Ellie's converse!!!

heyyy guys I made ellie's apocalypse converse from tlou pt 2 recently and I wanted to share my process ^ ^

so.. first off I started w/ these old pink converse as my base. longtime fans of my trashfire blog will remember that I dyed these from pink to white a while ago, but I haven't worn them lately so they were the chosen sacrifice! I washed them in hot water for good measure n scrubbed a little bit. (After removing the insoles and laces ofc)

After they were all dry I started on the dye. I covered all the rubber in vaseline to keep the dye from sticking to those parts. Last time dying these shoes I used electrical tape, which did jack shit to keep the dye from spreading, so I definitely recommend using some kind of petroleum jelly -_-

anyway I used 1 and a half bottles of black rit dye, which is probably overkill, but I REALLY wanted this dye to stick. I got some really hot sink water and took turn dunking the shoes, each for around 10 minutes.

here's them right after I took them out of the bath, and once they had dried completely. they look a lot blacker in the pictures, they almost looked brown irl because some of the warmth of the pink still came through. But WHATEVER they need to look muddy anyway so I didn't let it get to me :3

Next I needed to rough them up. I used scissors, a seam-ripper, and some tweezers to create holes and tears and tug at the loose threads.

finally... the moment you all have been waiting for... the mud. I initially used some watered-down paint to put some 'mud' on them, but I also used a mixture of paint, actual dirt, and white glue to create a mixture that I could dab onto the shoes. You want a thick and clumpy consistency, but not so thick that it falls off the shoes.

here's how it looks after it dries:

pretty cool! and plus, because of the glue, the mud doesn't come off when you walk, so they're also house/convention hall approved!

even though it's not default in the game, i wanted to add some fake blood. I watered down some paint and just dabbed/splattered it on over the mud. I think it gave it a nice (?) touch, and the color is sheer enough it doesn't look too spirit halloween-ish.

so here's the finished product!! I really love how they came out and I'm planning on showing my process for the rest of the cosplay. Ik this isn't really a tutorial, but please let me know if you have any questions! ^ ^
