its maddening to me when people discusss school issues and you can tell they dont give a single thought to disabled kids, institutionalised kids, untold scores of dead kids whose graves are etched with fantasies written by their parents. it's always appeal to some median presentable child stripped of interiority, inherently oppositional against learning for no motive, transformed into property which must be totally controlled for their own good. i don't care about your imagined construct of the median child. the system should be built for the most vulnerable children who are stripped of their voices and erased from reality. i think we should sacrifice bureaucratic efficiency if it means less kids get killed and institutionalised. i think standardised testing should be stripped bare (less frequent, results completely anonymised to parents and schools so they have no individual incentives for results). i think homework should be minimised even if it meant worse learning outcomes (which it doesnt in the majority of cases) so that less kids get killed and institutionalised. these are sacrifices which should be uncontroversial to anyone who isn't a eugenicist, and who recognises that the current education system is a disability filter

when i was 11, i got kicked out from my local pool because i threw a plastic chair in the water. i was frustrated and considered a low-risk thing to throw in, basically, since i thought it was just plastic and wouldn't get damaged or leave residue in the water. mom read me the email she got from the center, where they worried that i was going to throw a baby in the pool, or a computer. id gone outside the acceptable window of behavior, and suddenly everything was equivalently threatening and condemnable. i was now a kid who'd proven myself capable of anything. this is a weird thing ive noticed, you just can't compare harms beyond a certain point, you're not allowed, it's all the same. maybe i shouldn't have thrown a chair in the pool, but it was very different from throwing in a baby.

yeah actually we removed the big bad wolf from the little red riding hood story because portraying violence against minors is really messed up. yeah. yeah also the wolf narrative was really predatory and had had some icky grooming vibes and a fable meant for literal children shouldn’t have implied p*do shit and grape so now little red riding hood goes into the woods and nothing happens and she goes to grandma’s house. don’t worry our kids will still stick to the path and know not to follow to wolves implicitly because we told them to and children should always do as their told. just like little red riding hood does now.
