutely refused to do that, even if he couldn't adopt him. But as a disciple of Jiang Cheng's father and recipient of his charity, as Jiang Cheng's future right hand and most trusted subordinate.

It's a vertical relationship, intimate in its own way but with very strict expectations about what obligations flow in what directions; they are not identical and reciprocal as between friends and equals.

(It's my opinion that Jiang Fengmian's core deal was a deep-seated discontent with the hierarchies he was at the top of, without access to any way to actually deconstruct them or even coherently articulate his opposition. Wei Changze was his dear friend, and no one thinks that's a good enough reason for him to treat Wei Changze's son like his own, because Wei Changze was also his servant, and you can't make that circle square. That's not a way you're allowed to love.)

Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian were like brothers; Wei Wuxian served Jiang Cheng.

The personal relationship was always the most important one. To them, in their hearts. But it was the other one that was real, that had weight in the world.

And it's important to understand that neither can be held up as more factual than the other, even though they conflict. Both relationships existed, and had power.

So then when Jiang Cheng chose to hate Wei Wuxian and articulate his grudge against him, he chose to do it in the language of fealty. Because as far as he knew, his case there was secure, watertight, and it wouldn't expose him emotionally or politically.

And those are the terms in which he's been condemning him all this time: for abandoning the Sect, for ingratitude, for lack of loyalty.

For fuckups, too, and poor judgment, but some of that now turns out to have been justified and some of it was mostly the fault of enemies behaving badly, or even Jiang Cheng himself allowing himself to be pushed into making unworthy choices.

And it was all for his sake.

The thing, the thing in my opinion, about what Wei Wuxian did, about the core transfer and his silent self-destruction around keeping it secret, is that that is a hideous thing to have done between two people who love each other, as an act of love. Beautiful, but awful. As the man who was like a brother to him, Jiang Cheng has a great deal of standing to object to it.

But as an act of vassalage, it's basically perfect.

If Wei Wuxian were only what he formally was to Jiang Cheng, if he is interpreted through a lens of fealty and obligation, he did exactly what he should have done, and went beyond what duty actually required. And went to his death silently, allowing himself to be judged, taking all the burden on himself rather than let harm come to his lord.

Like, obviously Jiang Cheng was harmed by the part where Jin Zixuan got manslaughtered and Jiang Yanli walked into the line of fire in situations where Wei Wuxian was resorting to violence and probably shouldn't have, but those are one step removed from the core issue. In terms of Wei Wuxian's intentional choices around Jiang Cheng himself, at the times he was feeling betrayed and abandoned Wei Wuxian was in fact being impossibly, poetically loyal, an absolute cliche about it.

But only in terms of the hierarchical form of their relationship.

Which means that even though Jiang Cheng has a lot of reasons to still be mad at Wei Wuxian, his actual complaints that he's centered for thirteen years are basically wiped out by the revelation of Wei Wuxian's sacrifice.

Wei Wuxian was in fact doing the tragic hero loyal vassal thing, which very much includes being misunderstood and slandered by the world. (Chenqing as a name choice absolutely references this expectation, and the idea that Jiang Cheng specifically will never understand that Wei Wuxian was trying to help him first and foremost all along; he is not subtle.)

The debts Jiang Cheng has been spitefully calling in and considering defaulted were already long paid.

So if at this point Jiang Cheng keeps pursuing that same line of rhetorical attack, now that he knows, he'll be putting himself morally in the wrong, and he knows it. But if he pivots to something else, he'll both be signalling the shape of that secret to the entire world and looking like a prize idiot.

Which is already how he feels.

To actually address the remaining grievances between them, which are considerable, would require releasing those safe, open grudges to Wei Wuxian's face and then reclaiming him as a loved one. Which is, one could fairly say, more than anyone could expect.

Which is why Wei Wuxian told him he didn't have to.

Which leaves Jiang Cheng at something of an impasse.

#jc inherited the worst traits of his parents #and even after war #death and “betrayal” he still has less self awareness and self reflection #you can dissect him till the cows go home but to me he's so unlikeable #every time ppl wax poetic about the “brotherhood” between jc and wy #it reminds me of the “love story” between sally hemmings and Thomas jefferson #sprinkle some holy water on JC and send him on his way🤷🏾‍♀️

Hear A Song This Deeply by so_shhy

Did I get everything I wanted to done for Binderary this year? Ahahahaha no. Life intervened and I most certainly did not. But you know when I DID finish books? Binderary 2023.

The typeset for this fic by @soshhy was a surprise gift to me from the inimitable @teleportbooks in the @renegadeguild 2022 exchange event. They know how much I love a good MDZS modern-with-magic AU! This is a singledad!WWX Wangxianfic, with some really creative worldbuilding around musical cultivation, and some great Lan brother character dynamics.

The cover is lokta mulberry fibre paper, and I do love the effect of using the raw edge overlapping the book cloth spine. Scrapbook paper endpapers came from a random pack scavenged out of my wife's art supplies, title and spine stencilled with gold acrylic paint.

Look at that typeset! Gorgeous. Thanks, E. Hyde!

What I Read This Week: 06/01/2026

I am a librarian, and unrelated to stereotypes about my profession, I do read a metric shit-ton in a week. Most of it is fanfiction but hey, I thought maybe it's time I share my reads?

This is what I read this week:

1 This time, together! by danny16doc (157, 858)

Summary: Wei Wuxian thought he had finally found peace—apparently not. The world just couldn’t leave him be. Once again, they came after him for the same ignorant, foolish reasons: he was too powerful, too arrogant, too uncontrollable.

They had pushed him to the edge once more—but this time, he wasn’t alone. If they couldn’t adapt to the new world, so be it. He would tear down their reality and rebuild it anew. But this time, things would be different.

Time travel fic! SO GOOD!

My heart weeps for a character I didn't expect to cry about

this was absolutely so heartwarming. I love the way the time travel mechanic worked, and I adored the ending our boys got.

10/10

2. not every haunting is for horror by Cinaed (32, 884)

Summary: When Shang Qinghua and Shen Yuan, popular online ghost hunters, decide to break away from their corporate overlords and start their own small company, they reach out to Shen Yuan’s old teacher who’s renting out his basement at a suspiciously low price. The reason for the cheap rent quickly becomes clear: Shen Qingqiu’s house is haunted by a ghostly presence he refuses to admit exists....

I went into this expecting it to be a good old haunting ghost busting team; what it did do was make me cry! What the heck!

Shen Jiu and Yue Qi will never not be a sad story and this one was worse than canon.

The ending is happy (but a little weird- affectionately) and I adored it

I almost wish this was a longer fic so I could get more into the universe! good read

3 afraid of changing (i've built my life around you) by TheGreatSwordSwallower (39, 251)

Summary:

Now, Wei Wuxian will never admit to this, but Old Man Lan tends to be right one way or another whenever he points out Wei Wuxian’s mistakes. Terrifyingly accurate.

So when he claims Wei Wuxian’s regular wet dreams and morning woods have managed to spawn a baby from the stars above — based on the many cautionary tales he’s somehow perused before — Lan Qiren is, unfortunately, correct.

“Congratulations, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji! Here goes your baby! Fresh out of the oven. Please water and feed regularly. Do not forget to pray. Best wishes! :)”

Wei Wuxian goes still.

or: A baby arrives in a basket in the middle of Wei Wuxian's dorm room in the middle of the night, addressed to one Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji and they...try and live with it.

Omg the first fic that ruined me emotionally this week what the fuck. (I loved it)

4Think of the Children by SingingInTheRaiin (34, 428)

Summary: Shen Qingqiu was not the one who pushed Luo Binghe into the Endless Abyss, and in fact would have been willing to follow him down if he had not been stopped by Without-A-Cure. He would do anything to get Luo Binghe back... and yet suddenly chooses to disappear from the cultivation world instead.

When Luo Binghe finally emerges from the Abyss, his first goal is to track down his wayward shizun. If he accidentally implies that he has children in need of a teacher, then he'll just have to roll with it until he can figure out what caused his shizun to flee, and how to convince him to stay.

Shen Qingqiu is so smart, but so stupid

This is such a mess LOL Luo Binghe is also an idiot

it works out- but damn so much melancholy and yearning

5 An Old Cardboard Produce Box for a Cradle by julomaiboulomai, mischiefseven (25,755)

Summary: "Wei Ying sits back from his labour and looks at the product of his work with satisfaction. She could use a face and some clothing, but her proportions aren’t too bad. All in all she’s a convincingly sweet doll. Mostly, anyway. He smiles, a little wry, down at the little figure resting on his worktable; she’s as uncanny as anything else that came out of the soil of the Burial Mounds, really. That just means she’ll fit right in."

Wei Ying makes a meimei for A-Yuan. Things progress differently from there.

I adore fix-its fueled by Wei Wuxian's child/ren. This is the fastest fix it ahaha I loved it, it was incredible sweet

Lan Wangji said- this is my husband, fight me - and I love that for him

Wei Wuxian said- ahahaha for sure- wait shit, we are actually married though???

Cute, adorable, loved it.

6 in a dream, i was home by thelastdboy (25, 250)

Summary: After he learned of Wei Wuxian's death, Lan Wangji dragged his broken body to Yiling. Deep inside Luanzanggang, he encountered the ghosts of the Wen Remnants. They revealed that someone had been trapped inside Luanzanggang and that Wei Wuxian had worked to save this person. Having nothing left to lose, Lan Wangji poured his remaining spiritual energy into an array Wei Wuxian had drawn before his death.

When he passed out from exhaustion, Lan Wangji hadn't expected to wake again, but he did. However, he wasn't in Luanzanggang anymore. Instead, he was back in Gusu. He was also a teenager again.

Cute little time travel fix it. BONUS! Wei Wuxian's parents live!

I wish this was so much longer because I desperately wanted the domesticity of wangxian - they are the cutest.

Solid little (for me) fic!

7 Baba and babo by runrecord (66,749)

Summary: One day, Wei Ying is worried sick how he will pay bills and feed his son. The next day, he finds himself as Lan Zhan’s housewife. Is this something their little group of three can work out and go ahead with? But what seems like a crack idea at the start with an unspecified future might, in the end, completely turn their world upside down in the most wonderful ways. Or: The exact flavor of Wei Ying Lan Zhan goes for in this fic is sexy yet troubled single father Wei Ying. A story of love and found family in five parts.

This was such a wholesome story!

You can tell the author might have been younger or maybe newer to writing when they did this, but as the story progresses they really grew into themselves!

8 Wei Ying's Knight on Call by dragontrappedinhumanskin (20, 818)

Summary: When Wei Ying unknowingly drunk dials a stranger to come pick him up from a party, he doesn't expect the guy to actually show, much less be this beautiful.

__ “I’m at—” Pause for a hiccup, “At that party I told you about, and ‘m suuuuper drunk, so,” Another hiccup, Wei Ying leaning more heavily against the wall, “I’m being a very good adult and asking for a ride. Please!”

“. . .Do you know anyone else there?”

Wei Ying barely made out the words, and wow did Wen Ning sound different when Wei Ying was wasted. “Nope!” He answered cheerily, “Just some of ‘em, like a little bit, not real friends but like—Ac-quain-tan-ces. That’s the word, right? Jiang Cheng and your sister say to be extra careful when—” Another hiccup, followed by Wei Ying having to close his eyes and lean his head against the wall to make everything stop spinning, “—When drunk. Ya know? Of course you know.”

Another silence, and Wei Ying let it drag out longer as he swallowed down the sudden rise of nausea, taking deep breaths through his nose.

“What’s the address?”

This was so fun!! The premise is absolutely whack LMAO but I live for it

1000% I agree with Jiang Cheng- if this happened to any of my pals I would be quite concerned HOWEVER because it's wangxian it's fine

what a wild meet cute!! So good!

9 Undoing Regrets by YumichanHamano (34, 834)

Summary: Was Cangse Sanren overjoyed to learn that her baby was already so smart at only two years of age? Absolutely! It was supposed to be a secret between her and her husband that her A-Ying was able to sense danger before his golden core even began to form. However, after seeing her four-year-old child inconsolable after they stepped foot in Yiling, they had no choice but to seek help.

Who better to bother than Lan Qiren? The Lans may be stuffy but they are scholars with a vast wealth of knowledge. If anyone could figure out what is going on with Wei Ying, it was them.

Not that they could know that Lan Qiren, along with his two nephews, came from the same future their son once lived.

When investigating a mysterious array set in the forest, six people were sent back to the past where they would relive their lives and make changes to change their future. They all retained their memory, except one.

This was such a sweet and wholesome fix it!

The boys get to have their parents and actually be kids

You can tell this week was mostly wangxian heavy- I did a HUGE sweep of the tags and I've got a solid bunch to work through now. Which is absolutely solid, because I did almost run out of fics :'3

So many fics show jl hating wwx & the wen from stories, that Wen/wn were mindless beasts & wwx an active intelligent evil, that chose a dark path for selfish ends. But what if the stories told to jin Ling focused on wwx's purported madness (or he interpreted them as) that the great once hero was a tragedy that was helplessly lured to his own destruction by the malicious wen remnants & mindlessly used against his own loved ones? Something to be pitied, & respectfully stopped?

Instead of wwx being attributed with more agency than he had, that he was stripped of it. Because wen ruohan was a near immortal who studied resentful energy for decades, surely he would of taught his trusted advisors, his beloved loyal niece and nephew - a woman known to assist him in his studies and to effect how resentful energy effects the mind? (Wen ruohan was evil yet sane! They would say, because of her knowledge and actions!) And wwx, he was a prodigy, but he only studied resentful energy for a handful of yrs, in a time of great stress & scarcity. He obviously had no means or time to perfect it, or learn every trap! He was saving lives, inverting direct attacks on the battlefield. Not conducting academic studies for its more insidious effects. Did u not see how sick he was at the end of the war? How much he sacrificed and broke himself for us, for our cause? Of course he would be loyal and not sympathize with our enemies!

Obviously, the wen woman slipped our net. She snuck upon him, where he was weak and alone in some back alley where he should have been safe. That is our fault. She twisted his mind and his memories, creating debts that weren't there, for surely others would remember them! (Forgetting the jc was unconscious for days after the fall of Lotus pier, that jy was not permitted to speak). She stole our wwx away from us; turned against his own beloved brother & sister till he could not recognize them! He would never have lifted a hand to harm them! He was the best of us; so honorable and good! We could have no fault in his turning from us, it must be by the wicked wen's design. He is a poor tragic stolen knife, she had to be stopped & alas, he the dangerous weapon, destroyed. His memory honored. (He would never have wanted to harm us after all).

And bby jl grows up hearing these stories, doted on yet neglected by his many very busy uncles. bby jl does not resent his uncles for being busy, they're important sect leaders! He wants for nothing, they give him great presents! Sometimes even smiles and head pats! But he's often lonely and bored, most people emotionally distant due to his station. Jiujiu lives far away in lp and jl can rarely visit, uncle xichen even faaaarther, sect leader nie is kinda scary & nhs is weird & they never visit except for parties jl is too young to stay up for.

He's never met hanguang-jun, he's real sick & doesn't leave cloud recesses. His new aunt hasn't lived at koi tower very long and she and uncle guangyao r really busy with the new baby. Grandma never really let him play with them anyway when she was alive, and grandfather got mad the last time he was around 'making noise'. So when Jin Ling hears stories about his dajiu that his mama adored, who saved a bunch of kids with his dad from a suuuuper evil tortoise, that was nice and funny and smart and loved to play, and was super super loyal to his family, Jin Ling is ENCHANTED. He would love another uncle, esp a dajiu who would dote on him and follow him around constantly talking, that'd protect him from the bullies Jin Ling could totally handle on his own BTW that's why he never told anyone obvi - not cause no one would listen, someone who he could play with and hug him, who might tell him more about his mom & dad & never ever leave him alone in the silence? Well, Jin Ling WANTS. & jl always gets what he wants.

He grows up abstractly loving this dajiu he never met. Who feels more real and substantial & directly related to him than some sick uncle up a cold mountain he never met. (Uncle xichen is nice, but cool in everything he does, quick to leave, as if something about koi tower makes him uncomfortable, tho jl doesn't realize that no one else notices). [Perhaps lxc knows the truth from his brother - too late, & tries to preserve the peace for his secret nephew yuan?].

So when wwx comes miraculously back to life; Jin Ling is ecstatic. There is no complicated history for him here. While everyone else is like, 'oh no! The weapon has returned, however will we destroy it once more?!' Jl is hopeful. Without a master to control it, surely he isn't an active threat this time? There might be a bit of a problem with the guys' memories &/or brainwashing, but he saved those randos at the nighthunt!

So instead of hating and attacking the horrible yllz on sight, jl is like, ah yes magic second chance with uncle. I shall save him! Wwx is confused by this inexplicable turn of events. Bonus points if wwx's mind/memories r a bit messed up, but because of his resurrection, not something the wen did. With a backdrop of the same & new crimes/secrets being revealed by jl's good-natured meddling protectiveness. Jl: if I can adopt random puppies off the street, surely I can adopt my actual uncle?! Meanwhile jc is horrified and emotionally constipated, vacilitating between protective extremes of 'jl get back that could bite u' and 'oh no, despite common belief, maybe I COULD of saved my brother first time around'.

I'm picturing like a 8-10yr old jl, lz is still more in the hobbling stage of his recovery. Jc doesn't know how to deal with the idea his bro may have been married with a kid when he died (the former is also knows to wwx, but at this point no one is treating him as a reliable source of information) & is already upset he couldn't get partial custody of jl that he doesn't get to see enough of & now finds out about a whole other secret nephew he could of been doting on. Lxc smells a cover up but he's not sure who (in his & other's sects) were in on it or legitimately fooled, & theorizes that wwx may have been felled by a slow acting resentful poison from wrh in the final battle than malice from the remnants, who MIGHT have been actually helping him, if only as a ploy for self-preservation anywhere a jl who wants to save wwx from himself instead of destroy him at first sight would be interesting.

Maybe in this au lz is kinda a protective cornered animal due to trust issues, lxc is also protective but weilding politics like a double edged sword. Was lz hurt I'm punishment or deliberately targeted by the conspiracy to allow better access to wwx? Maybe an over the top punishment to sneaking out to try to see wwx ('protect him for his own good') that left him vulnerable to attack
